Welcome to the Escapist! That's all I have to say really, as I don't play an instrument. Wish I did but don't have the patience to learn. All I can do is sing a bit, but unlike sky14kemea I don't practise beyond howling along to things on my playlist - or if I've been asked to sing at a funeral, which hasn't happened more than twice thank goodness. I even asked for feedback in the advice forums here when practising to sing for my granny's funeral.

I approve of this talk of an Escapist band. MAKE IT SO. *sips Earl Grey tea*

I'm an okay singer, and essentially a novice drummer. Nice to play around with the kit on weekends when I come home from college though.

Hello. I've played guitar and bass for about 15 years now. I studied classical guitar in college, and dabble in piano as well. Studying music in college was the best decision I've made with my life and if anyone else is remotely considering it, I'd encourage you to go for it!

Have you managed to make it work 0.o my friend bought one, usually very musically talented guy, but can't make a noise that doesn't resemble a dying bird.

Yeah, I had that problem when I first bought it, kept getting muffled notes and flat notes. It just turned out to be my fingers not getting proper coverage over the holes or that I wasn't blowing hard enough. It wasn't too hard for me to get used to using it though - I already knew how to play a tin whistle and in principle they're both pretty much the same.

I play several instruments: I play violin, viola, tuba and euphonium proficiently and I'm asking for a trombone for Christmas (I don't actually own a brass instrument). I also sing fairly well, I've conducted a few times (and am apparently fairly decent at it) and had a year of piano lessons that didn't take. I mostly play in ensembles: my university symphony orchestra, wind band and string orchestra, but I occasionally tackle some game music on my own. I've recently had a go at the Wind God's Aria from Wind Waker, Moonsong from Cave Story on viola and I arranged Magus' Theme from Chrono Trigger for string quartet.

I play tuba, currently first chair in every school and honor's band I've done.

Of course, getting first chair tuba isn't hard when maybe one other person plays your instrument in that band.

I don't know much about music besides my band experiences. My high school didn't offer music theory, and I don't think I'd want to take it now during college. I listen to a lot of romantic, baroque, and classical music, like Mahler, Sousa, Shostakovitch, Mozart, Williams, and Corelli, so good enough for me.

And I'm going to finish this post by saying that in the low brass, marches are the funnest pieces you can play.

I agree with you completely on the marches. It's so rare for tuba parts to include anything interesting, but I suppose that's what you get for choosing such a low instrument. It does, however, mean that you can play in all kinds of ensembles without being particularly good at playing brass instruments (like myself :p)

Welcome to the forums!

I think I saw a thread like this on Screwattack a few months ago, so I'll post more or less what I did there. Just keep in mind, that OP phrased it as, "Do you play an instrument?"
***** please, an instrument? I play electric guitar, cello, clarinet, ukulele and piano. Got to RCM Grade 8 for cello and piano, Grade 3 theory and I can play thrash and death metal on guitar after a year and a half of playing. Still haven't gotten the hang of sweep picking yet though.

Mastering is tricky, an art unto itself.

Most important rules:

Good mix is most important. Mastering isn't going to fix anything that's broken

Find some songs you like the sound of to A/B with (I use Prodigy's 'Omen', Alanis Morissette 'You Oughta KNow', Nirvana 'On A Plain', Killers 'Mr Brightside' and Foo Fighters 'Bridge Burning'

Keep it quiet - if your mix is too loud, it makes mastering a nightmare

Careful with the limiter - Too much limiting will make your track loud as fuck but squash all the lovely dynamics out. I use the Pro-L by Fab Filter, much prefer it to the Waves L3, has a much more natural sound when it starts compressing Sam Hulick recommended it to me and I've never looked back.
Agreed. Mastering takes a lot of practice and a lot of experimentation. Even then, you'll only know what's best for that one song in the end! I've found that having multiple different plug-in packs is a good idea. For example, AmpliTube makes good equalizing plug-ins, most of the stock with AmpliTube 3 but their pitch/harmonizing/post-gain plug-ins aren't that great.

However, even with all the equalizing plug-ins in the world, I still prefer my good old sound board. Sure, it's basic, but I've had this thing for years and I love it.

Welcome to the Escapist, stay out of the basement, and blame Kross should anything go wrong. It always does. =D

As for me, I'm a violinist and a pianist myself. I prefer piano improvisation as I've gotten some masterful sequences that I probably can't play if I tried to recreate them. =P

I'm a Pianist and a Violinist. I'm also trying to make a small 6 song Indie album, but I'm having trouble doing that...

Keep at it! I'm telling you, you'll become very very good at it.
Also, learn your scales. You have no idea how handy that will be

I am surprised at how many other multi-talented instrumentalists are here, I'm glad to see people playing a diverse group of instruments.

Yeah, the problem is I only have a Normal Piano (Not even a Grand One, just a Normal Piano) and a Standard Violin. I need a Guitarist, Bassist, a Keyboard Player and a Cellist (I sort of found a Drummer but I'm not sure he's actually up to it). It doesn't help that most of my songs are Experimental and Psychedelic, and it also doesn't help that I don't know a lot of Musicians in Real life (I also can't pay anyone anything). Since you can play the Guitar, I could indeed hire you, but I can understand if you don't wanna do it.

Ooh, A Violist! I know your just learning it, but I wonder if you'd like to also help me with my album?

As a side note, I've noticed in the past 5 - 10 years or so the complete over compression of music in general. Wave forms are starting to look like big fat rectangles, at least in the music I generally listen to. I DJ as well and I've ripped music from some old vinyl I have and the waveform is nice and dynamic vs. lots of the newer stuff that is totally overcommpressed and just... I dunno, has a real "wall of sound" slam in your face sound to it. That can be good to a point, but I find it gets really tiring.
Yes indeedy! It's the loudness war:

Well a piano can be digital, acoustic grand, acoustic upright, etc.
I assume yours is upright then.

If I had any of those instruments anymore I would do it for free.
I hope you find some other players, I know from experience that that's definitely a difficult thing to do.
