Voltaire if you're into goth, but want a little cheer as well. He's one of those artists where the bulk of his music puts a devious smirk on the faces of listeners.
The Hush Sound, though on hiatus, is also pretty good for an indie band. I recommend Like Vines as the best album they have. They're that general indie mix of peppy cheer and melancholy, but they're good.
Also on the actual indie note, the Long Winters has a few good ones. Check out The Commander Thinks Aloud, which has the utterly amazing quality of being able to switch to a polar opposite on the emotional spectrum during the song without changing anything in terms of pitch or key. Just five words bring you from a sense of freedom, joy, and accomplishment to crushing dread, while the piano still plugs cheerily away.
Uhm... Some other folks. Check out Renard if you're into techno of pretty much any variety. He is a furry, as a warning, but that just affects cover art and the folks who know his stuff. The music he makes is bloody brilliant and has no allusion to any fuzzy-related contexts.
