I'm too tired to read over all the suggestions so far, but I do have one that transcended everything I thought I liked about anime.

Berserk.

Watched the show, read the manga, and never was I bored. Unapologetic action, violence, and character development galore. Very graphic though--for some that is a deal breaker. But I do highly recommend Berserk. I loved every gory minute of it.
EDIT: I see I may have missed the point here. This recommendation is fraught with stereotypes and gender favoritism. Although, to be fair, it also throws out many of the same stereotypes soon after it makes them. I'd say it's a very fair minded, if not bloody romp through a dark and dreary fantasy tale.

Personally I'm starting to hate anime for the same reason I hate American comics: THEY NEVER FUCKING END.

Seriously, how many episodes of One Piece are there now?

Then there is also the fan service. Even in the shows made for kids, there is always a panty-shot at least.

....I think the last reason is the explosion of slice of life anime. I've never been fond of 'high school' stories regardless of the medium and slice of life/fantasy seems to be the most popular genre now (from what I've seen anyway). I've watched quite a few of the 'good' ones to try to see if they would change my mind, but none of them have wowed me.

Less than a quarter of the number of episodes of The Daily Show. Some anime are endless, like any other form of television show, but the majority of new shows these days are around 13 episodes.

I just find it a little strange that the OP is so stuck on magical girl shows, as they really aren't terribly common. Now, if you were complaining about he slice-of-life stuff that seems to be everywhere these days...

I could start throwing out recommendations, but then I'd say weird stuff like Kemonozume, Mind Game, and Kaiba, and you'd probably be saying "What the hell is this?" the whole time you watched it.

@leet: you still have an anime character as an avatar though so the love must still be there. >XD
That's a video game character.

Edit: It appears that somebody already said this, so I might as well devote the rest of this post to answering some of your comments.

You may as well have said:

Fair cop. I mean, since I don't watch it, I can't know for sure, right? I mean, I made my own recommendation thread on this exact same topic, and you wouldn't believe how many people still told me Puella Magi Madoka Magica and...that other one. I guess I'm just too judgmental.

And srly, what have you been watching dude?
Another fair cop. I seem to be more deserving of those than any other human being on the planet, for whatever reason. So, for sake of argument, here's every anime I've actually seen for myself, and how much of it:

-One Piece: One episode. Nothing much happens in it, but I've got a recommendation for it off someone I actually know. (Subbed)
-Excel Saga: The entire series. This was before I really started forming opinions on genres. I'm actually pretty glad for that. (Subbed)
-Sonic X: The first series, and a few episodes of the second. Not that bad, but could be a lot better than it is. (A mix of the two)
-Vampire Knight: One episode, and I've also read some of the manga. And I got a recommendation for it from a family member. (Dubbed)
-Evangelion: First eight episodes. Seems pretty interesting, but I've also heard it's a complete head-screw at the end... (Subbed)
-Infinite Stratos: Three episodes, out of order. That's probably why I've made so many comments about it. And despite what the guy above said, you are telling me why I'm wrong in this case. (Subbed)

Also:
-Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei: This one, I kind of picked up tangentially. I was at my school's anime club for a different reason, and this was what was on. Somehow, I actually managed to find it pretty interesting. (Subbed)

So maybe I was exaggerating about the genre thing... Still, I just don't do other genres as much. That's just my opinion.

Anyway, on the topic of Infinite Stratos; Laura Bodewig.
I'll be in my bunk.
Learn to read. I am not interested in fanservice, and anyway, I think she's a Jerk-ass!Sue. And I can never remember her name anyway, which just proves my dislike further.
Here are a few.
Tell me what ya think or anyone for that matter.

Unless you want a horrible letdown ending, I would skip code geass. I won't go into it or it would spoil the show.

I tend to feel the same as the OP, most anime frustrates me no end. The only anime I know of that doesn't have a gender bias one way of the other is One Piece. Its either all the males can do everything and the females are useless, or all the females turn into magical girls and all the males are useless.
