Hey, any of you planning on being Game Designers as a Career? Not just some kid who likes video games and thinks it'd be cool to make them for a living. I'm talking about those of you, like me, actually planning on getting a degree or official education or whatever and actually plan on making video games for a living.

My plan is already in action as I'm currently a Interactive Design and Game Developer Major.

Anyone else?

I've been thinking about it... It's been horrible the way games are being made these days, so I felt it was my duty to try and fix that, of course I would end up working for a company and making the games the way THEY want too.. Which is a major drawback in the grand scheme of things...

If I were to get some education in the field and be able to start my own small company... That would be great!! but doubtful... :(

Yep, I am currently in my second year of Interactive Arts and Science at Brock university. I'm hoping to become a 3d modeler or concept designer.

Yes, I'm already extremely good at it too. I hope to join BioWare, Infinity Ward(hah, yeah right. good luck with that) or maybe Epic Games. Hell, maybe even Valve or GPG.

EDIT: Specifically, I'm aiming to join the audio crew or become a level designer.

I'm planning on taking Game Design at Ai when next semister starts. It'll be nice to have a hand in making games and eventually with more experience gain opportunities to work for a company I love.

My forte is writing, cinematography and directing for film, so no. However, if there are any designers out there who are looking for a writer, cinematographer or creative director (or all three); give me a call.

I would never make my hobby my job. I'll just stick with physics for a future career.
I think you'll find many game companies offering massive salaries for competent game physics programmers. You should look into it, there's really not that many from what I've gathered.

As for me, I'm on my second last unit in my Game Design major (Bachelor of Games and Interactive Entertainment).

A note to potential Game Design Students - IT'S NOT ALL FUN AND GAMES. There is a LOT of theory they expect you to understand and implement, and collectively only 10% or so go from start to finish at university. And if you do go into Game Design, for the love of Gordon Freeman do a few programming electives. You WILL be expected to script a bit, no relying completely on codemonkeys to get your ideas working. By all means, befriend/kidnap a programmer, but don't get complacent.

I plan on writing, and video games are certainly something I've considered writing for. However, I see myself more going into writing for film or television than for videogames, as I want to be a comedy writer and most games have very little focus on comedy.

I used to think I'd be good at making games when I was little, but now that the 3D platformer craze died, I'm not so sure. If the genre ever has a major revamp though, then maybe.

....I meant the science my point was I wasn't going to make my hobby of gaming into my career. You know physics the science? Yeah, good.
Oh so you're going to do useless things like quantum physics instead of contributing to mankind by refining Havok? Come now...

You know what I learned? No matter how good the Game Designer is, if the Producer is an asshole, your game is going down the drain. And if the Executive producer doesn't raise flags, nobody will.

So, instead, become a Producer, and hire a good Game Designer.

I don't know... I'm currently heading fairly certainly towards a computer science/software engineer sort of career, but I don't know if that would ever lead to game design.
