When checking out new Anime's of various types, we're bound to check out one that we personally find get's way too much praise then it deserves, which really get's under your skin when you find there are other shows that you find that deserve more praise then they get.

Which shows have you found to be overrated?

Two shows that I've found get just a bit too much praise would have to be Full Metal Panic! (That and 2nd Raid, Not Including Fumoffu)and The Melancholy of You Know Who o_o

FMP I seem to like for certain reasons is overcome by the things I just cant stand about it which seem to be the things most people like about it. Kaname and Tessa get such praise while i find them to be so annoying and stupid (Especially Tessa, how the hell she got such power in her state beats me) and I recently watched the 2nd season and was baffled at the absolute mess of the story (or the fact that there wasn't much of a story at all). At least Fumoffu delivered nicely with some great comedy and of course the best thing the show has to offer, Sousuke Sagara ^_^ and the series did have some good music and animation.

The 2nd one was a pretty obvious choice for this topic but I find that this show had potential with it's setting (that was actually pretty interesting) which it just wasted on cliché anime school slice of life crap that I've seen to death (though it did have it's moments like the spaceship game one) and weak side characters (Kyon and Nagato were the only ones I liked, Mikuru was irritating and was just there to be molested by Haruhi and Itsuki was just boring). The 2nd season was rubbish due to an obvious major flaw (Hint: 8) while I thought the movie was actually pretty good. But that's just my opinion, which I don't want to drag out into a rant :p

NOTE: This is not a thread to start a flamewar of disapproving peoples opinions!

I wouldn't really see either as particularly highly rated. No one's talked about them in years. Even the Haruhi movie had an unusually quiet reception.

On topic. Moretsu Space Pirates is kinda boring.

In before all of them.

I don't like most shonen titles, though I suppose that's rather normal around these parts. I also really do not like the Ghost in the Shell movie. The show was a thousand times better in every possible way. I watched recently with a friend and we were both severely disappointed.

I'm suprised noone said naruto yet O.O
I just don't like how they've strayed too far from the "ninja" aspect of their ninja show. Just because you call it a jutsu doesn't stop it from being magic >>

I agree completely with you here. It had the germ of a fascinating awesome show but did squander it on moe and school antics. I want to know about the Esper war and how time-travel human being deal with a Data entity not wherever Mikuru will wear a Santa costume or not.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is mine. It just seemed to throw in biblical references and be needlessly obscure and unforthcoming with details in an excuse to be depth. And loads of people seem to have bought it. Was a fantastic monster of the week show though...

Nausicca of the Wind. It's just so preachy and dishonest in how it portrays the environment. Nature is not divine and pure and ruined by the sinful presence of humanity, and Nausicca is basically insect Jesus.

Again though, brilliant visuals and a breathtakingly large world.

I loved the first episode. I hated everything else. I'm only mentioning it because my friend thought it was the most glorious thing in existence.

I've never seen a main character cry so fucking much.

And speaking of crying, I tried watching Clannad. Maybe it was just too hyped up for me, but I was expecting so much more than what I got.

Clannad. Yes, I watched After Story and it was quite sad at the end, but was it worth ploughing through two seasons of fucking shit crap? I think not.

I was disappointed with full metal alchemist. The premise is fine but I really couldn't get into the main characters and i didnt really enjoy the first handful of episodes so it got dropped.

Also Baccano!, the first episode was awful. It's going to take a lot of convincing to make me watch the rest.

And Aww, i loved Eureka 7 and Full Metal Panic?... Both beautifully flawed series.

Soul Eater- Hated the characters, the story's your typical generic shounen, and the action is nothing extraordinary. There is nothing in this 51 episode series that made it worth watching. Thoughtout the whole thing I was just kinda pissed and annoyed.

Elfen Lied- Loved it the first time I've seen it a few years ago, but the more I seen it, the worse it gets. Gaping plot holes, some bad animation, and some stuff that just comes across as too silly for this supposedly "dark" anime, and the violence is way too cartoon-ish to be disturbing. The manga is better, but not by much.

Ano Hana- Has a nice premise, but a lot of the drama felt a little too forced and "in your face", and at times way too over-the-top. It didn't have the effect that it intended.

Fate/Stay Night (The anime, not the VN.)- This one's probably popular due to the VN, but the anime itself is very generic and mediocre, and the main character is an idiot. The other Fate anime, like Fate/Zero, Carnival Phantasm, and even Unlimited Blade Works I thought were way better.

Katanagatari- I have nothing against dialogue heavy shows. I loved a lot of dialogue heavy shows, but when you have beautiful, distinct visuals like these, I expect to see so much more, but the majority of it is just people talking with no visual flare. When there is action, though, it looks fantastic, but even during the action scenes do the characters feel the strong need to explain their moved in great details, so you're left with about 30 seconds of fighting and 30 minutes of people talking about stuff I don't care about or should've been explained early on before the fight started. It just doesn't take advantage of it's visuals. There is so much you could've do with it but most of it is wasted on scenes of characters just talking. Also, I never got invested in the story or characters. For a story about two travelers searching for 12 special swords, it felt needlessly complicated, and becomes very hard to follow at some points. If I have one good thing to say about it, it's that the last episode was BRILLIANT! But overall it was pretty underwhelming.

Akira- I liked it more as an action movie than a psychological thriller. I admit I do have respect for it because of the influence it had on current animes, but the film itself just doesn't hold up very well. The manga, on the other hand, I heard is very good.

It has been a while since I watched the show though, so I wouldn't be surprised if you were right about the first episode. It speeds up fast though. I suppose you likely have better things to do then to rely on the opinions of a stranger as to how you should spend your free time though.

Another for Full Metal Alchemist.

As Raven's Nest said, the premise is great, but the execution is dull and saltless. Maybe it's because there's too many characters, maybe it's because of the poorly placed comical interludes, or maybe it's because of the bland square-ish character designs, but both the original series as well as Brotherhood left me totally unimpressed.

I never really get what's the big deal with Neon Genesis Evangelion and this is coming from a mech fan.
Yes I never get the whole religon subtext in the show and I just hate the depression that oozing out of it. If I wanted to watch a emo kid and a girl that went deeper and deeper into depression I would just go back to High School.

Definitely Full Metal Panic and Elfen Lied. FMP is just silly (school girls, robots and poor physics), while EL had some of the most bland and poor characterisations I've ever seen.

Death Note is pretty good but it's nothing as clever as the fans made it out to be. Problem with those types of story layouts is it's never going to be any where near as entertaining as the first time you watch it through.

Dragon Ball Z wins the title since it takes forever to get anywhere in the story and it's written for baby's. Well OK, it had it's moments in the early seasons.

One Piece is just average, nothing special about it at all, except the wacky art style.

bleach-the first 50 or so episodes (till the end of the ss arc) and then it just drops off a cliff.
I disagree, I felt that the show dropped off a cliff as soon as they went the Soul Society at all. It was GREAT as a monster of the week show, why'd they throw it all away ;_;
