Anonymous' attack on Kevin Rudd

On Wednesday 11/02/10 the group Anonymous sent a warning to Kevin Rudd to stop the internet filtering system from becoming a reality or they would launch another after the one they did that day, which brought down the Australian government website by sending it excessive amount of pornography via e-mail to temporarily bring down the sites.

Whats your opinion on the internet filtering system? was what they did right? Being Australian the dreaded "Black List" is hovering over us and possibly of my favorite sites. Luckily, if Aktinson is out-voted in the South Australian regional election (which he most certainly will) there may be a chance of stopping this. Coming from SA, I fell ashamed of living in SA because of him! And I was born in Victoria!
So whats your say?

I wouldn't be so certain of Atkinson getting removed. He's in a strong seat for his party, a near-historic swing would be required to remove him. Needless to say, if you live in his seat you need to spread the word.

Mmmmm, that's true, but I know a lot of people against him and one of my friends is trying o get everyone he knows to vote against him. So it might take a while, but it can be done

Well, the way I see it is that what they're doing and what they did is basically like the Boston Tea Party, only with porn. And all that did was inevitably lead the colonies to war with England, so following that... Australia is going to war with England. Good luck.

Good on Anonymous. Australian censorship of media is really getting way too far, not just with games, but with other media like film too (18+ rated films no longer allowed to be displayed in store shelves, for example.

Well another thing the internet filter is (possibly) targeting is pornography, which a lot of casual internet users use the internet for, so that helps and a lot of people hate him I guess....

Well,while I get a few laughs out of this way of protest I think it is the wrong signal.

I mean doesn't it proofs the fascist government right? Aren't we gamers hackers with criminal intents? They will that use totally for propaganda and it is hard to justify this act against non-gamers. Non-gamers will see it as it is a crime probably done because of the wish to play violent video games. Do not worry they will spin it that way.

Hence I think this action did more harm than any good.

Removing Atkinson wont do anything to the Internet filter I'm afraid. Senator Conroy, the broadband minister, is responsible for the Internet filter. Seeing as how the filter is only going to be put in place following the election it would appear that the best bet to remove it is to vote out labor and put Abbott as PM. No guarantee that he wont go through with the Internet filer himself anyway and we could end up in a worse situation.

I don't support Anonymous' attack on The PM's website though. Their heart is in the right place but threats from the Internet probably only strengthen Conroy's and Rudd's resolve. Besides, a quick search of Anonymous probably comes up with what many people will consider a good reason to censor the Internet.

This post represents my views.

To reiterate; Although Anon's heart was in the right place and I can endorse their spirit, this may well give the anti-internet freedom groups more ammunition for their .50 cal machine gun of hate and misinformation.

The problem with getting Abbott in as PM is that he's ALSO a hardcore conservative Christian. Australia is pretty much screwed over a barrel no matter what happens, unfortunately. The only progressive thinkers at the moment in politics are stuck in minor parties who don't carry any of the vote.

There ought to be a new rule brought in for democracy, that if the winner gets less than 25% of the possible votes, it's all off and another election will be held in 3-6 months.

That way, if there's only a choice between two very similar candidates, withholding your vote would actually count for something.

It's like how it is in the UK, with Labour and the Conservatives almost melting into the same damn party, just reading the daily newspaper headlines and basing their policies on it.

I'd personally have far more respect for my leaders for example if, when asked about the latest reality show winner, to say 'Sorry, I'm busy running the country, so I haven't been watching it'.

I can't even blame them for lying any more, if I was running for leader of my country, I'd lie thru my teeth every step of the way, then when I got into power, I'd start slapping things into place that we NEED instead of what we want, balls to being popular, popular doesn't fix anything. When asked by the media about my declining popularity, I'd say 'tough, ask me again in four years when things are better, I'm not here to be famous.' Of course I'd end up famous as I'd be assassinated within 6 months I'm sure.

Sure it's popular to run on a mission of stopping child porn. What I don't like is the idea that wanting a free uncensored internet means I want child porn. Child Porn is still illegal without a massive nationwide firewall, you don't need to stop gaming to stop the greater horrors of the internet, just as you don't warrant amputation for an ingrown toenail, and by the sound of it, with the current people in charge, you'd lose both arms before the leg with the toenail came off.

The greens, Liberals, nationals independants basically EVERY political party that isn't labour has said they would oppose this, and since Labour doesn't hold the overwhelming majority in the Upper House it will not be passed.
