It's just that they're just looking to sell copies solely based on the name and thus don't put any actual effort into making the game itself good. There are exceptions of course, like the whole Batman Arkham series and games that take after it, but for the most part the entire IP could be burned to the ground and these people don't give a crap so long as they make a little quick cash.
And yet Ultimate Alliance 3 is a better Avengers, and Guardians of the Galaxy game than either of the two Squeenix/CD products. With a smaller budget to boot!

The problem is the same problem that has befallen almost every licensed game ever: The developers and publishers don't care. It's not that it's difficult in the least, any more difficult than it is to make a video game in general anyway. Apparently LJN was infamous for their shitty licensed game back in the 8 bit era, or so the AVGN loves to dunk on them for anyway. I waa around for that era but luckily I missed a lot of the bad games.

LJN was a really bad publisher for those games. They didn't actually make the games, they just published them. Believe it or not, the guilty parties for actually making the games? Most notorious offenders were Atlus and Rare. Yes, the same Atlus who makes Persona. Yes, the same Rare who made Donkey Kong Country.

You're right. For some reason I was conflating LJN and the devs.

No-one pointed out the obvious elephant in the room?

The last Square Enix published Marvel game was Marvel's Avengers which was pretty bad from most accounts and people were reluctant to risk buying the game in case it was another seeming cash grab Marvel game live service pile of bullshit.

Square Enix may not be happy with sales but I bet they will be when they find the game keeps on selling and has a longer sales tale and keeps making them money over time because it's a pretty good game from everything I've heard.

It's Square Enix. I don't think they'd be satiated unless it sold 10 million copies.
Plus DLC totally (not) cut from the game + the movie explaining half the story + the anime also explaining story and character beats + Cup Noodle ads in game.

SQUARE ENIX: BuT GaMeS DoNt MaKe EnOuGh PrOfIt!
