Anime and Why I Don't Watch More Of It

Now, I'd really like to watch more anime, if only so I can understand who the hell all of your avatars are without having to PM awkward questions. However. I have two main excuses for not watching most 'recommended' anime shows out there. Firstly, my attention span is that of a CoD-a-holic: the only shows that can really hold my interest are the action-based ones.

And the second reason?

Most anime shows that do mostly action, use magical girls for it. And where there's one, they're bound to cover the whole show, pulling off all the special effects and world-saving while everyone else (i.e. anyone who has hit puberty or has a Y chromosome) cheers invisibly from the sidelines.

Let me just go on record here by saying that I have never been turned on by anime characters. That alone means that I'm simply not interested in stuff like the Japanese Sailor Moon. Of course, I'm not interested in the English version either, because I really prefer to see a mix of characters getting to do stuff. I also don't go for random men beating the crap out of one another for hours on end while screaming at the tops of their voices, so sayonara Hokuto no Ken and Dragon Ball Whatever.

But as bad as I think Kenshiro and Goku are, I'd take them over Sakura or Nanoha any day.

Now, some of you may by thinking at this point, 'Leet, you abuser of the First Amendment! What about shows that don't have any forms of magic at all, like Infinite Stratos?' Well, using that as an example, it still has a special attribute that only applies to one gender. The facts that it sticks around after puberty and that there are exceptions to the rule don't change my opinion: from what I've seen, Ichika is utterly terrible as a pilot, and Charles doesn't count because
he's actually a girl, who claimed to be a boy so her father's company would gain more press and so she could spy on Ichika. All this was at his request, though.

Some of you who know me better might be about to ask me about Touhou. I like Touhou, and I like its characters, but that's because I got into it as a game, and then I started to focus more on the characters. Heck, I've had no less than three of them as my avatar at different points in time. With anime, though, I have a bias against them, and there's no other ways available to break said bias, like there was with Touhou.

At this point, the only shows I know of that have action without gender favouritism are Bleach, Naruto (both of them have too much filler) and One Piece. (Sonic X as well, but that just sucked.) So that's why I don't watch anime: I don't like too many girls or too many boys, but I'd rather go down the end I'm on.

And if you want to give me examples that shoot down my opinion on magical girls entirely, go right ahead. Just don't be surprised when I tell you why I'm biased against each of your suggestions.
~~~~~~
Edit: At the request of somebody else, if you have your own reasons for not liking certain types of anime, go ahead and post those too.
I would say Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan, but that has quite a lot of fanservice... Still if you like action, it doesn't get in the way of the massive explosions or the incredibly epic science.
I prefer the more mind screwy/comedy/romance/any combo of the three anime anyway
OMG, you have a taste in anime that's different from mine, I must kill you now. /sarcasm
But seriously, you're much like me insomuch that it's difficult for me to find a series I find genuinely good and engaging (though different genre). I like headfuck series, and dramas that forcibly make me dwell. Finding the first is difficult once you leave out Ergo Proxy, Chaos Head, Steins Gate, Serial Experiments Lain & Paranoia Agent, but with the latter, I defend my decision to like Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, Hourou Musuko, Fuujin Monogatari, Haibane Renmei & planetES 'cos IMHO, tropes never a good anime make.
OT: You might want to look at Senkou no Night Raid, Phantom - Requiem for the Phantom (less so), Black Cat (if you come across people who pan this, I wouldn't be surprised), Canaan (very underrated) & Pumpkin Scissors (the manga's better, though). With the exception of Black Cat, these series are very untropey (Phantom's based on a game and most people who've played the game dislike the anime, but I'm in little position to comment).
To a lesser extent, I'm sort of loathe to recommend Full Metal Panic given what you've posted.
Okay....fair enough, an opinion is an opinion. I myself don't necessarily like actiony anime (though my avatar kinda tips that off) but I do like action anime if they get my interest. I doubt any anime I like is what you'd like, so I'm gonna go ahead and ask.
Why, exactly, did you see fit to create an entire thread talking about why you don't watch anime anymore? I mean, if you went and asked this board if you were former anime fans and why you stopped, that would have been better, but why make a thread about, specifically, one centered around you.
Now again, I mean no offense when I say this, but the thread seems.....all together pointless. I mean, fine, you don't like most anime. That's alright, tell that to your friends in real life or in the Escapist, but creating a thread for it....somewhat unnecessary yeah?
only problem i found with that was it went a bit over the top and got a bit stupid. battle robots bigger than a galaxy? no.
Rather idiotically, that's one of the reasons why a lot of people (sic) consider it awesome. (Just to clarify, I consider it hideously overrated.) When I watched it, they could've done so much more with the concept of 'spiral' wrt DNA and prevalence in nature. But no, they went down the idiot route.
Code Geass' drama was over the top (I was actually duped into feeling the drama, but had some sort of enlightenment). But overall a good anime.
I wouldn't go as far as saying that I don't like Anime. I just do not inhabit the same sphere as anime fans. I've looked at some clips from Hellsing and thought "This is quite interesting" and watched a bit of DragonBall Z which was made considerably more easy since missing an episode only means you missed 15 minutes of steroid abusers wheezing and panting at each other with determined looks before skipping animations for a few seconds and then somebody is dead.
Where was I going again?
Okay animes, I just don't feel interested in them enough to actually read them. And I find the art style inconsistencies (and a lack of a freaking nose) to be more annoying than it should be. And the over the top reactions that maybe should be funny are cringe-worthy for me. I don't think I am snobbish about shows that have stupid humor, I like Spongebob after all. But somehow animes aren't what I consider entertainment....
Somehow this became really convoluted really fast... Oh well.
I actually, almost fully agree with you. Which is why I watch very little anime. There are a few shows that are gold.
Now, what do I disagree with? Fist of the North Star is far, far better than Dragon Ball... Sure it starts off cheesy as hell, but the series really develops once the brothers are introduced. It's melodramatic, yes, melodramatic as hell, but it's still very good.
Mini-rant over.
it was weird, it started good, then went a bit weird. then they started a sort of 'Part 2' several years later which also started good but went rapidly downhill. as you said, had it of been more toned down it could have been so awesome.
That's a common misconception for people new to Touhou Project; like the OP said, it's not anime. It's a game series. That avi of his one of the character portraits from a game.
Keep in mind that games and anime (from all nations) don't have that much overlap.
I can't deny, it's good to have a massive internal censor/sieve/filter/quality control system, call it what you will. You don't want to watch anything that sounds like crap, fair enough. So read reviews by people's whose opinions you trust. Talk to friends with a similar taste to yours and whose opinions you respect. I can honestly say that there is no higher recommendation for any series than simple 'word of mouth'.
There are, as you are probably aware, hundreds, if not thousands of series out there. Of course, there are probably loads of magic girl series, but I wouldn't know, I don't like those kinds of anime. There are however plenty of good action series without action girls. Most of those involve mecha, and now we have the problem of another 'love it or hate it' genre.
I could just tell you to watch:-
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Vision of Escaflowne
Full Metal Panic
and if you like it cheesy - Code Geauss
However, there is the odd action series out there that has neither giant robots nor girls in outrageous costumes doing unfeasible things. Granted, these are a touch thin on the ground, but they exist. If you like stuff highly stylised, then:-
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Black Lagoon
all fit the bill nicely. Though its not strictly action, I would also recommend FLCL since it does have action and goes along at a hundred miles an hour.
Finally, if you do want anything a touch slower, try Crest of the Stars. There is action, but other stuff as well, like talking and character development.
Fair enough: C2 is kind of a magical girl. However, it's generally the other characters that get the action scenes in Code Geass. The "magical girl" is the one on the sidelines, usually as an advisor. It's LeLouch, Kallen and Suzaku who get the fight scenes.
Oh, you do know that the shows you listed as having gripes against are at least 15 years old each, right? Societal laws involving gender equality were a lot different back then.
'Tis true that Shōnen manga have taken over the anime buissness, with fan service being almost everywhere (Talking about episodes with main characters in swim suits just for the fans), You can't judge all of the medium just by one genre.
The reason why Shōnen manga is seen everywhere and makes a large part of anime is that it sells. Young girls in skimpy outfits fighting evil while having sexual tensions with each other sells. Giant robots and overly aggresive dudes sell. Blood, gore, aliens and the occaisional 'accidental' topless scene sells.
You need to overlook that and seek interesting and engaging pieces of art in the form of a anime series, there are many.
Oh for the love of god this.
I mean that last line of the OP:
You may as well have said:
"Tell me something and I'll tell you why you're wrong"
'Anime' has a rather broad meaning. It could be the exact definition of "Japanese animation" or media could be simply called anime because of art design resembling the Japanese form. And yes my term 'anime' meant the latter one.
EDIT: And Spirited Away wins the award as the most catchy anime I've ever watched. Others are like meh right now especially the last half-decade. *cough* boobs
I'm not a big anime watcher myself, but I've never understood the people who just say "I don't like anime" because it's not like anime is a specific genre. That'd be like saying I don't like movies or I don't like music. So long as you don't have some sort of hatred of animation as an art form, chances are you can find at least one anime you like.
I've only found a small handful of anime that I like enough to watch and follow, but here's the annoying part. Because a lot of the anime that people really like are ones that I didn't like after watching them, people twist that to assume it means I hate anime.
Do you like any of the following series? Bleach, Naruto, Inuyasha, Full Metal Alchemist, Death Note, or FLCL. NOT ME! :D I have watched all of those series to form an opinion of them, and I'm just not a fan. Nothing against people that like them, but I've found most people who do like those shows treat me as some sort of anime hating jerkward simply for not liking that particular series.
Bleach is the biggest one. Let me bore you with my story with Bleach. I watched the first...20 episodes or so, I can't recall where I stopped. The point is, I didn't like it. Nothing I was seeing made me want to watch more of it. But people keep telling me "No No, you gotta keep watching. It gets really good around episode 50-ish"
...and no offense Bleach fans, but I don't really see that as a point in it's favor. And this is coming from a guy who loves Katekyo Hitman Reborn, a series that spends the first 18 episodes doing nothing but filler humor and introducing new characters.
But the thing with KHR was that I watched the first episode, enjoyed it, and wanted to watch the second one. The cycle continued from there.
So yeah, I don't watch a lot of anime either, but that doesn't mean I hate anime at its entirety.
