A technocracy has always sounded good, dude. ALWAYS. If we geeks ruled the world, there would probably be fewer wars and much more focus on development of non-military technology. As it is, yeah, you're gonna find idiots like that all over the place.
Why do you think I always play as the University in Alpha Centauri :) Might makes right, but only technological might does it the best! Planetary conquest is one thing, planetary conquest while achieving total equilibrium with an alien ecosystem and solving all issues of pollution and poverty is another entirely :)

In all seriousness, these people are just small minds who know they'll never be taken seriously by anyone of any prominence in the world, and are using the ability to post comments to air their stupidity to the whole universe while being able to remain anonymous. It's sad really. An area that could be used for informed debate is instead demonstrating the sheer abundance of stupidity there is in humanity today.

But you have to give credit to your classmates that they at least know that volcanos release CFC's. Historys worst natural disaster made approx 95 % of Earth's life die out and that was after a global warming created by volcanos.

(But after like EVERY volcano on earth had hurled out CFC's for days)

It sounds like the environmental version of the pratlings of one of those morons you see in offices who know all the business buzz words and not what any of them actually mean.

It's great that you put it here.

How dare people with no training or experience in a field make judgements in a way that the accused cannot respond to?

Yes, I very much hate when people believe that their opinions are absolute truth and go around talking about how incorrect others are in a way that the so-called "Anti-Intellectuals" cannot defend themselves.

At least I have the common decency to tell everyone that I'm an asshole and a douchebag BEFORE mocking their opinions and deriding them as ignorance or simply attributing their statements to assinine behaviour.

As I very much doubt the intellect of anyone who sees no irony in the subject, I take this moment to tell you that the above is sarcasm as a result of being pissed that the OP holds a very similar position with the main difference being the viewpoint.

People have different opinions. The world is a complex place. Just because someone says something on the internet does not mean they are right, or that they are wrong.

I would also like to take this moment to assure everyone that I in no way believe volcanoes produce CFC's, no matter what other toxic gasses they may release.

And remember, ladies and gentlemen, that a scientist's wet dream are healty identical octuplets.

Unfortunately, you're being a massive hypocrite OP.

Being a scientist myself, and refusing to believe what 3 scientists say is true, and 497 say is false (this is actually how 'global warming' began - 3 members from a 500 member think tank did a study on how CO[sub]2[/sub] affects the climate. Unfortunately they were so sure of their findings that the wrote up a paper about it before seeking the approval of the other 497 members, whom all voted unanimously that, at the very least, more research was needed. Unfortunately, the media got their hands on it, and blew it all to hell.) I did some experimentation on global warming.

It's pretty simple, just test the 'greenhouse gas theory'.

Guess what?

It's wrong.

If you take two thermometers, put one in the sun, and one right beside the other, but under a piece of glass (hoisted high enough to allow air flow, of course - if you stop air circulating on one and not the other, then your experiment is useless), the one under the glass will always be colder.

There are many other factors which contribute to climate change actually shifting us towards an ice age, all easily proven through physics, mathematics, or chemistry.

If you want, I can explain why greenhouses are warmer than outside, but for now, it's irrelevant.

That is not to say that we should just ignore the environment, just that following the bandwagon of people you think are smart is just as anti-intellectual as disagreeing blindly, if not more-so.

You're talking about the Permian Extintion, prehistory's worst natural disaster. That was caused by no ordinary volcanoes but the Siberian Traps, which was a lava field that covered all of Siberia. And as to your assertion about CFCs and volcanoes, unless somebody proves me otherwise, I'm afraid you're, hmm, let's see, what's the word... WRONG!

It seems to me we don't have a full grasp of the complexities of our planet. Yeah I think it's overplayed by enviornmentalists how much of a crysis we are actually facing. Thing is these same scientests have been singing the doom by gloom song for quite a while now and it's getting old and unbeleivable. At best we have a 60% what the weather will be like tomorrow morning, I hardly think predicting such a catastropic Earth shattering event at such a further flung date is even possible with any certainty. Not that I doubt such a cataclysm is possible, nor should we not try to do what we can to prevent such things and improve our technologies for cleaner means of getting things done.

Point is those scientests are human and still fallible.

That is NOT how global warming works! There are so many things wrong with you're 'experiment,' that I hardly know where to begin.

1. The greenhouse effect actually does not exactly work like a greenhouse. A greenhouse allows sunlight to heat up the air inside while preventing said air to dissipate through the rest of the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases absorb thermal radiation radiated from the Earth's surface after the surface absorbs sunlight, dissipating the radiation that otherwise would have gone back up into space into the atmosphere as heat, warming the Earth.

2. I bet both thermometers were still in the open air, just with one with a plate of glass over it. Air from the outside is circulating around the air around the thermometer, contaminating what is supposed to be a closed system.

3. The reason the thermometer under the glass is colder is because the glass is reflecting sunlight away from the thermometer. Greenhouse gases, however, do not reflect.

And are you suggesting the entire theory of greenhouse gases? It's what's keeping our planet from being like Mars and is why Venus is hot enough to melt lead.

I don't know what kind of scientist you are, but you are CLEARLY no climatologist.

P.S. I have a right to my goddamn opinion too, you know.

Y'know, it's times like these a technocracy ran by scientists looks pretty good.
Yo dawg, the jury's still out on whether or not Global Warming is an actual occurrence. If I had to guess, I'd say there's likely heaps of evidence supporting both sides, too.

So I wouldn't bash Republicans simply for the fact that they disagree with Al Gore. I'm a Republican myself, and am undecided on the issue.

Guess I shoulda elaborated. It isn't about the problem of Earth Warming/cooling anymore. Its about whether to not scientists should waste time on it. Thats why people deny it completely, people don't judge you based on what you do for the environment. They judge you for what you believe should be done, lol who recycles. I do but I don't go wearing a 'I recycle" button.

Oh and I believe in Global Warming but I'm just a kid so all I can do for now is grow up and try to make life enjoyable for other people, since I think Fun and happiness is the meaning of live lessthan3

Then I guess these "anti"-intellectuals have a right to say that Global Warming is overrated. In the world of sience there is a lot of disagreement, so who's to say who's right or wrong?

That's the problem. This is (two) A person, and yet they're still stupid. I just don't get the reasoning of these people. What could we possibly do to make people trust scientists again? Wait, that's it!

Fuck yeah!
Bill Nye was my childhood hero (and still is my hero), we need more people like him to give science an appealing appearence to the anti-science crowd.

They're stating an opinion. They don't need to be so rude about it, but they have the right to say it.

Anti-intellectualism and idiots like the guys in that article, they will always be around as long as people feel uncomfortable saying "You're way more knowledgeable about this than I am and I support your opinion" people like to puff themselves up and jump into an argument, whether they know it or not, I know, I've seen plenty of examples of that on this site.

I never mentioned Republicans. I mean, other people have, but not me. I simply hate the average asshole who thinks he knows more about science than actual scientists because of his overinflated ego. As to global warming, eh, you seem reasonable enough to figure it out on your own.
