I don't watch much anime at all. I'd say maybe I indulge a few flicks or a TV run every 5 years or so (at least, since they've been available). Despite being a big fan of comics, perticularly DC Vertigo, Image and Avatar Press prints, I've only ever read 2 manga series.

My favorite Anime, ever, to date has been Akira - it got it's beautiful claws in early (I miss the tragic original dubbing). Ghost in the Shell movies and, later, SAC, Ninja Scroll, P. Mononoke... the... Animatrix? That's about it.

So, on the recommendations of a friend, I've decided on going on a marathon of old and new! I have collected and will be watching, in sequence:

- Genocyber
- Amon: Apocalypse of Devilmen
- Gantz
- Elfen Lied

(none of which I've seen so NO BLOODY SPOILERS)

After I am finished my friend's suggested playlist, in order, I'll come back and report my experience, for your benefit; there are a lot of anime fans on here who may enjoy seeing an old fart like me soaking up some of their favorite media - and any ensuing reactions.

Wish me luck.

I'm interpretaing this as a reccodmendation thread. Watch FLCL it's 6 episodes, looks amazing, great music (I never say this), and is super cool. I finished watching it last night and couldn't fall asleep I liked it so much.
Anyways, good luck on your binge and I can confirm that Elfen Lied is really good.

For old, watch Record of the Lodoss War. If Tolkien could have an anime, this would be his. The animation... sucks, a lot, but it's a classic, and the music is good.

Other recommendations:

Gunslinger Girl
Outlaw Star
Cowboy Bebop

Berserk.
Ghost in the Shell
Elfenlied.

Only ones I can recommend, most anime is horrible and unwatchable brainmelting asian doggerel.

Wolfs Rain
Ergo Proxy

Those are two especially good ones off the top of my head. Both have exceptional animation/art, pretty deep plots and great characters.

As someone mentioned Berserk: Watch the anime and then read the Manga. I'm in no way into manga (that's the only one I've read) but it's well worth reading afterwards, contines the story for a long way.

Death Note and Code Geass are must see/must read serials. However, once you watch one, it automatically becomes better than the other (pending on which one you see first). For me, Death Note.

Good classics would be stuff like RuroKen.

Newer stuff that's not bad would be Angel Beats, Soul Eater, Toradora, and maybe a couple episodes of High School of the Dead.

Be prepared to see some weird, disturbing shit.

And if you're in the mood for a rather brilliant manga, read Berserk. It's one of the most amazing things that has ever been put on woodpulp.

I'm not sure if you'd really like the jump from stuff like Akira to something like Elfen Lied. It's...interesting. Gantz is much better if you read the manga, but most anime actually is.

I also recommend Hellsin Ultimate, Berserk, Golden Boy, Black Lagoon, and Desert Punk. Code Geass too is you like mechs and military psychological. Oh and Higurashi no naku koro ni, and it's sequels.

Hope you had fun with that~

My recommendation, as always, is definitely Spice and Wolf. A nice laid back series to watch that can be enjoyed split evenly or watched all at once.

These were great anime.

On this note, I would suggest maybe Ping Pong club for a but o fun and relief.
