Capcom recently re-released Resident Evil 6 for PS4 and Xbox One. It's a mostly 1:1 port of the PC version with the default settings optimised to fix FOV and improve QTEs, and it runs at 60fps/1080p instead of extremely uneven 20-30fps/720p like the old console versions did. Only thing missing from the PC version is the Left 4 Dead content from Mercenaries: No Mercy.

If you've been playing the new version, how have you been finding it? If you've never played the game before, what do you think? If you played the old console versions, do you find the changes to be a significant improvement? Have your feelings on the game changed for better or worse?

I picked up the version for the PS4, and honestly, I absolutely love the damned thing. I didn't play it when it came out, so this is my first experience with the game, but I've just finished Leon's campaign, and I'm sitting here with a massive smile on my face.

I can certainly see why old-school fans of the series would hate it, given outside of the first 2 chapters, it completely abandons horror altogether (though, I suppose I also count as an old school fan, this has been a resident evil-ey month or two for me, having just played the remake/re-releases of RE:1 and 0 on the PS4 as well as Revelations 2), but I love this cheesy nonsense. The first chapter I found to be probably the best realisation I've seen in gaming of the initial zombie outbreak panic, with absolute chaos in the streets, and scrambling survivors fighting off the hordes. A bit of a lull in the Cathedral section, but after that it gets awesome again, with stupid over-the-top action, and Ada Wong hookshotting around everywhere like batman, being an absolute badass. And her silly flirting with Leon, leading his bumbling ass on, is as entertaining as it ever was. Then the series of last bosses (mild spoilers) where you fight some kind of mutant bull on a train, what is essentially a zombie T.Rex, and a giant mutant bug thing; were all really fun.

There's still 2 campaigns with the potential to ruin it for me (well, technically 3, but there's no way Ada Wong's Campaign would be a let down, she's awesome), but for the time being I'm super thankful for the fanbase for hating this game, for driving the re-release's price down to a low, easy to justify ?16.99; and for lowering my expectations so low that there was nowhere to go but up.

Thanks internet hate boner, for once, you're alright.

I played this game when it first came out, and while it certain has its problems--from story, to tone, and gameplay--it was never horribly bad in my mind. Just...average. I played all the campaigns with a friend, beginning to end, so that helped a lot. I suggest you try to track someone down as well, and it makes it much more enjoyable. There is certainly enough game there to justify the sixty dollar price, and if it's only 16.99, then you are getting a steal in my opinion.

I think a lot of the hate is from Chris' campaign, which really does feel more like Call of Duty than Resident Evil, but then again, Chris is working of the military unit that was created to FIGHT this sort of thing, so it's not like they're going in unprepared.

In regards to the topic question, I don't think I'll be picking this up again. As cheap as it is, I don't have a friend to play with, and that really makes a huge difference. When they release 4, I will jump on it though.

I feel RE6 was a much better solo game than a co-op one. You don't have to deal with human players clashing, you progress at your own pace, and the AI companion basically can't die. They're not that great at fighting, which does keep things balanced, but they help keep enemies busy. Like a little corgi running around the battlefield yapping away. Plus when playing co-op, you have to deal with the camera pulling away because the co-op partner did something, and you're constantly being interrupted if they get heavily injured. RE6 is a very good co-op game, but I'm not really sure co-op and fast paced action of this type go together.

Chris and Jake's campaign don't feature any zombies. This is where they become quite divisive. (RE4 and RE5 didn't have zombies, either. But that's another, very long discussion.) They instead have J'avo, fully intelligent humans who mutate into a variety of creatures in response to damage. Normal J'avo can use guns, drive tanks, fly helicopter gunships, and so on. Fighting enemies who can shoot you requires quite different tactics to zombies, and this alienates some players, I think.

Ada's campaign is the dumping ground for gameplay concepts that wouldn't work in co-op. Namely puzzles and stealth. Her campaign isn't hugely long, mainly serving to tie up the loose plot threads, and it does have the most difficult sections in the entire game partially because in solo mode, you have no partner character to catch you when you fall. A partner character was patched into her campaign only for co-op mode in late 2012, and playing as him sucks because he basically has nothing to do most of the time.

How are you finding the issue of documentation/tutorials? This is RE6's biggest weakness, in my experience. So many key gameplay concepts are either brushed over, introduced too late, or not mentioned at all.

For example, you can do all this cool hand to hand stuff with Jake at any time. You can basically dodge bullets with him. But the first time the game mentions Jake's hand to hand mode is during the final boss battle.

Well I'm glad I didn't pick up the PS3 version, and especially the ultimate edition. Didn't know the console version had frame rate issues and whatnot till this was announced.

I do plan on picking up this rather improved version at some point. But I have other things on my agenda to play now. Eventually I'll do the RE5 DLC missions, the Revelation games, and RE6.

I can see how the J'avo would be a point of contention, if they're wielding guns and driving tanks and the like, it may seem like you may as well be playing Gears of War, rather than a Resi game. But I'll judge that for myself tonight, when I delve into Chris' campaign.

Can't say I noticed any problem with documentation/tutorials in Leon's campaign (that said, it's entirely possible that some stuff was so vague that I missed it entirely and never noticed). Though at one point I did have to google 'why can't I pick up this damned ammo' because I didn't realise my inventory had a limit that was being reached by lugging around a bunch of remote mines.

For Jake's Campaign, does Sherry Birkin get anything interesting to compensate for her presumed lack of badass hand to hand combat, or would you highly recommend playing as Jake?

Despite being my worst game of 2012, I snagged it on PS4 due to the extra credit I had in my JPSN. I completed it on PS3, but it only took me 30 mins to remind me how bad this game was.

What specifically is bad about it? In 30 minutes, you'd have completed the QTE Prologue, and presumably the slow walking section at the university some players loathe for some vague reason. Where does the beef lie?
