Battleon. Great game, and you don't have to pay a penny. Still, there are a lot of things to be gained for cracking open your wallet, but once again, you don't have to.
Battleon is soooo 2005. I played that game back in Primary school, it was all the rage back then. Now it's all about COD (mumbles of into a rant about COD and other FPS')

Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine [megaten.aeriagames.com]. It's the only MMO I've found where the GMs do dungeon runs with the players as official events. The community is pretty awesome, too. Whatever you do, you'll likely build your character more than once as it's a classless stat and skill based system.

League of Legends
Dynasty Warriors Online
Trickster Online

All taken from what's installed on my computer right now. If you really like League of Legends, and have a feel for the game, message me and I can give you a trial key for Heroes of Newerth, which I find is a more polished version of DotA.

EDIT: Oh! I forgot some Freeware games that are a must. Iji and and Cavestory, both are fun and actually fairly lengthy.

Well on April 12th World of Tanks goes live. And its NOTHING like World of Warcraft, so you don't need to worry. Its free to play with microtransactions. But otherwise quite well done.
I can recommend this. Was good fun this evening being back in the small tanks again after the beta.

Company of Heroes Online was good, and then it closed down, but not before early players (me included) got Company of Heroes Gold Edition for $5.

I guess I'll go with Sauerbraten. Find it on sauerbraten.org
It's like Quake, open source, with good graphics, that don't need an ultrapowerful computer, runs on damn near anything, and if you want to go into game design, also has a very easy to use ingame level editor. And it's fun.

I would say League of Legends but the goddamn servers are down........join the game when season two comes out. Season one is at an end and they're doing championships right now.

Not free but theres a few good indie games on Steam for sale right now, including Killing Floor. Dungeon Defenders is coming out next month, its basically tower defense with a hero. Cartoony graphics but the ipad version has gotten some good reviews. Again that one won't be free but will likely be cheap. I'm not really sure whats good for free, I tend to either play the AAA games when I have some money or play through the stockpiles I get during Steam sales.

The only one that I have enjoyed recently is nestalgia (mispelled on purpose). Please do not recommend W.O.W. clones. I have no problems with rpgs, mmos, mmorpgs, or even single player games. What have you played that you recommend?
Global Agenda if you're the PvP type (warning: Requires huge E-peen)

LOTRO if you're the PvE type (far from a WoW clone, much more for the decent social audience)

Dungeons & Dragons Online, probably the best and most unique FTP MMO on the market today.

Yes, it's the fictional game from Tron. No, it actually doesn't suck.

Dynasty Warriors Online
Oh my god.
This is a thing.
This is an ACTUAL thing.

OT: Echo Bazaar is a good one; it has gained a bit of popularity and seems to be doing well. It play it as a nice break from the murder murder murder of normal games.

LotRO, DDO, Maple Story, these are all nice F2P MMOs.

As for single player games, there's a wealth of them out there if you don't mind digging into the past a bit. For example, Zork is free to download, and it's still one of the best games ever. Yahtzee's game series was pretty decent as well.

Failing at that, there's always Good Old Games for cheap stuff... or Steam, of course.

I'm gonna just reiterate what everyone else has been saying: League of Legends.

Just think a newer version of DotA that is more accessible for new players(HoN newer too, but make sure you note the "MORE ACCESSIBLE").

The community is filthy (but honestly, what did you expect from a free PvP), but there are a few decent people there which you can play as a premade team.

Let's see...

Free online shooter:
- Alliance of Valiant Arms
- Operation 7

You've probably noticed this, but Combat Arms isn't on this list. My reasoning for this decision should be obvious.

Free online and quality MMOs:
- Lord of the Rings Online
- Vindictus(more of a hackn'slasher)
- Perfect World

Not much that I can think of, considering that most free online MMOs are generally garbage with the exception of LOTRO because of its beautiful attention to landscape.

Free online mecha:
- Exsteel

Sadly, Exsteel was closed down due to a lack of support and popularity. Although most pay2win, the game was still excellent on its own. It was wonderfully designed and had some good ol' fast paced action to it. Lots of fun if you got the hang of it.
