i had recently rewatched the anime Darker than Black, one of my favorite animes. i think one thing that makes darker than black so good is that it feels very original. most animes wind up being incredibly cliche, but darker than black seems to avoid the majority of cliches that most other animes fall into. its a dark and action-filled show, with a dramatic (sometimes even tearjerking) storyline. (ps: if you watch this anime, do not watch the new season Darker than Black: Ryuusei no Gemini, it is unnecessary and cliched crap)

so, are there any other animes out there like this? i am growing very tired of surviving on the same old cliched animes that sprout up every year,

damn, i used the word cliche a lot...

Edit: tho i'd probably enjoy a dark anime, that's not necessarily what i want; i just simply want an anime with a good, maybe dramatic, storyline, and the anime not being just a bunch of rehashed cliches like so many animes seem to be

Have you tried watching Higurashi no Naku Koro ni?
It is quite an interesting animé, dark, possibly scary, confusing until the second season (but it is meant to be), with some possibly sad bits.
I know it made me cry >.>
Here is the opening, for a feel of what it is like.
Edit: And for the not dark animé, I suggest Simoun
It is another interesting little one, although the ending kinda sucks a bit, in my opinion. Too open, but no sign of a second season >.>

Watch Neon Genesis Evangelion. I'll list the reasons momentarily.

It is not cliche.

It is a deconstruction of the giant robot genre.

It takes the tropes of mecha series and turns them upside down.

The main character is more realistic and tragic than most other teenage mecha pilots.

It has a legendary series mindscrew ending that is repaired with a subsequent movie that ties up almost every loose end.

It has a superlative dub which is saying something considering it was made and dubbed in the 1990s.

There are more, but it's late and I can't think of any.

Or you can watch Puella Magi Madoka Magica, which is essentially the Neon Genesis Evangelion of Magical Girl shows.

EDIT: I forgot Big O and Blue Sub No. 6. Those are both exemplary.

Oh lord...not an anime for me, but I second this if you want dark. My brother loves Higurashi, and Ive seen bits amd it makes me cring...hate the blue haired short girl though. Not for any good reason though...

One that comes to mind at the moment is Mahou Shojou Madoka Magica.

It's a magical girl anime, but it's entirely different from any other series from that genre. I don't want to spoil anything, but it's incredibly dark and intense, with a lot of twists and great action, and gets better as it goes. It's still airing (Currently at episode 9, with episode 10 later this week), and it's one of those few animes that's not based on a manga, and has induced a lot of speculations and theories among viewers.
So far it has been awesome.

That. Watch it. Now.

And as for others... I'll just list my favourite anime's:

Tenchi Muyo!
The Big O
Elfen Lied
Black Lagoon
Vampire Hunter D
Metropolis
Ghost in the Shell
Ninja Scroll
Outlaw Star
Blue Submarine No. 6
Clover
Death Note
Kodomo No Jikan
UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie

Some of those are dark as you requested.
Others not so much but still all very good ^_^
The darkest of those would probably be Big O, Elfen Lied, Black Lagoon, Vampire Hunter D and Ninja Scroll. Possibly Blue Sub No. 6 too. Just depends on your preference.

OK as much as i like a little gore now and again. this show is just sick and depraved. all it is just kids murdering each other.

OT: have you tried FLCL it's pretty bizare but entertaining none the less. also gurren lagann is pretty entertaining.

i don't necessarily want dark animes, not that i mind them. but what i really want are animes that aren't just rehashed cliches like so many animes seem to be, and preferibly something with a bit of a dramatic storyline

Most of those aren't cliched. The only one's I'd say are cliche are UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie and Tenchi Muyo as they're both harem anime, but they both manage to do it in a very unique way, at least in my opinion.

The rest I listed are either dark, mature (to some extent) or have great storylines. With the exception of Kodomo No Jikan... that's a cute funny loli anime ^_^

I'l just recommend the few that I'm familiar with:

Grenadier (Comedy/Action)
Black Lagoon
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Fullmetal Alchemist

I spend my time playing games, so I have a limited library of anime. Very limited.

Tenchi Muyo (and Love Hina for that matter) are not cliche. They made what became cliche before it was cliche. Just saying.

If you can get past the art style and into it. One Piece for sure.

I really enjoyed Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt too.

Very true, but that's if you either have yet to watch those type of anime or watched them when they first aired.
Watching them now after all the cliched crap there is out there now would probably have a different affect.

Tenchi Muyo however, is my all time favourite anime so I can't help but recommend it wherever I go, but by today's standards, I can only imagine it would seem quite an overdone plot at this point.

Holy crap, you liked The Big O? I loved that anime. No one I ever talk to even know what it is. I think I love you.

Blue submarine no.6 is another one like that, little unappreciated gem.

Metropolis is like my favorite movie ever, oh my god. :D
