Anime needs a new name

Here's the brief:

In the English language, the word 'anime' (ann-ihm-a), sounds feeble and is stained with the residue of tentacle porn in the mind of the general public.

Anime needs a new name, go for it, escapist.

Edit: Half-asleep me doesn't seem to have been able to get the point of this across.

The sole reason for this thread, is for some light-hearted discussion on the fact that I don't think anyone would feel comfortable telling a new acquaintance that they watch anime, right off the bat, due to its negative connotations.

This is not to be taken too seriously.

Your useless knowledge of semantics is not needed here. One word can mean many different things, especially when it's used in a certain way by a lot of people over time.

well I hate the word "japanimation" I often hear people use it though, less confusing I suppose.

I have a friend who calls it "kids with big eyes" (he's not a fan) which always makes me laugh probably not a good choice though for taking it more seriously

but yeah i don't see a problem with anime, hell i still mistakenly call it manga sometimes (yes i know that is the written version) but i grew up in the 80's and everyone called it manga as they were the only uk distributor u could get hold of. a bit like Americans reffering to gaming as "playing Nintendo" regardless of the platform

And I don't know about some, but I still call Starburst "Opral Fruits", Plenty "Bounty" and Comedy Central "Paramount Comedy" If Anime changed its name, I would still call it Anime.

Naturally, I don't have a problem with the name, it's more that I cannot imagine using it in a public situation.

That, and the pretext behind this whole thread is that it's a place for suggestions due to it being too off topic for the thread itself.

Animu is a-ok by me for general usage. The people that aren't familiar with Japanese Animation outside of Hentai tend to not even know the medium enough know the term Hentai, they just call it tentacle porn.

I think the words you are looking for are Hentai or Echhi. If there are any bad connations like that around Anime in general well you can blame it on that. Changing the name won't help.

I prefer to be normal and just say "Japonese Cartoon", but in foruns I just write anime so that anime pricks don't bother me...

Eastern Animation. It more verbose and regal sounding while not sounding foreign. Of course that means we're also going to have Western Animation and then everyone who can't tell which is which will be confused.
