I just hate all words in general, I think it is high time we do away with those old archaic ways and start to communicate strictly non-verbally.
Like the experiment with the rats where their thoughts were wired together? Then I could just thought transfer spunkgurglewhatver.. Over WiFi. :D

An Anglo-Australian 20 something came up with it as a joke, and people parroted it as if it was serious.
Wow, you managed to sum up my feelings on that word in just 1 sentence.
Unrelated, I found the Escapist through ZP,which I found through RVI. So thank you.

OT: Subjective, because it's the word that people use when they go into an obvious opinion topics and tell people that their opinions are opinions.

Gritty = it's got lots of cussing and yelling in it
Realistic = its color pallet consists of brown and grey and there's cover-based combat
Mature = it's got cussing, yelling AND lots of blood, because hey, that's totally what maturity means
Reimagining = something gaming communities will ***** about until the sun rises from the west and sets in the east (Game of Thrones reference woo)
Cinematic (by GOD do I hate it) = just another 5-dollar word developers use to trick us into prepurchasing their game. Also, means the game is as linear as a garden hose
Entitled (because of gaming communities) = see previous posts
"Games are an art form" = an excuse for people to complain when a new Call of Duty is released and when there's a gaming controversy ("They don't understand that games are an art form waah waah whine whine")

Can't come up with more right now, though I'm sure I will.

Spunkgargleweewee.

The Escapist is now rife with it. Can't we just go back to calling them FPS games, or military shooters?

Christ knows I like the guy, but not everything Yahtzee says is Holy Gospel destined to be repeated until the end of time.
I am with you 100% on this, it's getting annoying when someone plays a shooter and then calls it Spunkgargleweewee just because they didn't like it rather than actually mention reasons.
I'm with you guys. Though with me, it's not even people misusing it because they dislike certain FPS games. I hate the term because it's a stupid term... probably the dumbest thing to ever come out of Yahtzee's mouth, really for a huge number of reasons.

OT: A term that I tend to look at with negative connotation because of video games? Oh, that's an easy one. Nostalgia. Don't get me wrong, I love what it defines, I love the feeling it gives me, I just cringe whenever I hear the word now because I detest what it does to people.
I dont mind when Yahtzee says it though, since he makes it work. It fits his kind of character to say that kind of stuff. Its the fact that so many people on the forums feel the need to parrot him. Granted the Yahtzee fanboyism is nowhere near as bad as it was when I signed up. Back then there were so many Yahtzee impersonators

I hate the term "microtransaction" when applied to $5 purchases. Although I did realise while typing this that to the sort of corporate type that usually uses the turn $5 is micro... and that's terrifying.

Intrusive DRM: This term implies that there's such a thing as Non intrusive DRM. There isn't. Also, DRM is the direct result of rampant piracy. We wouldn't have this problem if people didn't keep stealing shit.
I'm sorry I wasn't aware that it had been decided that the end automatically justifies the means. Not to mention that punishing law-abiding citizens is not a good method of encouraging people to be law-abiding citizens

Whut? Terran is really UP in WoL, and that's coming from a Protoss. Zerg is face stomping everything, infesters are too good.

And besides, unless you're in High masters/GM, racial balance hardly matters at all. Apart from maybe the infester, no unit or race was OP enough to dominate low-mid level play. It's only until you get really high ranked that balance issues really start to matter, before then it's not important, low masters and below the most important thing is to just have more units than the other guy.

In HotS on the other hand, Terran probably is the strongest race, although it's a bit early to tell.

"Entitled" / "Entitlement" - The new buzzword for arrogant gits / trolls to haughtily dismiss any and all reasonable and evidence-based declaration that a game (or part therof) breaks it, has it's lore destroyed or when the devs flat out lie or make false promises etc.

It is largely used by people who have no idea what they are on about as they haven't played the game but have seen bits of it on YouTube. Their only claim to being well balanced is the chip on each shoulder and they figure that if they stick their nose in the air and dismiss any and all claims made by those who actually emotionally and financially invested in a game as "entitlement", it will somehow make them a better person and less of a cock. Newsflash - it's actually the other way round!

Either that or they are so pathetic all they have to do all day is call people names on forums, safe in the knowledge that no-one yet has invented a way to send a punch in the face via IM or email.

I'm working on it...

"Realism" Why the in the name of fuck do we want our games to be realistic? Games are supposed to be an escape and how can you escape from real life if the game is realistic?
Unrealistic!

Like when a game doesnt meet our standards for how a thing is in real life and "offends us".People say its unrealistic like that was what the game was trying to do the whole time. Maybe the game designers didnt care for realism in every single thing it does.

example"This black guy doesnt represent said minority in a most perfect noble way so that must be what the developer wants you to think all black guys are like that. Its soooo unrealistic."

Why do minorities/females have to be the ambassador/representative of there entire race/gender! We complain when people judge black people or women on a few bad apples but then we turn around and expect that a developer make this character like its the first and only time they will meet a person of a different color/a woman. Is this person gonna form an opinion based of this one teeny example and never trust or consider equal a person who is minority/gay/a woman? nay.

whoa offtopic. but anyway

I hate when people talk about the scantily clad ladies in a game with fireballs and monsters and says" Its unrealistic" Well the game wasnt before tits mcgee showed up.

Dont get me wrong. If you have a problem with stuff like that say that."it offends you" "makes you feel excluded" or my personal favorite since its more reasonable and less poor little ole inclusive me. "It gets annoying after the 500th time" All those are valid in a personal sense and can be debated. but when you say its unrealistic and the game is not A: Rainbow six or some other game that aims for realism then your argument is intellectually dishonest and you do yourself and your cause a disservice.

I agree with the dumbing down crowd, Getting real sick of hearing that.
Like in my day games were real you had to get some paper and draw the map as you went along. Now they give you this new fangeld auto map thing that shows you were you have been, gah games now days are sooo dumbed down :/

Another term I don't like is "bad design", because it's a dismissive, condescending piece of criticism that does nothing to elaborate on the issue and assumes you're some kind of authority on game design. Let's get one thing clear here: there's no such thing as bad design. There's design you like and design you don't like; there's lazy design, simple design, overly complicated design, obtuse design. There's a variety of fucking descriptors you can put before that single noun, and if out of all of them you choose BAD you are a lazy critic who isn't worth being taken seriously.
Bad design is valid, so long as you explain why. For example:

Killzone 3's spawning system is rife with bad design. The teams have fixed home spawns and the optional spawns can only be captured by a single class - the Tactician. Other classes cannot so much as contest a spawn. As such, if one team takes control of all the optional spawns, they can achieve total map domination to such an extent that their opponents are trapped in their home base and cannot break out.

That would be a valid argument for bad design; a perceived flaw is located, and extrapolated. A better example would be one that explains potential ways to fix the problem, as that shows much more thought as gone into the matter.

You know what, I'm just gonna come out and say: I hate the word "community."

Because in the gaming world, a community is a bunch of assholes who whine about pointless shit all day while sharing the same stupid or just flat-out wrong opinions...oh, and they occasionally play games within the same local network/platform/genre/etc.

Gamer .

I hate that word so much that i refuse to associate myself as a gamer . I play games everyday ( and addiction really ), own 10 consoles , own about 300+ games . Have played about 500 games in my career, Paricipated in a few local tournaments , spend an average of 6 hours a day playing games. It's my main hobby . But i will never call myself a gamer. I don't want to be associated with what "gamers" have become .

Mountain dew drinking, elitist, entitled , whiny, brats .

Yeah i said it . Come at me bros .

Because a game needs to be at least somewhat rooted in reality to make sense out of it.

Realism is not a binary term. Don't confuse realism that comes from having earthlike physics with the hyper-realism of modern-world shooters. They're different things, and realism in big doses can be detrimental.
Yeah yeah, I get that. However I don't understand the desire to have games be more like real life to the degree of your modern military shooters. I don't want my games to be any more realistic than Super Mario Bros. or Angry Birds, or Plants vs. Zombies, or Doom, or Skyrim, or Dragon Quest.

It's just my opinion, but I think the word people should use instead is "believable".
