I want my girlfriend to start watching anime. She has some weird back off about it, thinking the whole genre isn't credible...and weird.

I've recently gotten really into it all, watching some classics, recommended by my friend's sister, like neon genesis, akira, howl's moving caslte, cowboy bebop, princess mononoke, paprika, etc. I'm in love with this as a genre, because of how much freedom is apparently possessed by the animators and directors of these amazing movies.

Anyway, enough with this ranting, because I'm off topic now. I just need to get some legitimate suggestions for anime that might get her hooked.

Her taste in movies includes extremely cheesy, corny, girly stuff like the Notebook and Love, Actually. She also likes Airplane and Fight Club.

Anything she should watch that has the weirdness I like, without being too out there? I'm really excited to try and get her into all this.

Thanks for your help!!!

Chances are she wont like it if she doesn't think it's credible.

Just saying.

It's really hard to seriously recommend anything without knowing your girlfriend.

However, going with the 'extremely cheesy, corny stuff'...

Well, recently I bought Pani Poni Dash [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SpdcmuTSn0] and I couldn't help but think it might be something a girlfriend your age might enjoy.

The same might be said for Lucky Star [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKtNTbFTtgM] or Ouran Host Club [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_9T9nDgpY8].

Lets see...

Perhaps she'd like some school girl animes?

Azumanga Daioh
Lucky Star
Haruhi (That counts, right?)

perhaps a magical girl anime?

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha

Perhaps... something else?

Rozen Maiden

Those are the animes I've watched that felt 'girl-ish' to an extent, at least.

Uh, Spirited Away is usually the gateway drug I use to introduce people to anime. I've yet to find someone who watched it and didn't like it.

cred·i·ble (krd-bl)
adj.
1. Capable of being believed; plausible. See Synonyms at plausible.
2. Worthy of confidence; reliable.

I don't understand. How is something like anime not credible? Actually, how are most media credible? Aren't movies/games/anime mostly fiction anyway? Ahh! Head... exploding!

Anyway. Try looking up stuff like... Chobits. Ah! My Goddess (I thought this was one of the cheesiest thing I've ever seen). Kanon (people in this have crazy eyes, even by anime standards). Clannad (I can barely tell this and Kanon apart).

This one isn't cheesy or girly, but she might still enjoy it. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.

Clannad/Clannad After Story has a plot that your girlfriend would probably like.

(Yes I watched it and liked it, and still consider myself manly. *beats chest*)
I'm with this guy, also Haruhi Suzumiya because I believe anyone can find something to laugh at in that anime.

Well, start with ghibli at any rate. I got my girlfriend into full metal alchemist in a big way, as well as death note, so try both of those too!

Thanks for the suggestions, and @THEDEFINITIONOFCREDIBLE, come on man... I guess I used the wrong word there, so, my mistake. I'm not going to search desperately for a word for: she doesn't think that anime is worthy of her watching.

It was my training wheels for anime. But try to get her to watch a show first, cause she won't have to commit to it the rest of the night/day/whenever your watching it.

Clannad. Or Kanon. One or the other. Both are romantic comedies that are guaranteed to make both her and you cry multiple times. Seriously. Everyone freaking cries. Both are amazing: really funny, genuinely emotional, and very well-made. WATCH BOTH.

Oh, but only Kanon has been dubbed, if that's what you're into. I would still recommend the Japanese with English subs though, if you can stand subtitles.

This. Real men cry. And I cried, I'll admit it. Especially near the end of After Story. Holy crap, did I cry.

You could show her FullMetal Alchemyst. I'm not as big a fan of anime as I was, but this is the one anime I could watch from beginning 'till end and would be satisfied with that it didn't decrease in quality anywhere.

Likewise on all fronts.
OT: I guess you can't go wrong with Hayao Miyazaki movies.

Also some random movie called fireflies or something, its about WW2 in Japan from a kids point of view.
Anyway I watched it like 5 years ago with my whole family, all my sisters and cousins cried so its perfect for a sappy movie.

I really wish I could help, no seriously, cause I have been in your situation, but I was dealing with comic books. The thing is, I care nothing for anime. I really wish I could help you mate. Best of luck.

well if she like daft punk at all i recommend Interstella 5555, theres no voice acting the entire movie is, dare i say narrated, by daft punks music. and if she doesnt like it then you should check it out anyway its great!
