I've read countless threads here about those elusive members of the fairer sex who share some of the more esoteric interests that define this forum community. The bottom line, usually refuted, was that they are not nearly as elusive as people make them out to be.
I agree with that, and my issue is another one. I've come across a couple of these women. They are genuinely smart, funny and pleasant to be around. They understand references to a variety of literature, music and film that's considered to be outside of the mainstream, and they've got a nice, dark sense of humour. The problem is that, thus far, none of them have been what would commonly be considered 'attractive' [physically speaking], with the exception of one lady I dated for a while.
Is there any particular reason that women of the geeky persuasion have a habit of letting themselves go? I understand that the same kind of guys are generally not the most attractive themselves, but it doesn't seem quite as pronounced.

Please don't flame. I'm not trying to generalize. Just making an observation that, for me, has been true more often than not.

Well, most geek girls I meet are attractive. Why weren't these girls you're talking about attractive? Details, please.

Weight problems, dishevelled, bad choice of clothing. Like the male gamer stereotype, but without the neckbeard.

Because we all have to be attractive? And that different people have different view on what is attractive?

Why does it matter?

Is this your lame attempt at trying to get girls on here to post their pictures to prove you wrong or something? It's a very general stereotype to say that all 'geek girls' are unattractive, I think the truth is that you just don't know if someone is a 'geek' or not just by looking at them. And also maybe you are just shallow and picky.

OK you wanna know the real secret? the ladies are geekier than guys full stop, always have been.
Next time your with a group a ladies.... any ladies listen to what they are talking about, I mean really listen, and I'm not talking about the content or what they are talking about as no doubt a lot of it won't catch your fancy......buuuuut listen to how they over obsess about these things they are discussing, the passion, how they just keep on going on and on about it?
Ok I'll use an average suburban lady in a shoe store as an example, yes its cliche but I really cant be bothered, the lady will enter said shop approach the attendant and 1st try on the shoes that she wants and knows are their prior to even entering said store, she will then put said shoes back and proceed to try on every single pair of shoes in that store in her size before finally retuning to her 1st choice that she was always going to buy and leaving with them.
Now is that kind of behavior starting to look/sound familiar?

I rest my case.

Meh I've noticed a 50/50 split. I dated a "geeky girl" for a couple of years who was gorgeous. Plenty of girls that I went to Uni with (I studied Games Design) were really pretty as well. But then some were pretty nasty looking (which isn't to say they weren't awesome people on the inside.)

What makes you think I'm looking for pictures? I was merely pointing out that a lot of women who share my interests aren't attractive in the conventional sense, and I was wondering why.
I stated I wasn't trying to make generalizations, and that the opinion was based solely on my personal observations.

I know if somebody is a 'geek' by talking to them, and of the 'geeky' girls I have talked to, the majority have turned out to be physically unattractive.

That is a really good point.

Exactly. A geek girl friend of mine looks fantastic, and regardless of the fact that she likes british guys (which I am), attraction doesn't come into it on any level. We're fantastic friends, and I don't really care what she looks like. I can still have a laugh with her.

One person you know is X, therefore any claims to the effect that other people of that sort are Y is false?

Just 3 days ago, met an incredibly striking young lass. Extremely cute, and a bit later on I find out she's pretty much the biggest LOTR fan there is. As in, I think she speaks Elvish...

They exist. In actual places, doing normal things. Meet more people. =D

I'm so sick of 'geek girl' threads. The questions been asked and answered multiple times before, can we talk about something different like puppies or space ships?

Now a lot of women on the big E [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.301088-So-whatcha-look-like-Escapists?page=12#12014604] are quite attractive. Are they not geeky enough?

As you just said about the male gamer stereotype. Before being a "geek" was mainstreamed. Most guys who were considered geeks had weight problems, were disheveled, and had a bad choice in clothing.

Not saying that people who don't have these problems aren't real geeks, just pointing out the original geek stereotype.

So you generalize the whole female geek group as a whole, I remark on a known exception, and how it doesn't matter and you say I'm the one denying that others are different?

"The problem is that, thus far, none of them have been what would commonly considered 'attractive' [physically speaking], with the exception of one lady I dated for a while."

"The problem is that" ? Seriously ? How is the attractiveness of geeky women "the problem" for you, is it that the only use you have for women is their potential as dating partners ? Or are they hurting your pwecious widdle eyes ?

"Is there any particular reason that women of the geeky persuasion have a habit of letting themselves go?"

Dunno, same reason that men of the geeky persuasion have "a habit" of "letting themselves go" maybe ?

"I understand that the same kind of guys are generally not the most attractive themselves, but it doesn't seem quite as pronounced."

Yeah because you would be in a position to judge, what with the first thing you do when you encounter a male geek being sizing them up as a potential sexual partner.

"Please don't flame."

Please don't write flame-bait.

"I'm not trying to generalize. Just making an observation that, for me, has been true more often than not."

Hah, that's the funny one. So let me sum up. You've "come across 'a couple' of these women". You have noticed they weren't attractive to you (except for one, which makes the whole thing even funnier). You proceed to make a post entitled "a new angle on the whole 'geek girls' thing" (as opposed to, say, "An observation I've made of a couple of those 'geek girls' people"). In this post you ask questions of the "habits" of "women of the geeky persuasion".

Wow, I'd hate to see you when you ARE trying to generalize.

So if I'm following your main inquiry right, it's "Why ya'll so fugly?" Then in the same breath you ask everyone not to flame you. Good luck.

I hate to tell you fella, but as a bisexual guy, I can fairly safely say that most of you lads aren't too hot either. When we're young, there's maybe 50% of each gender that are conventionally attractive. By your late 20s, that's dropped to 25%. By 35 it's 10% or less. But by then you don't care so much about 'conventional attractiveness' - you know your personal quirks and attractions well enough that you don't really need the rest of the package, physically speaking - so long as the mental side is there, and the right boxes are ticked physically (and as you get to know yourself, those boxes becomes fewer, but more important), it's all fine.

But for some weird reason - I'd say the fashion industry and the unrealistic portrayal of women in film/tv (in terms of conventionally hot v normal proportionality) has something to do with it - so many guys think of your typical female as someone in the hottest 10%. They envisage the girl/woman that they mentally drool about, and then use that as the 'baseline' for measuring what's 'average'. Sorry to break the news felllas, but even when you're at your best, only about half of people are ever attractive, whether male or female. Geek or not.

If you've only ever met one 'geek girl' that's attractive then you're probably a slight outlier, marginally below average in terms of your encounters. Same for a girl who has only ever met one 'geek guy' - or one 'jock guy' for that matter - that's attractive. Not everyone is goodlooking, and chances are that includes you.
