I was wondering what would be a good free anti-virus programe to download and use. My Norton anti-virus runs out soon and I can't say that I would purchase it again (endless popups, constant fake warnings and has on one or two occasions blocked me from playing some games)

Does anyone have any suggestions?

At work (IT support) we use AVG Free [http://free.avg.com/gb-en/homepage]. Works well enough, and doesn't interfere with too many games. Has rarely had issues, only once have I had to unistall it from a client PC, and even that was an instant reinstall, fixing the problem (update issues). One thing I advise is not letting it have its way with your PC in terms of add-ons, such as e-mail scanning and the toolbar. It is a bit intrusive and annoying more than actually disruptive, but I always avoid it.

Oh, and Nortan Anti-virus is a swear to most people in the IT support business. With me, it would constantly come up with an update screen, five minutes into using the PC. Not booting it, because then I could just boot it about five minutes before I plan on using it. No, usually after getting a short way into a game

Ping

The game has a fit and up pops Norton Anti-user
And some games have issues with minimising them then going back

Anyway, good luck with whatever you choose!

Don't bother with AVG. It use to be good, but over the years it's turned to crap, ESPECIALLY the free version. Norton has good detection rate but eats up too much computer RAM on your average household PC and if it goes wrong, it goes VERY WRONG. If your going free I recommend Avast! or if your copy of Windows is legit to use "Microsoft Security Essentials".

If you plan to buy an Anti Virus/Internet Security in the neer future, I'd recommend Kaspersky or Trend Micro, If you're using an old machine, Kaspersky's the better choice as it barely uses RAM and designed to do so.

Also, when you un-install Norton, make sure to run the "Norton Removal Tool" (You can download it from their site) to double check its all gone. Sometimes it might leave behind a bit of its program and later can cause hassles. (Happened alot at my job)

I am using Avira and have had no complaints so far. It is free and downloadable.

I also use Spybot S&D and Malwarebye's along with Firefox with Adblock and noscript addon to browse the Internet to protect myself as a few extras.

Good question! It took me years of testing before I found the best free one that worked for me.

Avira AntiVir is what I ended up with. It is nearly as powerful as AVG, losing by only a few percentage points in finding rare virus's. It has less false positives then it's contemporaries and uses the least amount of system resources. It is also easy to use and has a great user interface.

I have been using it for the past 2 or 3 years and have never had an infection with it, though I?ve had a few slip through AVG despite it technically being a little better at finding viruses.

AntiVir will give you a daily pop up advertisement on your desk top, but it's only ever advertising the paid version of the program, and it closes with no fuss. I have no problem seeing them advertise to me for such a solid piece of free software.

I?d recommend starting there, and if it does not work out for you try AVG. If that does not work out for you buy one (not Norton!), none of the other free antivirus?s are worth your time.

I use malwarebytes anti-malware. It's free and it's removed things off of my computer for me that no other program could. It's also much less bloated than AVG or McAfee.

I use that for virus scanning rather than protection. I use AVG for defence, and then kill anything already on the inside with MB A-M

You just have to know where to get your pr0nz from. Of course, seeing as how I'm pr0nz hunting with a linux live-cd, I kind of cheat. I run the pr0nz to see what happens, and if it doesn't try to do anything stupid, I call it good enough.

Having a virus try to attack a fake OS is really funny to watch, plus it can help fix stuff.

I used to run the exact same setup with free AVG in portugese. :p my computer got a bit too old after a while though. I think I need to go back and upgrade the poor machine.

You could just stream it and not deal with any viruses at all.

Or, you know, get a girlfriend.

I currently use the anti virus, Mac OS X Snow Leopard. It works brilliantly so far.
Another good anti virus is to not look at porn. That one is quite effective as well.
Finally, not downloading illegal things tends to help too.

On a serious note. People say Kaspersky works great. It's got a trial version.
Otherwise, I always used AVG free on windows.

Kaspersky. It's actually the best out there and I tested a lot of them. AVG once deleted a .dll without even a pop-up. Had to format.

All anti-viruses have their weaknesses and Kasp is not without them (as in wanting to delete a code that I wrote...) but it's still the best on the current market.

It has a month of free trial so you can test it. After that it stops updating but will still protect your computer.
