From Wired.com:

?Anonymous? has struck again ? this time declaring war on Australia.

Hackers identifying themselves as ?Anonymous? launched a denial-of-service attack Wednesday against a web site for Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to protest a government proposal to filter internet content, according to the Australian Associated Press.

The hackers also targeted a web site belonging to the Australian Communications and Media Authority and planned to attack a web site for Communications Minister Stephen Conroy as well.

According to a message posted by the purported hacker on a different web site, the government proposal to introduce a mandatory internet filtering plan would amount to China-like censorship.

?Not only will your rights be at stake, our internet speeds will slow down by 70 percent, be mandatory for all Aussies and will not protect us from evil AT ALL.?

The attack began at 7:00 p.m. local time and within 18 minutes the prime minister?s site was down. But it?s unclear if the site?s collapse was a result of the attack, or a defensive move by an administrator.

A note posted by the hacker at 7:11 p.m. read, ?we?ve confirmed on site (via a source) that the sites due to be attacked have been taken down from the coordination page, possibly before the raid.?

The Associated Press reported that more than an hour later the prime minister?s site was still down.

Either way, a government spokesman said the attack was misguided since the internet filtering plan only proposed to block content such as child porn and images depicting rape and bestiality.

?The campaign that they?re mounting is erroneous and misinformed,? the spokesman said.

Is anonymous doing the right thing to show their anger over these restrictions, or are their actions just going to freak out the politicians and get the laws passed reflexively?

I don't know who's right or wrong in the campaign info. If the governments right then the hackers are fools but if the hackers are correct then the government are screwing themselves over.

Except for the fact that they have a list of banned websites that nobody is allowed to look at, and that it's illegal to link to any of these websites, even though there's no way to know which websites are on this list since it isn't avaliable to anyone.

Thankfully they got rid of that list once Wikileaks got ahold of it, but still this is a horrible, horrible idea. This is really on Chinese/Iranian levels of censorship.

oh yeah, before anybody decides to blame my country. It wasnt our idea to censor your internet it was your government, they simply came to us with YOUR tax money and hired us to set up the filter and firewall. Which i might add is ineffective considering i can talk to you guys from china.

Are they also going to censor stories about rape? How do you know if the images depicting rape is actually rape or just acting? Are they also going to ban rape hentai or just 'live action' pictures? After all, in hentai it's just...well, a piece of art. Fairly disturbing piece of art from where I'm sat but it's art nonetheless and should be treated as such. But then, for pictures of 'actual' rape how do you know that's not equally as falsified as the hentai is? I would guess that it's damn sure easier to film a porn of a girl acting like she's being raped than getting away with an actual sex crime.

I get that rape is bad. No argument. But once you start censoring pictures, then you have to move on to words and then...well, slippery slope goes here.

Gotta say I don't really have much sympathy for the Aussie government. Sorry, censorship=bad. I may not always agree with Anonymous' tactics but I can't really fault them here.

Censoring the internet is something a government should never think of doing. It's a sure way to block the citizens free information flow, completely putting a group of people at the mercy of their government.
In my opinion, I'd want hackers to do the same for me, should this happen in America.

Side note:
4.Anonymous is legion
5.Anonymous never forgives
6.Anonymous can be a horrible, senseless, uncaring monster
Any government not realizing these core rules of the internet will be dealt with accordingly.

Sidenote: Not related to 4chan in anyway...

Said spokesmen is full of shit.

The proposed bill would censor 17+ material as Australia's highest rating for interactive media content (Games) is MA15+. This bill mostly came around due to SecondLife (YOU BASTARDS!) as secondlife is rated 18+ and Australian government would rather bann 17-18+ rated games and so forth rather then just simply add a new rating to their rating system.
