I the order of whenever I thought of them.

Admit it, this is how we all fantasize about becoming in a zombie outbreak.

Stupid name, awesome character. Who couldn't love a shinigami with severe OCD?

No explanations are needed.
http://www.anime-source.com/banzai/images/dvd_reviews/blacklagoon1/bldvd121.jpg
Former olympic level sniper, now running the Russian mob... What's not to like?

So I don't get written out of existence.

Again, I feel I don't need to explain.

For, more or less, the same reasons as Balalaika.

Not going to lie, I'm running out of favorites, and I felt I needed at least one more male character.

Ichigo? The guy who sends all of his time making increasingly pathetic faces without saying shit and pulling powerups out his ass that make DBZ blush?

Soi Fong? The chick who gets everything her character is based on completely botched in one fight because Kubo wanted a missile launcher?

Konan? Another Naruto girl that gets a grand total of 20 lines tops then gets owned by the trolling main villain who doesn't even get to be killed after a full fight?

I am very disappoint.
Don't forget Konan's 'power'. I would love to see her get wet in the rain, should be quite the spectacle. Kinda like Roy Mustang, but worst and without the humor.

There's a lot of anime characters I really like and my favourites are always changing, anyway here's my current top ten in no particular order.

10. Victorique de Blois from Gosick.

Ah yes Gosick I just got through watching this a few days ago and already it made it to my top 10 favourites and it's main character, the absolutely adorable, mature and intelligent Victorique is no different I love her and the anime she stars in.

9. Accelerator from To aru Majustsu no Index.

My favourite anime/manga ever and is responsible for creating one of the most powerful villains ever. What makes me so fond of this character is delevopment, he was used as a tool by the higher ups and constanly attacked just to test is abilties, in other words he existed only to kill. He later proves that his power can be used to save people and begins to soften up a little. As for his power just click the spoiler box below. (Waring you will be hit by a wall of text.)

Accelerator's ability creates a thin field of AIM around him, which allows him to modify the vector values of anything he touches. 1.Earth Stomp: Using the vectors behind his feet, he causes a little explosion made of earth and rocks to attack his opponents. In the beginning of the series this was his most common way to attack. He can Accelerator's vector manipulation has a variety of uses, including crushing the earth around him

also use this to propel himself forward, as seen in the Sisters Arc.

2.Vector Shooting: By touching an object, he can use his ability to change the magnitude of vectors he comes in contact with, such as seen during his fight with Kamijou Touma in the Sisters Arc. This allows him to change the vectors of objects in such a way that he can turn them to projectiles. An example of the use of this ability is in his fight with Touma, when he lightly kicked a rock to make it shoot like a bullet, or when he stomped on train rails to push them out of their sockets, and lightly knocked on them to make those rails rain upon Touma. This ability also allows him to mimick superhuman strength, as he once used it to pick up and throw a building.

3.Wind Control: He can re-vector the surrounding winds and force them to congregate at a single point creating an extremely high velocity wind, but it had flaws like when the wind is moving in an abnormal direction or when his vector calculations are disturbed by sound as showed as with Kihara in the Volume 13.
4.Plasma Storm: He can even create plasma by further compressing the wind at high speeds in a single point.

5.Kinetic Blast: Shown in Volume 13, he takes control of the planet's rotational vectors and transfers an enormous amount of that energy into one attack. This attack used up so much of the planets rotational energy that it slowed down the the earth's rotation by about 5 minutes.

6.Brain Hacking: In accord to him by redirecting the electrical signals of the human body he can take 'control' over them and rewrite the memories and personality of the people as showed with Last Order in the Vol.5.

7.Flight: By controlling the wind around him he creates about 4 high-powered tornadoes behind him to allow him to fly. Showed in Vol.8 and 15. He is also able to redirect the vectors of gravity upon him.

8.Reverse Engineering: Shown in Volume 22, chapter 11; The Accelerator has stated that as long as he has experienced it, he can analyze forces unknown to him as long as his body has been in contact with it, by following the vectors that have been applied. He used this ability to understand Aiwass' "inexplicable laws".

9.Bullet Redirection: Shown in Volume 15 in his fight against Saraku. When his gun sight is thrown off in this fight, Accelerator simply pointed the gun at himself then fired, redirecting the bullet to hit his enemy, stating that his ability was far more precise than any gun sight. Best anime power ever.

8. Kanji Sashara from Genshiken.

I like this character is because of how much I can relate to him, he's an anime loving geeks but keeps his thoughts to himself unless talking with other anime geeks, he's very shy and reserved but knows how to talk to people when he gets over this factor and he's and overly nice guy.

7. Harunobu Madarame from Genshiken.

Another character from Genshiken, I guess I enjoy his character because of how open minded he is, plus he has one of the greatest rants ever, his rant on why Hentai is not weird.

6. Okita Sogou from Gintama

The king of Sadists and one of the funniest characters on the show, there isn't really much else to say about him so here's a few clips of his best moments.
]

5. Hibari Kyoya from Hitman Reborn.

The crowd hating, complete asshole who just doesn't give a fuck and will kick the shit out of anyone he decides he doesn't like especially of they bring harm to his beloved high school. Of course this isn't a reason on why I like him, no I like him because he doesn't take any shit and at times can also show some honour and kindness and always pays back any debt he owes.

4. Revy from Black Lagoon.

I'll keep this short, she is a complete fucking badass that is all.

3. Amaimon from Ao no Exorcist.

I've always loved a villian that can make you laugh, but at the same time can and will beat the shit out of any hero that fights him, although now always winning. It's the second son of Satan and the King of earth Amaimon from Ao no Exorcist.

2. Erza Scarlet from Fairy Tail.

The powerful, kind and extremly beautiful S Class mage of Fairy Tail and my favourite character in the show itself. She also has some really nice theme music.

1. L From Death Note.

I was going to leave this guy out, but after much thought and considering how much I loved his character in the show itself I just couldn't. He's smart, loyal to justice and despite his gloomy appearance has a few really funny moments, it's L from Death Note.

I may be in the extreme minority, but Shinji Ikari (from Evangelion) is one of my favorite characters. And I think that he is braver and more bad-ass than the 'cool and fearless anime characters (i.e. the Hiro Yui's, Ichigo's, Vegeta's etc.). It's far easier to face world-ending abominations and near certain death if you're fearless or if you love to fight for the sake of fighting than it is if you're terrified or dislike fighting period. Shinji felt fear, and he hated piloting (and the whole agonizing pain issue) yet he repeatedly went out to battle the Angel's.
This quote from the movie 'Angus' (which I saw part of on t.v. years ago) sums up my opinion easily

Grandpa: Superman isn't brave.
Angus: Did you take your pills this morning?
Grandpa: [chuckles] You don't understand. He's smart, handsome, even decent. But he's not brave. No, listen to me. Superman is indestructible, and you can't be brave if you're indestructible. It's people like you and your mother. People who are different, and can be crushed and know it. Yet they keep on going out there every time.

I'd struggle to name 10 so I'll go with 5.

1. Gatts and Griffith (Berserk)
Bear with me I couldn't possibly get away with sticking them in 1st and 2nd as their characters intertwine so strongly with each-other you couldn't clearly define one without the others influence. Some deep shit can be drawn from the interactions of these 2.

2. Detective Lunge (Monster)
I love everything about this guy, he's cold, calculating and logical but his detective prowess comes at a tragic cost as it stunts the relationship he feels with his wife and daughter. In the last episodes he becomes a total badass, kicking ass and taking names. One of the best things is definitely how he finds solitude in his family by the end.

3. Kamina (Gurren Lagann)
DRILL.PIERCE.HEAVENS. nuff said

4. Ippo (Hajime no ippo)
Possibly the most universally likable character in any anime/manga I have seen, he's a hard working and talented boxer who; despite his devastatingly powerful punches in the ring, struggles socially (especially round girls). The character development that takes place he improves as a boxer and grows into a man is interesting and mind grabbing.

5. Kanna Endo (20th century boys, technically only a manga but oh well)
The only female character on my top 5 (inspiring female characters seem to be something lacking in anime) but what a character! She stares down crime bosses with no fear and turns them into her allies! Her raw determination to bring the truth to the world is what makes her a great character as well as the mysteries of her birth and past.

Actually, water doesn't really affect her; oil on the other hand gives her some issues.

I am incredibly saddened that Sakura Kinomoto is not on your list. ;~;

YOU WILL PLAY FOR YOUR SINS

But it's ok. :p
Same (CCS ftw)!

For me, I think Mustang from FMA and L would also be somewhere in my top 10.

I made a joke before reading your thread, that the top five would all be male and the bottom would all be random females simply because you had too and because there are no good female characters. (Did I mean it? Of course not, it was nonesense. I love anime and its characters.)

Found it hilarious that I looked back up and saw that it actually was in that order, and all of the females were generally only in there because they were hot.

EDIT: IGNORE!!! you already said they weren't in any particular order :) my bad

Man, where is Char? Where is Age? Where is Heroman (for being Heroman, and having his final attack spell out his name!)? Where is the whole Ouran High School Host Club? Macross? Half the cast of Trigun? Cowboy Bebop? Himura Kenshin? Nothing from VOTOMs? I can go on and on with things that people either never watched or are to young to have watched...

Lelouch is a rip from Dune/L as is the piss poor show that was Code Geass R2. There I said it, I await to be murdered.

I don't really watch enough anime to make up a list properly, so I'm gonna go with my limited experience, and then supplement it with Persona characters (so there...)

10) Elizabeth - Persona 3
In charge of requests and stuff in the Velvet Room with Igor, and helps with fusions and stuff. She also accompanies you into the real world, and her total disconnection from reality shows in hilarious ways at times, so you can't help but like her character.

9) Light Yagami - DeathNote
Not gonna give any spoilers to anyone, though I think everyone knows who Light is. Thing is, despite who he is, he's brilliant, cunning, devious and fascinating to watch, especially the continuing confrontation with L (see later).

8) Viral - Gurren Lagann
Ok so he's a beastman general, but he's awesome! He fights with principles, and shows grudging respect for Kamina, and is a genuinely interesting character, more likeable than all the other beastmen, and in fact, most of the humans.

7) Yosuke Hanamura - Persona 4
Ok, he's just a cool guy, and basically the MC's best friend, and a good member of the team. Is hilarious in occasional conflict with Chie (amicably), and the passage with the beauty contests is classic...

6) Misa Amane - DeathNote
Ok she can get a bit annoying, but she's quite funny, and allows some very clever lines to be muttered by L, and sets up interesting emotional setups with Light and Ryuk.

5) Ryuk - DeathNote
The shinigami who follows Light, and has some funny lines, as well as being an intimidating presence early on. He seems to develop into a cool friend of Light, but I respected him more for his anarchic outlook on the Death Note, and how he had just ditched it for amusement purposes.

4) Kamina - Gurren Lagann
Genuinely cool and funny character. He put me in mind of the cool kid in any generic American high school series of film, except that he reaches out to the little Simon, who most people ignore, and inspires humanity to stand up for itself. He's aggressive, determined, and has a cool rivalry with Viral until his untimely death, as ruined by previous comments. He actually made those daft glasses look kinda cool.

3) Akihiko Sanada - Persona 3
Local boxing champion and one of the more experienced members of S.E.E.S., Akihiko is tough, determined, intelligent, and has a rather tragic experience, carrying guilt as a motivation. His friendship with Shinjiro Aragaki, who would have made the list had it not been for what happened to him (no spoilers, but fuck Ken), was a cool aside in the game, and his catchphrase 'I've been waiting for this' in the English dub was so cool I sampled the audio and set it to my text tone... I'm so cool!

2) L - DeathNote
He's possibly the coolest, smartest character ever made, and a role model for me (in a way). His duel with Light was one of the best conflicts in anything ever, right up there with Heath Ledger's Joker versus Christian Bale's Batman. A master of the one-liners, and the subtle way he went about doing things, the English dub was brilliantly done, and his departure genuinely made me cry, which is pretty rare.

1) Junpei Iori - Persona 3
Ok, so he starts off a bit of a twat, but he realises eventually and apologises for his being a 'dick' to the MC. Thing is, his mastery of the 2 handed sword makes him an invaluable member of the team, and the development of his character through the relationship with Chidori, culminating in a heartbreaking scene and a moment of pure awesome, shows that he isn't just a one dimensional character, spouting cool colloquialisms throughout to the main character, but he isn't as shallow as he seems, and the fact that he so radically changes as a personality throughout the game makes him better than L, just...

Honorable mentions to Howl (I decided to ignore films) and Matsuda from DeathNote.
