Alright, I'm very upset with Microsoft. I have never opted-in to their God-damned Cloud bullshit on my Xbox, nor have I ever signed into Xbox Live on any Xbox other than my own, yet someone has still compromised my profile, stolen 20 dollars worth of Points, and, for some reason, played Fifa 12 on my profile.

Anyone inclined to do so, do not buy either Sony or Microsoft Video Game systems, they clearly are incapable of protecting your information.

I'm not whining, just to nip that in the bud. I'm telling the Escapist that my profile has been compromised, at no fault of my own. This means the negligence lies with them, and coupled with Sony's horrendous breach, I will never again take business to either company, and I encourage you to do the same.

Nope. Wired cable from a regional company. It's not even a big Canadian one like Rogers.

Like I said, I'm just putting this here because I, as a former customer of Microsoft, wanted to draw attention to how they can totally drop the ball.

I think he meant wireless set up in the house. They're often pretty trivial to compromise.

That's what I meant. Aside from the connections that come from major telecom companies (AT&T's wireless signal, for example), which we're not with, there's no wireless connection in the house.

Same thing happened to me. Except in my case $360 of points were stolen, and strangely enough, Fifa '12 was also played on my account. Weird. Anyway, drop Microsoft a line. I did, and not only was all my money refunded, I got a voucher for a free month of Xbox Live Gold. They were friendly and helpful about it too. I still don't know how my account was compromised, though. I've never played online. Ever.

I've been hacked too, even though I almost never play my Xbox. Fifa was also played on my account.

Microsoft?s support was terrible; they refunded me the money, but the hacker setup a hotmail account and removed my email address. Meaning I had to login to the account using a randomly generated email. After looking online and phoning support I am informed that the only way to change my email address back is to initiate an account investigation which would take 30 days.

30 days later i am informed that there is no evidence my account was hacked (even though they admitted it was and refunded me the money) and that they won't make any changes to the account.

To revert my email back to the old one I simply decided to transfer the gamertag to a new Windows Live account, but wait! My email address is currently in use - I have to wait a YEAR! for it to drop out of their system, so I am using a temp email address for another 10 months or so before I can recreate my Windows account (again) with the right email.

Shambles!

Sorry to hear of everyone's troubles, a while back there was a rash of account hijacks all relating to Fifa (was the 2011 version I guess but I may be wrong) - the majority of people were phished by entering their details into a website that illegitimately offered some form of Fifa's in game money. However, there have been some pretty convincing claims from others that they were not phished yet had their account hijacked... the one thing in common? Fifa.

So giving everyone here the benefit of the doubt, I'd say the problem lies with EA/Fifa rather than Microsoft as one imagines the hijacks would be more common if Microsoft themselves were compromised and not limited to just one game either.

Rainmaker in particular, you need to call support again and tell them the situation is unacceptable (obviously in a polite but firm manner), ask to speak to a manager too as they should be able to rectify the situation.

Good luck.

Although I still have no idea why Fifa's involved. Anyone got any thoughts?

It doesn't matter what system your on mate, if you have access to the internet and have used it, your at risk. That is the state of things. They occur a lot more frequently then most people seem to realise. In fact, only when something of value is lost do people catch on. For all I know, someone might be sleuthing through my files as I type this... other then a poorly hidden stash of porn, there not going to get much off of me.

Unless they use keyloggers D:

This is actually very very common especially with FIFA12, I get soooooo many messages from people i may have played (anD Beaten muhahaha) on the Ultimate team game mode trying to offer me "duplication" glitches if I send them my best players they'll copy them and send them back. Guys just get rid of the messages it really is a con there is no such thing as a "duplication glitch" or free in game money some idiots who can't be bothered to work for there team just want to scam people and ruin everyone else's game

Yeah I really should phone support again, but I am currently, apathetic to the situation, I've managed to change my address back to one of my two email addresses (just not my 'main' one) and so I don't have an immediate problem. Their service was appalling however.

On the note for Fifa, it was played on my account, but I certainly wasn't phished, I have never played a Fifa game and thus don't need to put my details into any Fifa site.

I'm pretty sure it's related to your EA Online account. I hear EA don't keep account details very secure and people get hacked into and all their Microsoft Points spent on the Ultimate Team mode in Fifa 12. If you report it to Microsoft, you should get your points back after a short investigation on their part. Just be thankful you didn't have a credit card assigned to your account or they would have taken a lot more than a few Microsoft Points!

Well, I think then you should probably quit playing video games all together because Nintendo isn't any better. They can't even put together an online system that doesn't suck.

Online systems get hacked. Fact of life.

That said, this FIFA exploit has been around for a hack (pun not intended) of a long time. Why hasn't MS fixed it?

And people whine about the PSN being down for a month.

They mean a wireless router, not that your ISP is providing an inherently wireless signal.

Just a quick bit of info for you all. You are better off having a Credit card attached to any on-line payment kinda thing. This is because if something goes wrong you are covered by a fairly robust anti-fraud system/indemnity guaranty, i can't quite recall the name but i think it relates to the consumer credit act. So you may have to do a bit of phoning round the bank but you will most likely get all your money back.

However Debit cards are not covered by this so you will have a lot harder of a time getting any money back, more that likely though you will just be screwed and not get anything back.

***Disclaimer***

Well that's how it works in the UK anyway, I'm not sure about the rest of the world.

Just use microsoft point cards, that's the safest option of all and you dont have to deal with automatical renewals and the difficulty of getting rid off them

Well you posted this to an online forum so don't hate me for saying this but, you shouldn't quit something so easily.

I've been playing games for 19 years and I've never had a problem that wasn't easily fixed (within this context of course). What I'm trying to say is, even if you get hacked thats no reason to get all scared and jump ship. There's a lot of fun games on Xbox and you shouldn't veto an entire host of entertainment available to you, because they aren't infallible or perfectly able to protect your content. If you just gave them a ring I'm sure they would recover your stolen money and help you safeguard your account.

I've been a member of Xbox live for 8 years and never been hacked. That's good evidence that they are NOT incapable of protecting your information. Nothing is impervious to hacking or data theft. NOTHING.

The only things I've had hacked, were 1) my paypal account, years ago, by someone from russia. I didn't have any money in it at the time and I haven't used the service since, because they ban hacked accounts immediately and irrefutably. The other? My World of Warcraft account was hacked when it was inactive. Which actually gave me 3 months of free time once their customer service had recovered my account! What am I trying to say? You got a pole up your bum and you shouldn't place so much blame on the company that failed to 'protect' you. Attacks happen. Malicious people exist. You can't walk through this life without it happening to you at some point.... no point in buckling up and curling into a ball. Get your account and stolen stuff back and don't be afraid.

Yeah that's true, it is the best way.

I wasn't just talking about Live though, i was talking about any on-line payment system i.e. steam, pay-pall, PSN, etc...

Rule of thumb, if you will be getting whatsoever it is you bought right away, e.g. a game from a high street shop, cloths, books whatever. Then use a debit card if you can, you will save money by not having to pay interest. However if you order anything on-line then it's best to use credit due to the extra protection you have if something goes wrong.

To protect against theft, I just try to stay offline in general. I don't really think it's a problem with the developers themselves though, not entirely. We've seen time and again that each time a new anything is introduced it's only a matter of time before said new toy is broken apart or, into by a miscreant of some sort. It's tough luck that the OP has been victimized (and all of us really, if you used PSN back during The Breach) but I'm not going to let a few horrible people ruin the entire experience for me.
