I haven't bothered with multiplayer yet.
If you have some friends who also own the game, I definitely recommend it. My only complaint is that it's a pain in the ass to get multi-player running.
None of my friends have the game because they don't like the blocky look.
Escapist has a offical (?) server if you wanted to play on that. Its got land and chest protection and other fancy bells and whistles. check it out here:

Personally I like single player because there is no competition for resources.
What's the IP? And is it set to peaceful?

IP is "escapecraft.com" just type that in the server ip box and it will connect you. As for peaceful I guess so but they have spawners for the items normally dropped by monsters where you can trade item for item e.g 3/4 of something get 1 of something for rare items too.

NOTE-They have rules You can see them here: http://www.escapecraft.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=838 They range from code of conduct to land rights and mining etiquette. They are enforced by bans.

It depends what you personally prefer. You can mine and mine and mine till theres no more trees to make into pick handles, but ultimately it gets broing if there's no one to interact with. Other people offer different ideas, you can mine for things quicker, build things quicker amongst other things. And hell, if all get's boring, you can actually fight each an enemy who knows how to dodge and won't explode in your face.

A good game can totally stand alone on its Single Player. And this, is a good game.
I maybe would like to start a multi with a few people. But already existing servers are 90% boring. Well they build some nice stuff. But i dont wanna go to a virtual museum. I want to explore caves and build my fortress.

I'd play online with a few people if I could host a server myself but as of now I just prefer SP. Plus building is a lot easier without griefers.
