I like Harvest Moon but I haven't played it since Back to Nature and Harvest Moon 64... I would always go for Karen and Popuri.

Oh, how I miss that game.

Hm, I was gonna say DS (Cute), because they're more or less (M)FoMT, but with the AWL characters. The FoMT ones too, if you have the game and a DS with a GBA slot.

But... I really do like Rune Factory 3. It was just really awesome, with the normal farming, the cool characters, the RPG elements, and the forging stuff was pretty cool.

So... DS (Cute) and RF3.

Certainly! Followed it since the SNES.

I remember when I used to see games like it all over anime magazines here in North America. Back when I used to actually buy magazines because I didn't have the internet as a replacement for that(sometimes I regret it, because reading internet people can often be much, much worse than reading from magazine people). I remembered seeing that and going "wow, so much anime video game goodness. I just want to import and play all of the Japanese games. They're like, some kind of digital paradise. I wish I didn't come from a poor family and I could afford it."

Ah, nostalgic times.

I love those games! I try and get all the Harvest Moon games that I can and Rune Factory games. My personal favorite is Harvest Moon: Animal Parade, but Rune Factory 3 is a very close second.

I loved the Harvest Moon game I played on the gamecube, so many hours put into it.

What exactly is Harvest Moon? Could anyone really describe the gameplay for me. It is a series I have always looked at but the 'cuteness' pulled me away. I haven't ever gotten a clear picture painted for me as to what you do in the game. I have gathered it has a farmville-y nature to it but I doubt that alone does it justice.

This thread's alive again.

I've been playing Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town for the past few weeks, and it's pretty fun. The only thing that I don't like is that there isn't much to do--I felt the same with A Wonderful Life.

Harvest Moon 64 and Back to Nature are still the best for me.

Awwww, that's a shame. Cuteness has always been a pull-in for me.

Well, it's a farm sim, basically. You work on the farm, you do things for villagers, you explore around, you ugrade your house, you get married. It's a sandbox. So basically, it's like Oblivion, but with farming.

I'm just curious to see who else here loves Harvest Moon. It seems to be one of those series that every gamer has heard of, yet hardly any have played. I got into the series a couple years ago and I'm still playing them a lot.

Personal favorite is FoMT, btw. Feel free to name yours.

EDIT: Rune Factory counts, too
I have heard of it but never touched a harest moon game . I am very curious about it though, whats the game about? How does it play, what would be the best to start with? Sorry for not answering you question :/

It plays by doing whatever you want to in order to make money and get more stuff.

It's mostly a sandbox. Though most of the stuff you do is around your own farm.

I don't have a specific recommendation on which one to start with, though. Being the retro gamer that I am, I always try to play the first games in a series. Yes, that means I would recommend going OCD and starting with the first one and playing each consecutive game until the most recent. And absorbing all that you

But then again, I'm an OCD person and I get into zones. If I'm going to be into something and have fun, I have to truly be into it. For instance, that's why I haven't played anything Star Wars in forever. Because it's so overwhelming to get into. But I know that if I did, I would probably spend several months on Star Wars fanaticism.

That seems to be something that doesn't apply to everyone. "Getting into" something, truly. Having fun for me, is all about archive binging and soaking up every little thing a fandom has to offer until you squeeze it dry.

I loved and played and still love and play harvest moon:back to nature(the PS1 one, thank God for Ps2 backward compatibility), last played it over the summer before I flew of to the UK. I always thought Popuri was sweet and the events made the town feel lively(for a ps1 game)

Though I have to say Save the Homeland sucked royal(no calendar events:( ) and was generally a boring game.
I have wonderful life but, now that I think about it. I only played it once and haven't played it in 3 years. Should I go back to it or do what I did to the save the homeland and sell it to a stupid friend?

Love Harvest Moon. Haven't owned one in a long time though sadly. The last one that I actually owned was Friends of Mineral town. I sank an endless amount of hours into it.

Wow, I really wasn't expecting to see this ancient thread resurrected. Regardless, I started with the original game on SNES (Through Virtual Console) and tracked down the rest of the games from there. They all do a pretty good job introducing the mechanics, but I feel SNES eases the player into it a bit more.

As for what you do, well, you farm. And woo a wife/husband. That's pretty much it, really. But it's incredibly fun, rewarding, and addicting. If you've ever gotten hooked on some kind of simulation game (The Tycoon series, for example) imagine that mixed with the Sims and you'll have a somewhat general idea of what to expect.

What would you consider to be the best of the series? If someone was going to check out one Harvest Moon game (not the whole series) which would you point them to?

Hell yeah. It's the kind of game that sounds kind of weak at first (Farm and raise pets, talk to npc's, marry girl), but ends up eating a huge amount of your time. I can't even imagine how much time I must have put into those games in total.

I know this isn't directed at me, but I'll answer anyway. I'd say the GBA games. I'm not going to say it's the best (not sure), but I find it would be a much easier game to get into. The visuals are much nicer than the previous ones (not important, but it's a bonus) and the length of days is much longer in the GBA version compared to Harvest Moon 64. They'd have a lot more time to do what they have to do and what they want to do, making it easier for them to get invested in the game.
