What genre?

Action: Cowboy Bebop, Trigun.
These are pretty much all you need. I'd suggest some Nabeshin anime but those are a bit much for a first-timer.
yeah... excel saga and puni puni peomi are a bit much for a first-timer.
Yeah. Nerima Daikon Brothers is nearly as bad.

...oh! I know a perfect Nabeshin anime for a beginner. The Wallflower. It is a delicious mixture of comedy, romance, horror, and reverse-harem (four boys, one girl).
hrmm, interesting haven't heard of the wallflower before... i'll have to look into that.

It brings me great joy to see someone else who has heard of that wonderful series =D

Though I wouldn't really classify it as a mecha series... its more romance with a side of mechs mixed in.

Do not listen to this person unless you want to see something that's so incoherent that it transcends random.

Samurai Champloo. Only anime so far that was able to hold my interest all the way through. It's fast paced, the fight scenes are cool, it's about 20 episodes long, and it's not extremely up its own ass in unnecessarily complicated mythology.

It depends on your other interests. I can see that you're into Bob Marley, but I haven't yet come by a truly peace-loving anime.

Actually, if anyone does come by one, please let me know.

Anyway, that aside, if you like action (and by your Steam list you don't mind it), for a strategic bent with interesting characters, watch Code Geass. It will introduce you to some of anime's common tropes and themes, but in a way that doesn't talk down to you.

No anime is good except pre 2000. Dragonball Z (obviously) Yuyu Hakusho, Ruroni Kenshin, and perhaps things like Cowboy Bebop and Trigun. Inyuyasha gets an honorable mention.

Gundam 08th MS team.

somewhat realistic and without alot of the vomit-inducing anime stereotypes that take time to get used to.

And Hellsing. Hellsing is the shit. Its about a vampire hunting vampires, it reminds me vaguely of a certain castlevania game...

I am interested in watching an anime, series or otherwise. What animes do you know of that are good for a first timer? If you can, make sure it's on Netflix because I'm not really willing to buy any DVDs.

Thanks =)
Ooh... let's see.

Like the 2nd poster said, Cowboy Bebop is an excellent place to start. Think sci-fi meets western with a jazz beat. Samurai Champloo is very similar to Bebop, and is also a great place to start.

If you want something over-the-top, go with Gurren Lagann. Giant robots, lots of action, and just enough scantily-clad women to make you feel uncomfortable watching it with friends.

For a good comedy, FLCL, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, or Rurouni Kenshin. I personally recommend Kenshin, since it has humor while still having a lot of action.

Other random ones I highly recommend are Mobile Suit Gundam (the first or Zeta Gundam to start with), Bleach, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ronin Warriors, Excel Saga, Outlaw Star, Trigun, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, Fist of the North Star and a whole lot more than I can even remember.

Just find a series that looks interesting. Watch a few episodes, and if you like what you see, go from there. It won't take long to find something you like.

Cowboy Bebop, Gundam Wing, Hellsing and Trigun. They're pretty good action series, especially if you're only just looking to get into anime.

Completely unoriginal, but it brings me great joy to see two other people that have heard of the wonderful series that is Eureka 7. Out of interest, have either of you seen the Pocket Full of Rainbows movie? It's pretty good. Not quite as good as the series, but pretty decent nonetheless.

Cowboy Beebop is an incredibly good place to start. It's also one of the few anime that have a proper English dubbing. You can't not like this- its a bloody classic. This is the one anime I can get people who simply hate anime to watch.

Foolie Coolie (FLCL) is another fun one. It's easy to pick up, its hardly long at all, and it's a primer for the random factor that creeps into anime. It's also got an incredibly deep plot line for those willing to dig far enough.

Trigun is a good one too. Cut from the same vein as Cowboy Beebop with more morals instilled in it.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is good, and it'll be a good primer for the shows that get heavily philosophical. Don't watch the movies first, they'll be too much of a brain fuck.

Samurai Champloo is another one to recommend.

Hm...Yeah. Those would be the first five I'd recommend. Everything else takes a certain measure of sheer will power to watch. It's not that they're bad, but more to the point if it's not something you're used to the transition can be jarring. Stay away from anything stretching beyond maybe 25ish episodes, and especially ones going past 100. The shows that are directly coinciding with mangas as they release tend to resort to plot / show killing filler stretches.

Oh god yes.

"Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann" is my input.

My suggestions are limited because you've limited yourself to Netflix. XP That in mind, you probably want Dubbed Anime rather than Subbed Anime, which only limits it further. But what you've seen so far should be good.

"Soul Eater" or "Konjiki no Gash Bell" are also good.

I don't like anime but an ex-girlfriend of mine years ago got me into Cowboy Bebop. Anime so good that even people who don't like anime think it's awesome.

Cowboy Bebop, Paranoia Agent, Evangelion, Samurai Champloo, and I enjoyed the first thirty or so episodes of Death Note, although there is a part where the plot just gets to ridiculous for me to bear (The last episode is good though).

I gave up on anime a long time ago, but these are the ones that I remember fondly.

EDIT: Heh, almost everyone put Cowboy Bebop first. :)

EDIT #2: Damn you, now I have to go watch Cowboy Bebop again! Thank the lord it's on youtube. :)

I agree, the extra-long type series tend to drag. It makes it a little more difficult for someone just getting into anime. I really liked several already mentioned, but a few more good for a beginner. "Armitage the Third" 4 episodes and a movie. Not much of a committment for a decent payoff. Also I really liked "Blue Seed." I note that lots of folks don't like Blue Seed, but it gives a non-Japanese viewer a little better look at their culture and some of their local folklore. To me that understanding made watching other series just that much easier to enjoy.

I think you should start with what every anime fan started with. Dragonball and Sailor Moon....then move on to good stuff.

Cowboy Bebop and FMA...The ORIGINAL; Brotherhood is too over-animated and crazy.

As someone who actively avoids anime like its a plague victim looking for a hug, there have been a few that were pretty good... check out Hellsing, and Trigun, they were fun.
