Just look at his lines!

You boys think you're crazy, huh? Jumping out of airplanes... flying like birds? (chuckles) That is crazy! I like this phone. This is a nice fucking phone. So, what do we have here? Grant... (whistles) and Jason... from California, huh? Well, I hope your mama and papa really, really love you, cause you two white boys look expensive! And that's good because I like expensive things... (Grant mumbles) I'm sorry, what did you say? What did you say? Do you want me to slice you open like I did to your friend? SHUT THE FUCK UP! Okay? I'm the one with the fucking dick! Look at me, look me in the fucking eye. HEY! YOU FUCK! Look me in the eye. You're my *****. I rule this fucking kingdom. Shut the fuck up... or you will die. (Jason mumbles too) What is it, Jason? Jason, what is it? Why aren't you laughing now like you did back there? What, is this not fun any more? Have I failed to entertain you? You see, thing is, up there, you thought you had a chance. Waaaay, up in the fucking skies, you thought you had your finger on the pussy trigger. But hermano, down here... down here? (beat) You hit the ground.

Did I ever tell you what the definition of insanity is? Insanity is doing the exact same fucking thing over and over again expecting shit to change. That. Is. Crazy. The first time somebody told me that, I dunno, I thought they were bullshitting me. So, boom, I shot him. The thing is... he was right. And then I started seeing, everywhere I looked, everywhere I looked all these fucking pricks, everywhere I looked, doing the exact same fucking thing. Over, and over, and over, and over again thinking, "This time is gonna be different. No, no, no please... this time is gonna be different." I'm sorry, I don't like the way... (punches crate aside violently) ...you are looking at me. Okay, do you have a fucking problem in your head? Do you think I am bullshitting you, do you think I am lying? Fuck you! Okay? FUCK. YOU. (beat) It's okay, man. I'm gonna chill, hermano. I'm gonna chill. The thing is... all right? The thing is I killed you once already, and it's not like I am fucking crazy. It's okay. (beat) It's like water under the bridge. Did I ever tell you the definition of insanity?

"Take me into your heart. Accept me as your savior. Nail me to the fucking cross and let me be REBORN!"

Are you enjoying my sister?s company? Huh? She?s gonna make a warrior out of you? You are so fucked, Jason. C'mon pull the triger. C'mon ************! Pull the trigger! Let's go, shoot me!

Whoever wrote this character needs to get a job at another story focused video game company. Like Ken Levine's new project or something.

Pretty much any crazy, insane or entertaining villain. I loved Terumi in Blazblue more than nearly any of the other characters. As already mentioned and sure to be mentioned again Vaas was a great villain, also handsome Jack from Borderlands 2.

Villains are usually much more interesting then heroes and sometimes I like to root for them, especially if the "hero" is a boring or annoying character of if the villain actually has some good ideas and a good goal in mind.

Avatar(the alien one) was a great example of me liking the villains more simply because I disliked the hero's. Although my favourite is when you have a show where the protagonist is someone who would usually be considered an antagonist, where your not sure if he is a good guy at all. This I why I really like Hellsing, Code geass and am currently enjoying Dexter.

Bill "the Butcher" Cutting from Gangs of New York. Granted, I don't think Amsterdam Vallon was a bad lead character, but if you give Daniel Day-Lewis a role he'll steal the entire movie and run away with it.

Hazama in BlazBlue is the hands down best thing in the game. Ragna as the main character is boring as hell and Noel while being better is still a total coward. Every line out of Hazama's evil as fuck mouth is totally brilliant and his outfit is awesome.

"I'm really not the fighting kind of guy y'know?"

I do wish Mu-12 had been given more screen time and characterisation aside from simply being the final boss though. Apparently this is going to destroy the entire world singlehandedly

I would love to know how game, I really would and I even main Mu-12. There's something about her hatred of everything and everyone including her own existence which is really interesting to me but within the plot Mu as a character isn't as important as getting Mu-12 back into Noel Vermillion (for some reason, Mu is fuckin' rad. Fuck Noel) so no she's just the ridiculous fanservice character with nothing to back her up.

I tend to like most antagonists more than their counterpart protagonists. Not sure why really, I just find them more interesting most of the time.

I happen to have a really good specific example of this now though, because I've been reading the Three Kingdoms (the old Chinese story that the Dynasty Warriors and Romance of The Three Kingdoms games are based on), and holy shit, Lui Bei is a psychopath.

At one point his son is rescued by one of his generals, so he throws his own baby child to the ground, and cries that it nearly cost him one of his great warriors. At another point he eats someone's wife, then gets them a promotion for willingly feeding her to him. This guy is genuinely supposed to be the one the audience roots for, it's insane. He also constantly fails at everything he does, and the only reason he gets anywhere is that the greatest warrior in the story and the greatest strategist just happen to join him over anyone else. His only positive quality as far as I can tell is that he is distantly related to the current emperor.

Cao Cao on the other hand rises from practically nothing to being the most powerful man in China purely through the power of his cunning and ambition. He respects talent and loyalty, and constantly rewards his skilled followers and heeds their counsel. He's a far more interesting character to me, and a far more moral one (at least compared to Lui Bei).

Good post! For all their BENEVOLENCE! Shu never came off as better then Cao Cao. They just kept screaming they where. DW 7 played with that rather well in the Jin story. I take it your pleased with the later DW stories then? Cao Cao is depicted as much more noble there.

In Assassins creed III i much preferred Haythen to Connor. Not only does Haythen have much better arguments to back up his ideology but he's such a charming man. I grew really fond of him and always looked forward to meeting him again. Conner on the other hand is frequently unfriendly to people who don't deserve such a treatment and he can hardly do anything more then stammer ''B-but freedom!'' against the Templar's.

I don't dislike Pit from kid Icarus at all, he's my favorite hero from Nintendo but Hades is just so much more awesome.

Haha you are right, but you have to admit Mr. DiCaprio managed to kept up pretty good.

I would mention "Handsome Jack" from Borderlands 2, he was pretty awesome and definatly a cooler character than any of the playercharacters.

I would have to go with Valkyria Chronicles. First of all, I particularly hated virtually all of the protagonists. They really were a boring bunch of whiny brats.

Also, Selvaria was easily the best character in the game. Honestly, when I first saw her in game, I wondered why I was stuck playing as some retarded children instead of a super powerful bad ass.

Amon. Just Amon.

Seriously, how awesome is this guy?! He's cold, skillful, mysterious, has somewhat noble and relatable cause and always has a plan. You can never see what this guy has in mind and at the same time he's not a random, chaotic, screaming moron, that many villains try to be lately. And he's voiced by Steven Blum. This guy would overshadow Aang if he were in Legend of Aang. The fact that he's opposed by Korra, only contrasts his awesomeness.

I have quite a few:
Eliphas the Inheritor and Azariah Kyras from Warhammer 40k Dawn of War 2 Retribution. Their lines make the game for me.

Jon Irenicus from Baldur's Gate 2 Shadow of Amn. David Warner nailed that character perfectly.

Relius Clover and Terumi from Blazblue. Relius for the horrifyingly subtle mad scientist vibe, Terumi for reasons that have been stated by others in the thread.

Handsome Jack from Borderlands 2. Same reasons as Terumi.

The Lich from Adventure Time. The fact he's voiced by Ron Pearlman helps a lot. His last monologue before being "killed" puts it best. "You are alone, child. There is only darkness for you, and only death for your people. These ancients are only the beginning. I will command a great and terrible army. We will sail to a billion worlds. We will sail until every light has been extinguished. You are strong, child. But I am beyond strength. I am the end. And I have come for you, Finn."

Vincent Volaju and by extension Vicious from Cowboy Bebop. Despite nihilistic villains being rather cut and dry in any form of fiction; these two both terrify me to no end. Vicious for being something akin to a yandere and Vincent for his near Terminator like methodical calm.

Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. His affable dialogue, terrifying stature, genre savvy, and his somewhat muffled dialogue makes me love this guy. "Then, when it is done, and Gotham is ashes... then you have my permission to die."

Most Nintendo villains of old (Bowser, Ganon, Ridley). Queen Myrrah from Gears of War (I so hoped she'd kill all of them. A shame Karen Traviss wrote her into a pantomime villain with Gears 3. x_x). Lots of Mass Effect villains, from Saren Arterius to Tela Vasir. Chancellor Sopot from Red Faction 2 for THAT epic speech. Lots of Fire Emblem villains from Ephidel to Ashera. Albert Wesker from Resident Evil. Grigori from Dragon's Dogma. Juri, M Bison, Vega, Sagat and Seth from Street Fighter. Kane from Command & Conquer (ALL HAIL THE PROPHET!!!). Mr Blonde from Perfect Dark. Andrew Ryan from Bioshock. DX:HR's main villains (The Tyrant Mercs & Darrow).

I mean, I could go on and on, but the general rule is Villains >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Heroes.

I'm English and I almost always root for the villain. Rooting for heroes is a more American phenomenon.

Some of us walk a darker path.

Solidus Snake is the easy answer here, since MGS2 Raiden was fuck-awful. It also helps that Solidus' motivations were actually almost noble.

As a MASSIVE fanboy for Guilty Gear and, By extension, Blazblue, I love Daisuke Ishiwatari's designs (At least I think he did the designs for Blazblue too...) because they're over the top and ridiculous - Except for Hazama. And Hazama is rad and don'tneedya'llanimehair or super demon arms to get his sweet kicks ... Fedoras give him all power he needs!

And this extends to more fighting games, Street fighter coming first to my mind. Bison, Akuma and Seth make much more interesting characters over Ryu and Ken.
I mean, Fucking christ, One of the Baddies uses PSYCHOPOWER and has a perma-smile. What's not to love

TL:DR Hazama, Street Fighter Baddies.

Vaas from Far Cry 3. Guy was very a very interesting character and very well acted, intimidating as well. Buck was also a great antagonist in that game. Now the protagonist is about as lame as you can get - a poorly acted college fratboy not unlike the pricks you often see in slasher movies. There's really no contest to who's better here.

Somewhat unrelated to the main topic;

We had a conversation about Jason back when we still had a Gamestop in my town, when a couple of the locals frequenting the store talked about Jason as a character, and I commented that the only thing missing from his characterization was a scene where you've torched a compound, and then the narrator chimes in that:

"As Jason stood surround by blood and fire, with the world crumbling around him, he looked to the heavens and laughed; because finally, he realized... He had finally come home."

And on topic: Madara Uchiha.

No, I don't think he's a good character, I actually think he's complete shit... but I hate the rest of cast and the series as a whole so much by now that anyone who's trying to kill them automatically becomes my favorite character.

The Joker. Now, don't get me wrong, Vaas Montenegro from Far Cry 3 is one of the greatest things to ever happen to fiction ever, but nothing beats the original psycho.
