It's interesting because it's better than real life :p
more interesting things happen. and not to the viewer, so they don't suffer the consequences.

... That's like asking why people like movies or television in general. There are many different types of anime and not everyone likes all of them. So it isn't really possible to answer properly.

I personally have only watched around 10 different anime shows (not including kids shows when I was younger such as pokemon), I am extremely picky with what ones I watch just like with regular television. I by no means consider myself an anime "fan".

Fotball. I don't understand what the big deal about it is, I just don't get what's interesting about it.

And that's how it is. If you don't enjoy anime or understand it, then maybe it just isn't for you. I'm not fond of anime either. I sometimes watch it, much prefer to read manga, though. My point is, are you looking to be convinced about something that boils down to personal taste, or do you just want to know why others like watching it? Because the former is hard and almost pointless and the latter... is it curiosity?

Maybe it's because at least some of them provide more content than most western cartoon shows and actually employ devices like psychology and philosophy besides the usual gunfights, explosions and men in colorful tights.
But that's just a guess.

Anime is a style rather than a genre. If you like the cartoony style of things anime is pretty good. Giant robots are pretty awesome. I don't get the school-girl stuff though (Japanese are a bit odd in that respect). You can find just about anything. Awesome Fantasy sword swinging anime, Science ficion anime in space, and comedy anime which depends on knowing lots about Japan to actually get the references.
There is a flavour for just about everyone. Most people can find at least 1 anime they like, but not everyone. Each to their own I say.

Depends on the kind of anime, really. Anime is actually a wide spectrum, and it's difficult to really assign what is and isn't anime, since it becomes more of a "I can just tell" kind of thing.

If you mean the freaky-deaky anime with the weird faces and all, it's funny because it's a wacky cartoon with titties. If you mean serious anime, it's because most other cartoons can't have a serious plot without having dumb jokes and bland characters you can't like if you're older than 9 (see: Storm Hawks).

Anime is cartoons for man-children.

Anime =/= A Genre

Anime = Media Medium (try saying that five times fast)

If you like romance's, go watch a romance anime. Like action? Go for shonen.

If you look at an anime like Neon Genesis Evangelion and expect hilarious dialogue, you'll be disappointed. It's kinda the same as watching Worlds Funniest Animals and expecting a serious discussion on animal cruelty.

If you want to get anime, best thing you can do is figure out WHAT you want from anime, then look for it.

Some is good. Some is bad. Just like with everything. Akira is an excellent film, Death Note is very clever and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann...well, that's just flat out crazy awesome.

Why do people like books? Yes, I'm using the same argument that everyone else is using here. It's a different form of storytelling and expression. Just how watching a movie in CGI or some kind of style is better than live action for some, because it's being visually expressed in a different way.

And come now, that's like saying "I don't know what movies are about". Find a genre that interests you, and pursue it in terms of anime. Alternatively, you can join this user group we have here:

Anime in it's majority is based off of Manga's which in turn have many many different types. Action, Drama, Romance, Comedy, Adult, etc etc. Because so many are turned into Animated movies or series it can be said there is something for everyone. The only people who don't like anime are those which don't understand it, refuse to try it, or even has not yet found something they like.

It's never struck me as being particulary popular. It's always been underground, hard to get hold of, never within the mainstream. Some people are just attracted to things like that.

Personally I like animes and mangas for the visual style, which is probably why shonen is my favourite. Lots of action to be enjoyed in them.

But yeah its breath of fresh air from dc/marvel comics and your own personal taste.

Not sure, I like it, but not half of the people I know do, yet I'm okay with that. Maybe I'm immature and the cultural differences - which let Japanese Animation be what the more prudish segments of my own society might consider risque or alarming - gives me an excuse to watch cartoons and feel a strange form of nostalgia without an accompanying sense of emasculation. When I watch with subtitles, I can't recognise bad voice acting and even if things are incoherent and illogical I can blame it on translation screwups.

Yes, there was alot of subtle ribbing in there, but it's true, and I do like Anime. :D If nothing else, one could admire the pretty drawings and backgrounds.

I don't care much for anime. I know there are lots of different anime shows, I just don't really like the animation style and I haven't got into any anime shows. I also prefer the word "japanimation" because it sounds cooler.

Easy gateway for people that say they don't like anime: watch the first 5 episodes of Cowboy Bebop.

I have yet to meet someone that didn't think the end of Ballad of Fallen Angels was fucking epic.
