Any other games with the depth, atmosphere, and story of the original Deus Ex?

I've been into playing Deus Ex lately, and i was blown away by how deep the story was, and how haunting the soundtrack was. So what are some other games that are awesome in similar ways?

Maybe System Shock 2 it has a nice story and is haunting, there is a special sequence in the game that, up to day, still gives me goosebumps.

well i'm actually hoping that more people will post some games, that weren't mainstream and are on here, but if you want a great story, freespace 2 and hours worth of download will leave you not with only one great war, but stories across different universe, fights from fighters to A class freighters. come on pilot get freespace 2 and its amazing hard worked on mods, and trust me on this. Space will leave you breathless.

Ultima Underworld - the influence on every first person action-adventure and RPG since.

System Shock 2 - Along with Deus Ex, the height of FPS/RPG hybrids. Masterpiece of immersion and environmental detail.

Thief 1 and 2 - Highly immersive, and intelligently written stealth games.

The games everyone has recommended so far are right on: System Shock 2 in particular. It's more of a linear experience rather than Deus Ex free-form style, but in terms of atmosphere and style it does everything Deus Ex does and indeed in some ways is even better.

Freespace 2, the old Thief games and Ultima Underworld are all brilliant as well. Neither Thief nor Freespace have the rpg-style mechanics but they make up for it in other ways... well, play em and you'll understand.

Another more recent one I'd recommend is Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. Very much Deus Ex style but with a more tight focus on dialogue and character interaction than anything else. Look it up!

Homeworld. It's a space based 3D RTS. Haunting soundtrack, brilliant atmosphere, incredibly emotional story, it's got them all. I would HIGHLY recommend it.

You dick! I loved that game but have I have no idea where I put he disc years ago since I moved. Now I want to play it, but I don't want to download it. And to buy it....well, I live in New Zealand, so it's nigh-on impossible to find.

To be fair... none. The original Deus Ex is a masterpiece. Some come fairly close, like Thief 2 with it's superb atmosphere, great stealth gamepaly, amazing sound (at least for that time) and cool characters and story. Not really as deep, but at least as immersive. Story-wise you could play some of the old Forgotten Realms games, like Planescape: Torment or Baldur's Gate

Oh yeah, there's also the original Fallout series. Clever, fun to play, really interesting game world.

System Shock 2 is pretty freaky and very clever.

Theif 2 for me is a pretty awesome story, clever stealth bits, and open ended and deep game worlds. You can spend 2 hours in a single map.
