I don't understand how you don't get it. Anime is like american comics, a genre with a large variety of consepts. Sure some are close to impossible to understand why they get so populare, but the same things can be said in all of the western comicgenre.
Oh well, i guess it's all about each mans taste.
Don't compare things from America to things from Japan

its obvious whose better (U.S.A.)

Its just a form of entertainment for geeks like movies or comic books. There's really no difference in regular animation and Anime. It just, for some reason, appeals to nerds more. Most likely because it always has a very relatable protaginest fighting for the love of the hottest girl in the world with some supernatural shit thrown in for good measure.

Like I said, for nerds. In other words, me.
We all have an account on the Escapist, its pretty obvious we all are nerds :)

I think a lot of anime has more interesting stories and better characters than most western television or even film in some instances. Plus it being a drawn media it gives the creators a little more room to work with what they can and can't do.

Good Anime is similar to a good book or show, it easily trumps real life, it is deep, complex, and has people with really cool hair. (Humans are too shallow, understandable, and generally don't have hair up to my standards)
I personally wear my hair long and white.

I didn't get it for a while either. Actually I only just got into it about a couple of months ago. I have seen a few episodes of Cowboy Bebop, but that was years ago, like back when I was in secondary school. I was never really interested in it before, but I was bored one day so I found a few episodes of Lucky Star and found myself looking for more to watch. Also I got into Rosario + Vampire which actually has a pretty good story once you get into it. Anime has also got me reading manga as well. Again I was aware of manga, but I just didn't really take much notice of it. I liked the Lucky Star anime, so I found the manga on amazon. Then I bought volumes 1-8 of the Rosario + Vampire manga after watching the anime. I'm not claiming to be a master of all things anime/manga, but once you really get into it, most likely it won't let go for a long time. Right I better stop now otherwise I'll keep on typing about anime until the middle of next week.

Also one last thing, most people have been saying that Elfen Lied is a good anime, I watched the first episode and didn't really think that much of it. It was OK but that was about it. If you actually read all of my reply, then you should have a medal.

Anime in it's majority is based off of Manga's which in turn have many many different types. Action, Drama, Romance, Comedy, Adult, etc etc. Because so many are turned into Animated movies or series it can be said there is something for everyone. The only people who don't like anime are those which don't understand it, refuse to try it, or even has not yet found something they like.
OOO romance, well La de dah, isnt that gay

What's that about you being gay? anyway, romance is a well known and respected part of entertainment. Heck even your precious .hack has it's romance. :p

Well it's easy to make any kind of story you want with anime, personally I love anime. It's just like any other form of entertainment, some like it, some don't.

to behonest am not really a big fan off anime but i still understand what it is.

like any film or tv programe its just telling a story using its selected medium and the hint is in the name anime mean animation.

but i can see why alot of writters and fans of animation go for it because with it the possabiltys are endless because with live action alot of more underground film obivously cant have all the high level of effects that you expect from a big hollywood production so alot of the action is harder to do or dosent come of aswell but with animation drawing a big mech suit am geussing is alot cheeper than trying to make on look realistic in a live action

i think its a good medium just to get ur work and ideas out there

Cowboy Bebop is the other Gateway anime, other than Akira, SHIT! How Could I forget about that?!!!
It is a good medium. But people who don't like it prefer the live action stuff or are more americanized that I had anticipated.
Stuff from both cultures are going to have their cliches. And the characters are sort of hypermelodramatic, but keep in mind that the japanese are very expressive and eccentric people. Their anime expression reflect their culture. But once in a great while someone is going to come
along and make a manga which hopefully breaks convention. I.E. Akira, Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Deathnote, 3x3 eyes, and the Etc.

Remember to start with Akira when getting into manga. When getting into anime, start with either Akira, or Cowboy Bebop, and move on from there. Akira is perhaps the best because of the fact that is one of the few that used lip syncing dialogue and the animation of actual mouth movements in the animation. Not even bleach or evangelion can promote or show that.

well first off understand that anime is huge like western tv
theres alot of difference inside it
the japanese are different then us so there answer to everyday shows like two and a half men or degrassi are the childish skoolgirl type shows etc
you could examine that more but theres no point
if you enjoy that part of anime (which is like 50% at least) you are just a japanfan
if your lie me you enjoy the serious shows and the biggest thing i notice with them is that they have a solid plot from begining to end and they stick with it
western shows seem to need to have a mini story in every episode
each one needs a big buildup and climax ad the shows get disjointed and stupid
anime is not afraid to spend 5 eps on a conflict
the other thing is japan is not as filled with western ideals and moronic unrealistic people who showboat pathetic american lifestyles and are so detached from reality its sickening
instead they just stuff it with tits
plus since its all drawn and no live action its cheaper to go extreme
even when they go cg its cheaper
a drawn mech is way easier then a live action one

It's Jappan's graphical portrayal of Western Culture through an Eastern mindset, its what happens when your entire culture is pretty much wiped off the map by a concentrated application of fire and radioactive fallout and than rebuilt by outsiders.
serious lol man
he has a huge point tho japan got fucked up culturally by ww2
the weird part is they now idolize alot of american and german things just because thats were they came from

I dont understand what the big deal with anime is, other than .hack, i just dont understand what its about

if you please enlighten me about why everybody loves it, that would be nice
Waitwaitwait, you're saying that .hack is the only anime you DO get? Even anime fans have a hard time keeping up with what's going on in those series, so this just makes me think that the narrative style isn't for you.

They appeal to people because they remind us of the cartoons of our youth, though you can get away with watching it at any age, and because it is so easy to relate to Anime characters. The Japanese are just generally better writers than westerners.
