Anon should stop being a Hacktivist group and start being an Activist group. Hacktivism wont do much against a Cartel, but real-life Activism could.
Really?
A bunch of dorks can bring down the people that the police and army haven't had luck with?
Well I knew they all dress up for Comi-Con buy I didn't realize they actually posses superpowers...

Only thing these dorks can do effectively is mess with cartels information and there is no small amount of power in that.

Wait, aren't the Zetas one of the most violent drug cartels? I mean, I'm all for taking them down, but when considering the level of violence they display, I dunno.

Rightousness, aka righteousness is all about making a website hiccup for a few hours.
Then we can ALL forget about how they hacked a website where many people downloaded kiddy porn, then they released the names of all those involved to the police. Yep, that websti totally came back up.
People were convicted of kiddy porn because of anonymous tips? I missed that credible story. Do you have a link for it? I google'd it and didn't see that.

EDIT: Oh wait, you never said there were any convictions.... never mind.
There was a thread on it a couple of days ago.
Heres a link to it:

Yeah, I have a really bad feeling the man in the video is going to end up with his face stitched to a soccer ball within the next month. The cartels have tracked down people posting on the internet anonymously before, it's not a stretch to think they could do it again, especially when directly blackmailed. The Zetas are ex military, trained by the Mexican and US governments, and armed with US equipment. I guarantee those armored Humvees, hand grenades, automatic M-4's, .50 machine guns, and M203 grenade launchers weren't bought in a gun store in Texas, they were taken when they defected, stolen after they defected, or are bought from corrupt members of the Mexican government and military officers. I think in taking on a cartel Anonymous is going into the deep end and it's filled with blood and sharks. Most governments would detain them, maybe stick them in jail for a year or two. The cartels won't hesitate to burn them alive in an oil drum, or decapitate them and hang them from a bridge.

Exactly. Doing internet attacks has a limit to how effective it can be, but as people we can change stuff. Anon COULD make significant differences if, as an entity, it went beyond the internet and the DDoS attacks and started doing public things, representing the same people it represents now, only with a wider audience and a louder voice.

This is of course assuming Anonymous actually have any revealing information on the cartel. I don't doubt their abilities but It's more than hopefully to assume they could single-handedly defeat the cartel.

so one of the Anon members has been kidnapped and Anon threatens to release a Zeta member list.
I think this is more effective then having the police considering the local police has been trying that for years.

I've always wanted to see the Anonymous idiots put down and now it looks like they're going to pick a fight with the one group not afraid to do so.

Looking forward to this.

NUKE EM ALL .
See I think that is a neat idea, why don't we do that?
Probably because of the thousands of innocent people that would get in the way. I know it's a pain, but even the US govenment can't murder civilians... Well, they aren't supposed to anyway.

Anonymous has added the Mexican drug cartel Zetas to their increasingly disparate range of hacking targets.

While Anonymous may sometimes be somewhat lopsided in their agenda I think this and the recent Operation Darknet show that they occasionally manage to come firmly down on the side of rightousness.
Dude, edit your OP, you've don't even have half the story. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=bJORGO1Q2VY

One of "their own" has been kidnapped by the Zetas. And they threaten to expose the identities of many of the cartel members, even their addresses and everything, if he is not released and in good health. THAT'S the story. On Novermber 5th, if their fellow member is not freed, they will execute this plan. Unconformable rumors say that this threat has been retracted, but who knows. I read about this in swedish media, I can link that too, maybe people who want to can use google translate or something. Unless they find a story in their own language.

It seems that most of anon have stopped it because of the risks.
But Sabu says it is still on ...

Now this is the real problem with Anon they are not a team they are a group of individuals that do what they want ....
Well I hope they do good against the Zetas.

Fixed that for you.

OT: According to wikipedia, they threaten to release personal information of people who are suspected as working with the cartel. Which won't hold up in any court of law, now will it? Sure, it might give some leads. But that's about it.
The threat to the cartel doesn't come from the law. If these names are released, the Cartel has enemies that will target those exposed by Anon. If Anon does have these names, there is no question as to whether they could seriously hurt the Cartel.

The question is whether they actually do have access to what they say they do. I'm somewhat dubious as to whether they could find out that much online. Either they have the Cartel by the balls, or it's one of the ballsiest bluffs made in a long time.

Anyway, chances of success? Low. Chances of claiming success? High. Let's just hope the Cartels don't start killing off every bored teenager who says they're part of Anonymous. The actual members behind this would be impossible to trace, but there could be victims regardless.

Edit: Also, stop saying Anonymous is doing a good thing. I actually kind of like Anonymous, but they're not - they're doing the selfish thing. One of their own is in trouble, and they are trying to get him out of it, which I can admire, but this could honestly get a lot of people killed in the crossfire. If Anon releases names, and they're correct names, it will possibly start a vicious gang war. If they're bluffing, a lot of innocent people could be killed in retribution from the Cartel. Neither option is really very good. Although, I do at least hope this suceeds and that the kidnapped person is released unharmed.
