Anyone besides me beginning to cringe at certain terms because of Video Games?

'Content'

As in 'delivering great content'.

I 'unno, it sounds icky in my mouth. Something feels somewhat insubstantial about that word. And 'content' often is. HI-YOOO.

This might seem a bit silly, but "cinematic." This is very problematic, as I am a film studies major. It's just that the word provokes a sort of beserker fury because it reminds me of the parts of gameplay the devs thought were too cool for me to participate in.
"cinematic" also has less to do with cinema and more to do with "like Michael Bay."

Hardcore and Casual!

Casual has become somewhat as a cuss word in the gaming community as of late, with any game with a casual difficulty and not trying to kick your nuts through your teeth is instantly the object of scorn. I remember someone complaining about Fire Emblem: Awakening's casual mode (which removes the permadeath) even though it was 100% optional and made the game more accessible (the game is the best selling in the series because people who didn't want to put up with the frustration of permadeath can fully enjoy the game) Casual and Classic (permadeath) mode are also separate from the actual difficulty modes of the game.

As for hardcore, the term is different depending on who you talk to, its either someone who plays Call of Duty for hours on end or someone who plays Dark Souls difficult games.

Also, Dumbed--!?

This!
I second on the Hardcore and Casual tags we've been dealt with recently and would like to add:

"you're not playing it the way it was meant to be played/The way it was designed to be played", honestly I've been hearing that roughly near the end of last year and the beginning of this one and it's gotten me in a few tizzy's (pun intended there =P) and it really serves no proper purpose other than to change the subjects mind to the way the accuser plays a game.

Gamer .

I hate that word so much that i refuse to associate myself as a gamer . I play games everyday ( and addiction really ), own 10 consoles , own about 300+ games . Have played about 500 games in my career, Paricipated in a few local tournaments , spend an average of 6 hours a day playing games. It's my main hobby . But i will never call myself a gamer. I don't want to be associated with what "gamers" have become .

Mountain dew drinking, elitist, entitled , whiny, brats .

Yeah i said it . Come at me bros .
This would be it. I can't stand that word, I'd never use it to describe myself or anyone who plays games, and I hate the fact that it carries so many negative associations that just being called a "gamer" is enough to devalue your stated opinions.

"Entitled".

I even made a rant thread a long while back about what the word actually means, and how it's been abused. It got buried quickly.

The Escapist is now rife with it. Can't we just go back to calling them FPS games, or military shooters?

Christ knows I like the guy, but not everything Yahtzee says is Holy Gospel destined to be repeated until the end of time.

That's Jim's job.
I want to bake you cookies, now.

I dunno, I'm pretty sick of "dynamic"
Means nothing, just a pretty word to put on a box.

I dislike hearing "casual" used as a derogatory term because it really shouldn't be.

I play Counter-Strike and Mass Effect and such because "casual" games like Angry Birds are, to me, a bit boring. I just play these "hardcore" games in a casual manner--that is to say, like a passive form of entertainment rather than a way of life. Playing a good competitive match in Counter-Strike is great fun, and so is sitting down and drawing a picture, plucking out a tune on my guitar, or writing a short story.

Games are a thing to do for me, no greater or lesser than many other things; I play them for fulfillment. Yes, I'm a casual gamer. Does anyone honestly believe that's a bad thing?

I...don't really hate any words. I just wish people would use them more properly.
While I do agree with this on the whole of the subject, I must admit that I've gotten a bit tired of the word "epic".

Maybe it's because I work in a Gamestop, where I'm subject to their... liberal use of it in everything, but I can no longer find any meaning in this word whatsoever.

I can no longer look at the word "Casual" as I once did, because of fucking idiot "TOTALLY HARDCORE GAMERZ" who make up the majority of popular forums dedicated to specific games.

Slightly off-topic, I can no longer hear or use the word "Luna" in any of it's meanings without equating it to a certain show I am a fan of.

Revolutionary, because whenever a developer has used it, the thing that is supposed to be, is not.

I'm with you two on that one, I hate the negative stigma it has outside gaming areas, like it makes you less of a person.

After playing some DOTA 2 with friends and hearing MOBA language tossed around for a few hours in a skype call...and THEN hearing said terms flung about elsewhere off the net...

Pretty cringe worthy.
Though "I'm going to solo gank your bot lane so hard" might just be the most hilarious things I've ever heard said (in a serious fashion) in public. Especially so due to other people not knowing what the hell it meant.

"Compelling" Every time I see a reviewer use that particular c-word, I feel a strong compulsion to strangle something. Its overuse is just as bad as the overuse of "addictive" was in the early to mid-90s.

Can I also add a word that's been ruined by the internet as a whole through its infuriating overuse? Yes, I'm going to throw "epic" into the ring.
I still love the word epic, but it's going to go the way of radical, tubular, and bodacious very soon. Not too long from now I'm going to have to get with the times or start being dated by my vocabulary.

Not video games specifically, and not really a word, but...'um'

I hate it when people use 'um...' or 'urm...' to preface something in an online debate. It's a completely pointless and condescending method of argument that people think shows how above their opponent they are but instead makes them seem fucking slow.

"Realism" Why the in the name of fuck do we want our games to be realistic? Games are supposed to be an escape and how can you escape from real life if the game is realistic?
Yeah! How dare people find games like ARMA or forza motorsport 4 fun!

Well, when it comes to video games, quite often it's not the words I cringe at so much as the shrill voice of the eleven-year-old screaming them at me.

That said, one in particular I've had a problem with in the past is "cinematic". I think it's supposed to mean story-driven, but apparantly the developers didn't get that memo and instead take it to mean "cutscenes so needlessly long that the player forgets what he was doing before it started".
