Depending on who you are, Anonymous is a righteous freedom fighter or an online terrorist group. Either way, Sony is in the organization's sights for its civil suits against PS3 hackers, and it would appear that the gathering of personal info and takedown of PSN is only a taster.

"So far, all Sony has seen from us is poking and prodding," claimed the group. "A simple salute to let them know we?re coming. Make no mistake, what you saw today and thought to be frustration is merely preparation for what?s to come. We said, expect us. Counting us out would be a mistake."

Anonymous' attacks on the PlayStation Network have earned backlash from gamers, something that the group acknowledges: "The consumers in this are as one might call, collateral damage. We are very cognisant of the fact that we are not making friends nor allies among the average consumer with our attack. This is unfortunate as a concern should always be, will the very people we seek to support not see what it is we are trying to achieve."

"In this case, many don?t. There has been a lot of hate spread throughout the internet and over forums that we are being reckless and simply punishing consumers more than Sony. To the consumers I would say: before you judge us, take the time to understand us."

----------------------------------------------

No matter who side you're taking in the court case, this is pretty stupid.
Sooner or later they need to learn that you can't save hostages with shotguns and a guns blazing attitude. I don't appreciate being acceptable collateral damage.

Look everyone on PSN its going to be national go outside and play/play offline until anon finds something better to do. I'm just glad I have an xbox with a benevolent company that will never come under attack unless they do something to piss off the internets...

Damn, its only a matter of time before they get hit bc everyone on the internet sympathizes with Google.

But yeah, feelings on the whole thing. People with a ps3 should be able to do whatever they want with it. Sony has the right to kick anyone off their PSN or w/e if they tamper with the software but sewing I PERSONALLY don't feel is right
Feelings on anon. Well they are hitting SONY where it hurts, the wallet by shutting down the PSN and hitting their website. I'm sure they are more of a house hold name now, but not in a good way. Hope phase II is more thought out.
Whats wrong with sewing? I like repairing my clothing, or having it actually be clothing in the first place. Should everyone be forced to hold their garments in shape by using safety pins?

lol, touche

I guess I learned my lesson for typing while impaired. And I guess in my defense I don't think Sony would be very good at sewing ^.^

Man, I liked it when Anonymous was a scary, dark group that silently took things down every once in a while. Now their operations with Wikileaks, WBC and PS3 just makes them annoying.

Still, this will be fun to watch.
Anonymous was never a group.

However, I agree that they used to have standards. Now it just seems like any hobbyist hacker can do whatever they want in the name of Anonymous.

I DON'T CARE if you're mad about them removing Linux or suing your buddies. YOU, not Sony, are fucking with MY ability to play the games I fucking bloody well paid for.
Well, I guess that's the only useful thing that can come out of there attacks. You being pissed off that you couldn't use PSN for a few hours? Well, that's how pissed off the people who bought PS3s for both Linux and games felt. And they didn't even get their full functionality restored a few hours later like you did.

Maybe that's their plan all along? These attacks help because now other customers who legally bought and legally used their PS3s as advertised suddenly see what it's like to have advertised functionality ripped away, and then become more sympathetic to all the Linux users who got shafted by Sony?

If that is their plan, it's still a bad one. Most people are just going to be focused on being mad at anonymous. Plus it doesn't make them any better than Sony (well, maybe just slightly less scummy, because PSN came back after a few hours whereas Install Other OS is still gone, but they're still only slightly less shitty than Sony).

Buying a console is buying a license to use Sony's software and hardware.
No it's not. Buying a console is owning the console. Buying SOFTWARE is buying a license, but the hardware is yours. If you go online and violate the additional PSN Terms of Use that you need to agree to to use online services, they can ban you from PSN. And if you keep making new accounts on the same console to do bad things on PSN, they can just ban your console from getting on PSN regardless of the account that tries to log in. But they cannot brick your PS3 because that is YOUR PS3 and you still have the right to do whatever you want to do with YOUR PS3 as long as you aren't using any other services like PSN.

Pretty much this, I don't care if you're mad at Sony we all have our lives, we all have to work, we all have the right to fucking relax, Geohot ran off to South America, and we all have the right to play games online if we have a PS3, and we don't give a fuck about the the tiny minority of people who wouldn't use otherOS for piracy (which likely DOESN'T include Geohot). As LastGreatBlasphemer says:
Geohot went on VACATION. He didn't run away. Didn't you get that memo? We knew that about a day after Sony lied and said he fled to get away from the case. No, he just went on a planned vacation.

And you should give a fuck about the people who wouldn't use Install Other OS for piracy (and how do you know if that includes GeoHot or not?). Forget LastGreatBlasphemer (he makes no sense anyway; Sony took away both freedom [less features and rights for you] and safety [the PS3 has been cracked wide open now and PSN has more hackers ruining online games that Sony won't do anything about than ever] when they took away Install Other OS. we didn't trade freedom for more safety, we traded freedom for less safety), Martin Niemöller said something much more important:
First they came for the communists, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak out for me.
If Sony wins and gets complete power over a console you're supposed to own and whether they want you to keep being able to use advertised features or not, that's bad. After that, they may eventually come after a feature you want, and nobody will be able to stand up to them because they already won and can do whatever the hell they want. So yes, you should care about Sony taking away Install Other OS even if you didn't use it. It shows how little they care about your rights as a consumer and as their customer.

To the consumers I would say: before you judge us, take the time to understand us.
...Kay, let me try and break down the logic of this attack in an effort to understand.

Sony has made you rage because they're being whiny bastards over someone taking them down a peg after they said their system was uncrackable. This rage has currently been channeled into two fronts.

1) Dox have been gotten of Sony execs and many an unwanted pizza will find it's way to their doorstep.

2) Mess with Sony's websites and gaming network.

Front one I can understand, by annoying the execs to the brink of insanity the hope would be Sony backs off the case simply because it's not worth being harassed by the internet 24/7.

Front two, not so much. You take down the PSN, thousands of players can't use it and get filled with rage. Not rage at Sony but rage at you guys; you've cast yourself as the villain in the eyes of the same people you're trying to help. On the flip side you cause all kinds of havoc for the group of people trying to fix the network and websites, costing Sony untold amounts of money to undo the damage you've done. Because the attacks are occurring as a direct result of their current high profile lawsuit with GeoHotz the end goal is to make them see it as not profitable to continue with the case; by way of constantly having to fix the PSN and their other websites.

In the end though Sony is such a profitable company the only front possible to pay off is front one, all front two accomplishes is galvanizing the public against you. Not that you really care, it's all for the lulz anyway. Essentially front two is a pointless effort and has little to no chance of effecting the outcome. Meaning that front two is either simply meant to piss people off and get them talking about the case; possibly to the effect of it gaining more media attention which might (and that's a big might since the public and media are stupid) turn the public opinion against Sony and the ensuing shitstorm of bad press would force them to cease pursuit of the case, or it's just being done for the lulz because somebody got bored.

While I somehow doubt that much thought was put into all this, that's the understanding I get from it. Unless of course the point to understand is that there's indeed nothing to understand and we all should just stay the hell out of their way.

Is that a joke?

I'd like to point out that I did state I was aware of my own hypocrisy. I've been a gamer all my life. As such, I've been feeding the beast all my life, probably more than many people. I get consumerism.

Contrary to what you may think, I am not sitting here with a smug look on my face asking "What are you going to do now, Sony," expecting them to buckle. Sony can say "eff you" and pull PSN or whatever they want to do, and I'm well aware of that and prepared for whatever consequences unfold. All I want is for Sony to see that we can say "eff you," too.

*shrug* As long as they don't gather personal info on the PSN users, then I have no quarrel with them.
