I need to carch up with this on 4oD.

I've heard a lot of people saying they don't have to pay council tax, water rates etc. and live off the grid.
While others have said they do pay these things.

I wanna watch "My Big Fay Gypsie Wedding", too, hoe do they afford all that stuff?!
To be fair living in your own caravan on a piece of waste ground is a lot, lot cheaper than living in a house. Housing is usually the biggest drain on anyones income, sometimes over 50%. Council tax etc depends on the site, how long they stay there, what ameneties they use etc, I wouldn't automatically say that those that don't pay council tax and water rates etc are taking things others have to pay for.

Nice to see plenty of feedback for this, thanks everyone

Yeah, I doubted that I'd find many on a gaming forum, but from what I've seen the Escapist seems to home to all walks of human life so I thought I'd give it a shot!

Anyone else have any experiences with the Gypsy people? Positive or negative?

From what I hear, if there's gypsies around, you lock your house tight, and if you have a gun, you keep it handy.

I live in the US, so I don't have any experience with them. From what I can tell, the closest thing to them that we have hear in the states are Native Americans. And even then the only similarity I can think of is when Native Americans used to travel all around the continent to follow the animals and whatnot.

Except the Qurians have Tali going for them, so that makes up for it. Gyspies don't, ergo, gypsies suck.

Native Americans were nomads though, living off the land and following the herds. Gypsies are parasites who move from town to town stealing everything that isn't nailed down and when they do work, it tends to be of subpar quality. That's not to say they are all like that, but damn, I haven't met any worthwhile ones yet.

When I was at primary school their would be some gypsies or tinkers is what their sometimes called here, then they would leave the next week. The last time I seen them was at paintball where they would ignore the rules but other from that I've had no problem but I have heard the stories on how bad they can be.

Knowing the people where I live, I reckon if the Gypsies started causing trouble people won't take it lightly.

I don't know any gypsies but I'm off the opinion that "the bad ones" have ended up like that people people treat them like shit and they just end up automatically treating everyone else like shit.

I guess I'd call it "angsty teen syndrome"... but this is just a theory, no need to go thinking I have legit experience, here.

They're annoying because they move in our societies with their own rules and only take our rights and not our obligations, that makes them expensive for us taxpayers.

While I'm not a gypsy, I know three types.

1) The Romanian kind that everyone thinks of first (the ones that travel in caravans).
2) The gaudy douchebaggy persian people that come up from Florida during the spring/summer/fall months to the theatre I worked at and would act like pricks, cause prblems then tell us we need to give them money refund AND free tickets or else they wont spend their money at our theatre and stink up the place with their garbage smelling perfume and cologne! *wipes spittle from mouth*
3) the kind that just kinda ramble about.

Anyway, of those two, I know more of the first, cause we have a couple Romanian people at my college that I'm friends with. Of the other type... no, just no. If I ever knew one, I'd shoot them. Its nothing against Persians as the race or group of people, its just the ones that come up to where I work and cause problems. And you can always tell when they're coming, cause they drive these unnecessarily loud and even more unnecessarily gaudy bright neon coloured vehicles and have about twenty of them walk in.

EDIT: Of the third kind, one of my better friends is like that. She's actually pretty cool, and just back packs around the world. I dont think she pays taxes, doesnt have a job or anything that you would need to put a form in, and is basically a ghost. She always sends me postcards from places she's been, and she's been to places like Hawaii and stuff, just through hitchhiking, walking, or sneaking/begging to go aboard things like ships. She's a really good person, so so far as I know, she hasnt caused any real problems and is a joy to have and be around. And doesnt rely on Government funded stuff (she says its hypocritical) so unless she's seriously hurt like, ER stuff or needs an antivenom, she just does it herself or asks and relies on the kindness of others.

Its not like she cant settle either. She just doenst like her parents, but she's had honest offers to be adopted or even in a relationship. She just likes to travel.

I'm romanian. A travelling romanian isn't a gypsies. Rromanians (2xR) as they like to call themselfs are the gypsies.

I have a fair knowledge of both the European Romany and Irish Travellers, since I lived half of my life in Hungary and the other half in Ireland.
In Hungary they are generally despised, and the 'gypsy problem' is played up all the time by our many of our glorious, benevolent radical right-wing groups who like to administer systematic eatings every now and then.
Be that as it may, we have had a lot of our stuff stolen in absentia, mainly because our neighbourhood [not the most upmarket of places to begin with] has in some way or another come a haven for that particular ethic group.
The last time I was back there, I did not leave the house alone and carried little or no cash or valuables. They have also taken to coming to he UK and Ireland to beg in a highly organied manner, as well as rob.

With regard to Ireland's itinerant population, they're generally acknowledged to spread trouble wherever they go.
A lot of bars/hotels flat-out refuse to cater for their weddings and so on because the premises will most likely have violences inflicted on it. They're also behind quite a lot of organised crime, and unfortunately like to harass passers by.

At the same time, though, I have heard from many people that if you make a friend among either of these communities, they will be a friend for life and will have your back no matter what.

It's also worth noting that their behavior, at least to an extent, is a product of poverty and racism. Centuries of being despised and kept from honest will inevitably alter your mindset in favour or stealing and acting like a general scumbag amongst more civilized folks.

Anyway. TL;DR, and also quite badly written. Essentially, these groups have earned their reputations but they are also a product of our intolerance a sheer stupidity.

The two run ins i've had with these folk.
1. Where there was a group of young ones (17-22ish) robbing peoples stuff at knife point as they entered and exited a rave in a field.
2. Irish traveller. Friendly guy but a massive pervert. Said people could have sex with his wife if he could have sex with their girlfriend.

Most of my knowledge on the subject comes from house, so all I really know is that if a gypsy gets a toothpick stuck in their intestines, it's really hard to detect. (I THINK that was the gypsy, but I'm not even positive) I've heard them referred to as Romani before, but this confuses me. Is that reference to the country Romania? I thought they were called Romanians.

Heh, I'm American, but I can't even think of Irish Gypsies without think of Snatch.

It sounds like a similar problem we have with illegal immigrants, especially in the border states. Except Mexicans are generally pretty genial people (unless they are upset about something. Then they get REALLY upset), and tend to be good workers.

OH SNATCH! Forgot about that (Fantastic) movie! Right, between snatch and House, I pretty much know all there is to know about "gyppo's". (I think I learned that from Jeremy Clarkson)
