I started playing Alpha Protocol after a bit of a hiatus, and i was just wondering, are there any Hardcore 3rd or 1st Person Stealth objective based shooters? I really dig the idea of sneaking around in the shadows and being able to tranquilize enemies or hide in the shadows and initiate a stealth takedown or something like that. I've played the Thief games, and those are more about staying hidden and no real combat. I actually like having to out-flank and out-think my opponents in games. I keep replaying the Stealth Bandit Base infiltration mission on Metro 2033 because its kinda what i'm looking for, I enjoy crawling around and using throwing knives and silent weapons to confuse and terrify my enemies. So long story short, anyone know of any good PC games like that?

Yeah, Escape From Butcher Bay sounds exactly like what you're looking for. It's on Steam, but apparently comes with some goofy DRM that a lot of people are mad about, so tread lightly. I'm assuming you're already familiar with the Deus Ex games, but if not, Human Revolution in particular sounds like what you've described. Stealth in the first DE is a different sort of beast, but still rewarding.

You can definitely play STALKER: Call of Pripyat like that. Imagine Metro 2033 but in a big open outside area. I've taken out bandit camps without them spotting me, although once they do you're in for a big firefight.

It's probably not quite what you're looking for, but it's an excellent game and for the most part you can use stealth to your advantage.

Already mentioned in passing, but Metro 2003 is respectable, if not quite as expansive as STALKER.

EDIT: Metro 2033 not Metro 2003 - that would be a completely different game!

How about a game of prop hunt on Team fortress 2? It takes some great stealth skill not to get caught on it.

Going to go out on a limb here and say that you've probably played the Metal Gear Solid games. If not, then that situation must be remedied because, for the most part, they are exactly the thing you're talking about.

Splinter Cell seems like the obvious choice here. I've heard conviction is more about cover shooting and less about stealthy murder, but the older ones seem to be what you want.

Give Hitman: Blood Money a try. It is the most polished of the Hitman games and can be played as a puzzle game, a stealth game, a stealthy shooter, or a straight out shooter.

I'll throw in another vote for Human Revolution, and then just to feel like I'm adding something I'll also suggest Rainbow Six Vegas 2. Very much like Human Revolution this game can devolve into a cover based shooter if you get spotted, but plan your infiltrations correctly and it's an excellent exercise in stealth and tactics. Yes it's a military shooter so there are a few 'breach and clear' moments but these again are, if planned correctly, over quickly with only a few shots fired by your surprised opponents. Stick the difficulty up to 'realistic' as well, so you can only take maybe two hits before being worm food and you have yourself an amazing stealth/combat simulator. Well worth a look.

Splinter Cell: Conviction is good.
Chaos Theory is cheaper scratch that - every Splinter Cell is $20 on Steam, doesn't need as powerful a rig and I think it might also have a higher emphasis on stealth...at any rate, it doesn't play itself to any degree the way Conviction does. And it definitely doesn't have stupid DRM.

Stealthy Heavy is stealthy (or is that not the stealth-heavy you were looking for?).
