They didn't seem to blame video games too much, so that isn't the problem.
The real problem is about the irresponsible father apparently not being blamed for being irresponsible with his gun and leaving it loaded where the children had easy access to it.

Thats why I'll never be going to america....guns being kept in houses....it being your rights to bear arms and all that malarcy....It's just crazy in my honest opinion.

This situation was inevitable.

This will continue to happen.

*sighs* at America.

And yet Americans persist on having firearms legal because an old piece of paper says so, these accidents serves them right for being stupid to be honest.
And I absolutely love people like you two who take the time to insult Americans with these articles.

Do you know how many more murders there would be without self-defense? Criminals will get guns, it doesn't matter what freaking law you put on it, it will always be possible. Just look at drugs, people still get them when there's laws on the illegalization of them. Oh, but what happens when the normal American citizen gets freaking robbed at gun-point, huh? Just let the robber take all their stuff? Well, that would happen a LOT more with stricter gun laws.

The people who are to blame are the crappy parents, not gun laws. Guns aren't the ones who force people to commit crimes, the person is. The criminal will always find a weapon to commit the crime.
Excuse me but you don't need it for self protection that is utter Bullshit.
In England we don't need guns...sure there are one or two criminals who magically find some fire arms....but you don't see Mass Genecide do you?
You do in America why??? Because guns are legal and the people there see carrying one as a right, making them think they are bigger then they really are...Put em in a ring with an english east end bloke and watch em get there face smashed in old school style.

We do not need to have Fire arms at all ever...period. They should take it out the bill of rights...Traditional people like that should be removed from society along with people following religion...stuff written in a book Fecking ages ago and people still follow shit like that, like little sheep.

The World needs too move on.... progress and get rid of all this Traditional Yee Oldy Bullshit.

They were arguing over a game and he was killed. It never says anything about it being the games fault.

If you replaced the word videogame with ice cream would you say that the article is blaming ice cream for his death ..... no probably not. Stop looking for conflict.

Before I say this, I have to say that the first guy who responded to my post freaking owned me, but I'm too lazy to quote him right now. Maybe I'll edit it in later.

But wow. Are you freaking serious? GET RID OF ALL PEOPLE WHO FOLLOW RELIGION?

That's the most retarded statement I've ever read on this freaking site. You know what that would mean?

AT LEAST 1/2 (I think?) of the world's population is removed if we follow that. That includes President Obama. That means the entire freaking US would go into mass riots. Where you gonna put them all, huh? Kill them, right?

And then we put away all the people who have guns too. That's a lot of people there. Where you going to put them, too? Mental institutes? Yea, that would be great. Let's try to fit 1/2 of the world's population in some mental institutes.

Jeez. I can't believe someone actually wrote this in a serious tone..

Here at the escapist, we all know who to blame first. And that is religion.

I'm joking. This is actually a pretty sad story and of course video games will get blamed. But here's a lesson for you. DON'T LEAVE A LOADED SHOTGUN IN REACH OF CHILDREN! Really, how can you be that stupid?

My friends and I have been playing some of the most violent games on the market since we were wee lads, if video games made people kill each other, we would have done it long ago

Funny.. my dad has always kept his gun in plain sight. I never touched it, and my brother never touched it. It's because we see the gun, we know what it does, and we respect it.
Comparatively, I HAVE threatened my brother with the kitchen knife before because I do not respect it as much.

I see that seeing lots of guns in video games will cause you to be "desensitized", in the same sense that I see the kitchen knife everyday and have no respect for it as a weapon. (I don't like to say it is desensitizing. It's more like "misrepresentation" of the purpose of a knife/gun)
However, I'm not sure this argument applies here. These kids are very young, and they shouldn't have access to titles that have realistic guns to begin with. If they do..then something else is also wrong with the picture.

Don't hide the guns. The more you hide something, the more out of control it becomes.

They could have argued about anything and resulted in murder, video games aren't contributing to it.
I agree. They could have been arguing about chores or who's fault it was that their bike broke or some crap and the same thing could have happened.

Nobody blamed the video games at all, why would it bother you? They were arguaing over a videogame, what they are arguing about is perfectly relevant, it shows context and that it wasn't a premeditated act.
Hell we, as a community of gamers, surely aren't so paranoid as to demand nobody ever mentions video games at all?
Very good point, but the headline 'An 11-year-old boy has accidentally killed his nine-year-old brother with a shotgun after an argument about a computer game.' will most likely lead quite a lot of people to think that games are somehow involved in the kid's death... which will give people like that lawyer who blames everything on games (damn it i forgot his name)
a nice open window to jump through and try to ban them...

Nobody cares what jack thompsons says anymore, he has been disbarred.

Anyone who's opinion counts will deal with the games reasonably, as they haven't already tried to blame the videogame it is more likely than not that they were playing something age appropriate, like gran tourismo or mario party. Nobody is trying to claim videogames were anything other than a medium within which an arguament started.
