Two words: Piltdown Man.

Time will tell.
One sentence: Piltdown Man's true nature was revealed by the very men that creationists try to discredit with it.
One confused rebuttal: I don't think you got what I was driving at there.

Won't matter - no matter how many times they find a link (and they have), creationists just retort that "you haven't found EVERY link!". It won't convince a single creationist of anything since they've already decided that evolution isn't true. It's a moving goal-post - every time scientists answer a creationist argument, they just make up a new one or move the goal post back. Creationists said there was never an instance of an organism changing due to environmental pressure. When scientists proved that bacteria could respond to selection, the creationists just moved the goal further back. Creationists said there was never a single fossil that showed a link between species - when scientists found real missing links, the creationists just retorted "nyah, nyah, you haven't found EVERY link!".

I don't care to debate with creationists anymore. At least, not the committed ones. They're brainwashed to believe whatever their pastor tells them. Few, if any, have any real backgrounds in genetics or biology. They don't know the science, yet they feel capable of criticising it. That shows the mindset they have - they're ignorant and proud of it, and they feel as if their ignorance trumps knowledge.

Until creationists actually get a proper education (and no, reading Answers in Genesis is not a proper education) or are WILLING to REALLY listen to the arguments of evolutionary biologists, there's no point in debating them. They're not listening to you, they never will.

Can anyone explain this missing link business to me; I have been trying to understand what it means exactly but I can not figure it out. Is it a genetics thing, or something entirely different? Am I dense for not understanding what people mean when they refer to it?

It's one more species in the chain between the common ancestor shared between Humanity and apes and humans

Enlighten me then. Given the context, my guess about your drive would be that Australopithecus sediba is directly analagous, both in the claim of being a missing link and in being a forgery like Piltdown man was revealed to be. The latter detail in particular has long been used by creationists as a way to discredit scientists in general (due to high precident I assumed this was part of the intent, if this is not the case then I apologize) despite the fact that it was scientists who revealed Piltdown's nature as a hoax. Of course, it's also possible that you were simply comparing the media hype around the two of them.

Oh, I had a massively overcomplicated idea of what it was in my own mind. Thank you!

Not a big deal, every so often there's a new 'missing link' story. It's really blown out of proportion in terms of importance.

It's neat how old it is, but I just hope people don't start getting excited and claim this is the thing that 'proves' evolution.
Does sound like your not convinced evolution is fact yet. and the reason its 'missing link' all the time is because scientists say that its the earliest ancestor for mankind which means it gets nearer and nearer to a common ancestor with apes, which means all the papers overhype with the missing link thing....

Btw if you need proof of evolution take any virus or bacteria and youll see evolution happen in real time due to them adapting to drugs and becoming resistant strains.
I thought italics would be enough.
No I thought it was unclear which side of the fence you're on, could be either way. Wouldn't have bothered commenting if you hadn't made the snooty "pay closer attention" comment. Pay closer attention to ambiguous comments? No thanks.

All the same I agree with you, and the people who are arguing with you to prove your point lol. Plenty of evidence to support evolution already. Yet finding these missing links gives scientists something to do, and keeps them off the streets, making us all safer, so yay! ;)

God bless the scientists.

It was that second thing, and how it ultimately wound up being much less than everyone thought it was. But, since I'm nothing if not open-minded, I left an expression of doubt there; while I remain doubtful that they have finally found the end-all-be-all of evolution after so long spent searching (especially since this is hardly the first time), I'll accept it after thorough examination by the greater scientific community.

Also, for future reference, I'd appreciate if you would no longer associate me with the most mind-bogglingly idiotic supposition in the world.

Creationists really are something else.

I was raised in the Church and fully believe in evolution. You'd have to be an idiot not to.

Nowhere in the bible does it say that evolution doesn't exist. The bible is full of symbology, and is not meant to be taken literally. It's also full of plot-holes. Seriously, how did man reproduce if the only two humans were Adam and Eve, who only had two sons and one killed the other? I seriously doubt Cain had kids with Eve.

As for the fossil story, this is really cool. It's a creature that has elements of both man and ape. It would be interesting to see one in person. I wonder how clever they are.

Now getting back to the creationism thing; who's to say that God didn't guide evolution? It's pretty much a miracle that humans turned out the way we did instead of just another beast.

The snootie-ness was because of the immediate seemingly aggressive response from the person I was snooty towards.

Well then you have my apologies for my misreading of your statement. Sorry about that.

There are dozenssss of "missing links"..thats like saying find the missing link between house cats and Saber tooth tigers. Theres' hundreds of species in between and new ones pop up based on environment, thats evolution. Adapting to CURRENT needs, not forwards or backwards but CURRENT needs.

Taylor Lautner should really get his publicist to release some better head shots.
