I can't vouch for it, but I've been meaning to track down a copy for ages now. It's supposed to be a blatant Star Wars rip off, which was apparently released in 3D in its initial run.

Titan AE is kind of a crap-shoot (Love it or hate it).
End of Evangelion is just beautiful if not a little insane.
The Gurren Lagann Movies just for epicness sake.
And Dead Leaves is good if you want pure unfiltered insanity.

I quite liked the Patlabor movies particularly the first one, possibly because it is a police procedural that just happens to involve giant robots.

I'm seconding Renaissance - very interesting stark visual style, English voice cast includes Daniel Craig, Jonathan Pryce and Ian Holm.

And if you like trippy and bizarre sci-fi, Fantastic Planet is an experience.

Titan A.E. and WALL-E. That's about it.
Anime, however, does sci fi all the freakin time.

I have just finished watching akira and Ghost in the shell. Both have risen to my list of my favorite movies (prefered ghost in the shell). So i was thinking are there any other Sci-fi or cyber punk animated films i should be aware of or which i should see and are there any western animated films.

I have two suggestions for you to look at.
Renaissance 2054

They both have faults I'll admit, but from an animation standpoint they're stunning.

Bubblegum Crisis and it's spin off series AD Police are both excellent considerations if you're looking for cyberpunk anime. The original BGC (MUCH better than the more recent remake) runs only 8 episodes and ADP is only 3 episodes so while not exactly movies they are also not full on TV series. BGC is a slightly more light approach to the material and ADP is darker, but both are standouts in the genre.

Also check out Macross Plus. It's a 4 part series that, despite the name, doesn't require any previous knowledge of the gigantic Macross mythos but touches upon some typical cyberpunk ideas as well.

Oh, and if you're interested in The Matrix, or the ideas behind it, at all and haven't seen The Animatrix you really should.

yeah the animation is extremely old and put me of from watching the TV series but if you set the audio to the 2000 version instead of the 1979 or English dub it,s pretty easy to watch the movies are called: Mobile Suit Gundam,Soldiers of Sorrow and Encounters in Space.
the Zeta Gundam movies are called A New Translation the movies themselfs are named: Heirs To The Stars,Lovers and Love is the Pulse of the Stars.

You could try watching Patlabor and Patlabor 2.

They're made by the same guy who directed Ghost in the Shell.

They're slow burns though, and I mean dreadfully slow.
