I will say one thing. Atleast they didn't replace the suspense and creepyness with all out hollywood bullshit action. I likes my scary themes. Not looking forward to Dead Space 2 :(

Actually i'll also say that i love it because for me alot of fun comes with listening to the dialogue of the various people, splicers etc etc and filling in the gaps for myself. I thought the Ryam Amuesements bit was fantastic. Just melted the ice between stations! Off to play again! XD

i had it preordered but on launch day i switched it to heavy rain! EXITED!
So want Heavy Rain! But alas... no PS3 for me.

I was so disappointed when they canceled the PC version and focused on making it a PS3 exclusive.

I loved the game, is it just me or are the levels significantly larger in this game compared to the first?

Having played BioShock 1 the week before playing BioShock 2, I have to say that BioShock 2 was a straight up improvement in most ways.

BioShock 1 was scarier - BioShock 2 pretty much throws out survival horror completely - but aside from that we've got better plasmid upgrades, a slicker hacking minigame, a development focus completely on the details since the existing engine was already well-established, and a much more satisfying ending.

I got the Direct2Drive version. DRM was either removed or completely transparent.

I loved the original so much that they could've pretty much released anything and I was going to instantly love it. I can't beliee people are saying that it's TOO much like the original...Surely that's a good thing?
The problem is the original looked so different from anything you'd find at the time.... /truncated
Except I felt the first one to be exactly like a bunch of other games I had already played 5 and 10 years earlier, except heavily watered down (pun very intended). Thus, to answer the TC's title question, I had absolutely zero interest in BS2. More of the same would be kind of monotonous anyway, but it was monotonous enough the first time through.

Be nice if I could play the damn thing. I wouldn't mind if it was more of the same, even thought what made the original was the story. More of the same isn't necessarily bad. But this has been ruined before I even started by the damned LIVE DRM bull.

Name them, seriously what games have any visual or philosophical resmblence to Bioshock?

However if people are saying the game gets better, I may give it a try.
If you can get past Pauper's Drop and Siren's Alley then I'd say Fontaine Futureistics is one of the best parts of the 2 games.

Also unlike 1, 2 doesn't fall apart at the end.

Im not buying it any time soon because I feel like I will be disappointed with it. I feel like it will be too much like the first Bioshock

While I'll grant that the "underwater paradise gone wrong" setting is fairly unique, the whole thing still reminds me heavily of Fallout -- fantastical alternate history story in which a glamorous society suddenly turns very far south. Philosophically, a [binary] morality system and ambiguous plot twists that leave you uncertain of whom to trust or of what's actually going on? Ultima, Deus Ex, The Witcher, System Shock.

But in terms of gameplay -- games that feature similar themes of [any combination of] exploration, discovery, choice and consequence, extended first-person perspective narrative, varying degrees of shooter and role-playing elements -- I've seen better. The list, to the best of my recollection, includes Dark Corners of the Earth, System Shock, Thief, Vampire Bloodlines, Deus Ex, Fallout, Arcanum, Half-Life, STALKER, Ultima Series, Gothic, Metroid Series, The Witcher.

Granted, none of these games are exactly like BioShock (as I perhaps erroneously worded in my first post), although, some do come close. But as a culmination, these games do all of the things that BioShock does, except they did them just as well however many years prior, and in many cases, they did them even better. Much of my interpretation of BioShock is also based on media beyond just video games -- Catch-22, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, Arthur C Clarke, Robert Heinlein, Iasaac Asimov, Harlan Ellison, pretty much any movie directed by Stanley Kubrick, etc.

All things considered I would rate the first BioShock as decent. Nice atmosphere with some interesting things going on, gameplay which at best is adequate, stagnant and monotonous at worst. This is just my opinion, and I'm not trying to convince anyone that mine is right. I'm well aware that my take on BioShock is highly subjective. I just feel like I've seen better and wasn't as impressed with the game as the general public.

Everything that used to be creepy about the first game is pretty hilarious in Bioshock 2.

Example: I crept up to a splicer who was playing dead in a crusty old apartment, she jumps up and yells "You're from the bank, aren't you?!"

Example 2: Oh no, BEEEES!!!!1

A certain part towards the end that let you see Rapture in a different way almost redeemed it for me, but in the end I still felt a little disappointed.

I bought it the day it came out and I'll admit I was a tad worried when I started playing. One of the best parts about the original Bioshock was descending into Rapture the first time. The big reveal of the city itself could go down in history as an iconic moment in gaming. Bioshock 2 didn't have the luxury of the unknown and so they had to try something different.
The whole plane crash sequence from the first was really good, but you get a similar reveal of the city the first time you go outside into the water. You walk over a ridge and city suddenly appears to you and the music peaks to create another great moment.

Moral system not fixed?
Don't make comments about games you haven't played or you'll just end up being wrong. Like now.
No I'm still correct, and you didn't provide a reason.

You can either be incredible nice, or incredible evil.

That's a horrid morality system.

That's true, and it is pretty cool when you get to go in the ocean, but you've still seen Rapture before, and while it physically is a similar action it's still different in a sense from seeing Rapture for the first time.

I'm saying that it's different.

Ultimately the choices are, kill a defenceless little girl, or be a defenceless little girls body guard and protect her.

Either extremely good, or Extremely evil.

That is not a good morality system, morals is not black or white, it's mostly Greys.

There are no greys in that system.

Yeah it's definitely no the same feeling as the first time. I think that scene in the second one retained a bit of the wow factor because I wasn't expecting it to happen (the music came on really well too) especially if you hadn't played the first game.
