Broken Social Scene are pretty amazing so are the Flaming Lips. Why not try the Pixies or Tom Waits

Voltaire if you're into goth, but want a little cheer as well. He's one of those artists where the bulk of his music puts a devious smirk on the faces of listeners.

The Hush Sound, though on hiatus, is also pretty good for an indie band. I recommend Like Vines as the best album they have. They're that general indie mix of peppy cheer and melancholy, but they're good.

Also on the actual indie note, the Long Winters has a few good ones. Check out The Commander Thinks Aloud, which has the utterly amazing quality of being able to switch to a polar opposite on the emotional spectrum during the song without changing anything in terms of pitch or key. Just five words bring you from a sense of freedom, joy, and accomplishment to crushing dread, while the piano still plugs cheerily away.

Uhm... Some other folks. Check out Renard if you're into techno of pretty much any variety. He is a furry, as a warning, but that just affects cover art and the folks who know his stuff. The music he makes is bloody brilliant and has no allusion to any fuzzy-related contexts.

Murder By Death.

Proof that Country doesn't automatically suck.
I second this and add:
Hot Water Music, Archers of Loaf, Guided By Voices, Built to Spill, Ugly Casanova, Crooked Fingers, Jets to Brazil, Wolf Parade, Braid and more--

you can hear many of them and a lot of other stuff on this music thread:

How indie do you want to go?
I've been checking out Scholars, who I saw live, and there were only about 7 people in the room... Including the band. But they were awesome.

Also seem to fit with your tastes.

Also recomend paramore, but they are much more prominently known.

Anyone in the Escapist Music Library. That place has been collecting more kilos of dust than it has members.

I laugh at the people saying Vampire Weekend, Muse, Silversun pickups, and I especially laugh at the guy who said Depeche Mode. Those are barely Indie, and Depeche Mode is about as Indie as Linkin Park or Green Day, except with much worse music.
No one cares.
