Hey guys, I am going to begin playing Final Fantasy XIV within the next couple of days. Since I consider The Escapist o be one of the best gaming communities out there, I figured I would see if anybody here is currently playing and willing to join up. Maybe we can get an Escapist guild going if there's enough people interested.

I was considering purchasing this, as last month I tried to get back into WoW (after about 5 years of not playing), and not sure if it is really taking its bite on me.

I am not clued up on this game at all though. Guess you would need to share race/team/server to some extent, to be able to team up? Or is Final Fantasy not faction-based/separated by factions?

Going from my past experiences with XI and what I know of the game, it doesn't seem to be faction based at all. Sharing the server information seems to be the most pertinent information as far as that goes. Starting location seems to be based on what job/class you choose to begin with, and the different races all provide different stats to better suit different roles.

Aw I wish I was. My sub ran out D: my boyfriend is currently playing it right now. The game looks like it has greatly improved since I was playing it. He gets dungeons so quick! Before I used to wait hours and hours to get one. I'd love to play again, though I have gotten back into WoW and I am currently loving the hell out of it, and when I have money I'm probably going to renew WoW instead of FF. But have fun! The community is pretty damn friendly on there and the game is great and the story is pretty darn good too.

Yeah, the community was half the reason why I decided to go with Final Fantasy over other MMOs. Final Fantasy XI was one of the only MMO games to ever suck me in and had one of the best communities out there, so I am hoping for more of the same from this new title.

I'm playing the ps4 beta. I'm actually waiting for the game to come out on ps4 before i buy it. I don't play games on PC since i'm not tech savvy, so havingnit on console is a godsend. I could buy it on ps3 and upgrade but i don't like digital copies of games. Anyways from playing the beta, i'm having a lot of fun with it.

The ps4 beta ends on the 2nd of march so if anyone is interested i suggest giving it a whirl.

I'm actually going to be playing on Playstation 3 until I eventually pick up a Playstation 4 when I have the money for it. Playing MMOs on a console definitely appeals to me as I'm not much of a PC gamer either.

We have an Escapist Free Company on Malboro.

Unfortunately... one of our members got hacked about a month ago and they took all the money from the guild bank. Millions of gil. The guild is pretty bleak right now. A lot of people haven't been logging in since then. I would love it if more Escapists joined us, it would really get everyone excited about the game again. I think. I love the lower levels and playing with new people. It's lots of fun.

@Crazycapnmorgan and I play, still. I only play a bit now, usually on weekends. The guild is run by myself and @Miyenne, and Morgan somewhat.

We do have a user group - http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Final-Fantasy-XIV-A-Realm-Reborn - so please post there, we still do chat on it, even though it's mostly depressing updates of "no update" concerning getting our gil back. We were THIS close to buying a good sized house.

Even if you don't join the Free Company, at least make a character on Malboro so you can keep up with us and we can help you out. We're good to answer any and all questions, run you through dungeons (as we all have lower level classes to gear up) and help you out with gear and such.

However, in the next month or so there's another big content update so people will trickle back in and play more. I just got my second job to 50 (Black Mage), so I do want to start gearing it up and actually learn how to use Flare properly. I'm also levelling a little Lalafell tank for a change of pace, too.

Anyway, please roll on Malboro. My character's name is Tiu Fenris, and the Free Company's name is Escapism. FC's are odd though, as the name isn't what you see beside a character's name - you'll see Tiu Fenris . Our tag is Luck. Not many of us on these days though. I would like to play more, but I work a lot and am usually too tired on weeknights.

Off topic but I believe it's most effective to use it near the end of your Astral phase when you have just enough MP left to use it, then use the ability that converts HP to MP, then recast it, then transpose for your Umbral phase.

OT: A few of us have been playing on Chaos - Moogle just starting recently and in a short while shall be forming a Free Company of our own for dungeons and random shenanigins.

Not currently, but I will resub as soon as I get a job. I'm on Coeurl, trying and failing to complete the lv 30 Gladiator quest to become a Paladin. God that quest is hard.

I think it's Thunder(2 or 3, there seems to be a discussion on which)>Fire>Fire 3 procs/Thunder 3 procs>Until about 300?ish mana, then Flare>transpose>flare>(Convert?)>blizzard>repeat... but I literally hit 50, did the level 50 quest, put on what Darklight and myth gear I had and logged. I love the Ifrit and Garuda HM fights so I'm looking forward to trying them as DPS and not a healer this weekend. Titan HM... well.. it took me over 150 tries to beat him on my Scholar, so I may never get my BLM relic. We'll see. I know that damned fucking dance by motherfucking heart now, though.

Flare>Convert>Flare>Transpose>Blizzard 3>Repeat>Fire>Fire3> loop to Flare minimum cost>Flare>Convert>Flare>Transpose, etc, Since flare uses all of your MP and has a minimum cost you maximise your damage output by using fire>fire3 rotation to get as close to minimum as possible before casting flare with an Astral 3 boost (and maybe raging strikes if your timing is good for a 20% boost). I've taken to using thunder right at the start of Umbral phases when I have just enough MP to fire one off before blizzard bombardment.

My thoughts on flare are mostly theoretical I'm only a level 24 Thaumaturge/16 Archer at this stage and have been on for 2 weeks, but I've found a nice functional groove I could work Flare into so I'm always dealing damage with no delays or waiting between casts.

Also is Scathe as pointless as it seems?

The theorycrafting on BLM makes my head hurt, so I'll probably just figure out my own groove and tell min/maxers to fuck off. As for scathe, it's useful if you're moving around and I also sometimes use it instead of another blizzard cast. Usually it's just used while positioning and repositioning, though.

Theorycrafting and such is also why I've kinda given up on Scholar... end game the class is so confusing and macro-heavy that I just feel like I'm not playing well. There are so, so many spells you're constantly using, too, compared to other classes. And that's not even counting manually controlling your faeries. ... Which I can't do. The macros and timing and rotations confuse the hell out of me.

I'll really only play scholar now as backup-healer and true support class. I'll do some healing and some DPSing. DPS can get pretty high if you're in Cleric Stance and using Selene, actually. If I can someday consistently play my scholar as support and not main healer I'll go back to it.

Yeah they made my head hurt to, I've just been figuring out by myself how to do what seems most effective to me so I'm never just stood there doing nothing.

Scathe is alright for that last dreg of health since it has no cast time to, if you're raiding with a good tank you shouldn't need to reposition much though.

Thunder + Sleep is pretty damn useful though if you're ever in a bind.

Not yet but I hope to in the summer :) Why wait so long? Final exams at uni. I'm sure that says it all... but I'm looking forward to finally being able to try this out! Haven't played an MMO in ages!

Not yet, but I did buy it a while ago when it was on sale for my PS3.

I'm just waiting until school is over and work calms down before I jump into it since I have a feeling that it will suck all my free time. It looks like a blast though.

So in the meantime, it will sit and be ignored. :/
