Now maybe this is a small office problem, I don't know. But you ever get tired of hearing chatter from the hall way. You can't make out the conversation, you aren't even trying to. You can just hear constant chatter coming from down the hall or the next office over. So annoying.

Now maybe it is just me, but it is 5 times more annoying when it is just women talking*, it literally sounds like chickens clucking to me. I don't really understand how 2 women can be bother talking at once to each other.

Discuss

*I mean the women in my office not women in general

I used to work in a cubicle. VERY distracting when you just lean back, close your eyes, and you can hear hundreds upon hundreds of conversations all going at once. Very annoying.

Gosh, you're delightful. I'll be sure to never speak any where near you, lest I sound too much like a chicken.

I've already told you that your voice is pleasant. They ladies have much high voices than you. Also you don't have an southern accent.

I find it more annoying when you can't make out what they're saying. I don't like eavesdropping on other poeples conversations, but it's just noise otherwise. And it's not just women with high voices. It's also men with stupidly deep voices.

Agreed.

@Susan Arendt - to be fair their is one dude here that has this deep monotone voice that is equally as annoying as the high voiced ladies. The thing is, he isn't in the hall talking all day like they are, so I forget about him.

I learned really early in life to filter out garbage I don't want to listen to. Useful, useful skill. When I'm doing something in my cubicle, people could be speaking directly to me, and I won't hear a word they say unless they get my attention first. Helps a lot when something annoying is going on down the hall. I suggest you train this skill.

I work at a radio station and all the sales people just talk about this and that and it does get annoying but being the bastard that I am just to mix things up I have this on my desk http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/warfare/e200/ hehe it was well worth getting but now most of the staff have them too so I kinda replaced one annoyance with another. As for filtering it all out try an MP3 player or something if you can work with music, I can't work and listen to anything with lyrics but that might help you.

See there are two types of people those that can zone out and focus only on what they are doing and people that are observant so nothing gets past them. I'm on the observant side. I have a great memory, I catch things lots of people walk right past, and this skill has come to help me many times over. The draw back is that I get annoyed with to much chatter.

Now, don't get me wrong I see the value in being able to tune people out and just get work done. But as you said it is really annoying to be talking to someone, directly too them, and they don't hear a word because you haven't done a song and dance to get their attention. There was a lady here that we had to do that with.

I hear them over the music.

I work for a Chinese company. Imagine this but not understanding anything they say. Love my job though, means I post here between 9-5

Fortunately I work in the back room at my current job. Only one other person works back here, so it's not a problem. At my last job in a bigger office, there was constant chatter to the point where I needed to use headphones and music to drown it out so I could focus. So I would disagree with your guess that it's only a small office problem. If anything, more people just make the problem worse (especially when there are people constantly coming and going from adjacent cubicles).

I just realised something:
I hate people.

Ummh... meh... I'm gonna go live with monkeys for the rest of my life... heard they give free bananas.

Sort of? I'm a detective at a sheriff's department. We have offices, with cubicles and everything. I only spend about 1/4 of my day there as does pretty much everyone except the Lieutenant and Sergeants, all the time and 1/2 of the time respectively. So there's rarely more than like 6 people at a time.

I will agree that some people just have really annoying voices. I might be one of them... with a deep voice and all.

I'm trying to avoid Dilbert life, really. It's nothing personal. Just that half of the things in that comic have some basis in reality.

What's so wrong with southern accents? I can't help it! (although that's a male southern accent, not a female one)
I know you can't help it, and neither can anyone else. And this is just my opinion, but high pitched southern accents (were are talking about American just incase anyone is confused) are the most annoying accent ever to me. There is a certain whininess in it, even when they aren't whining.
