[HEADING=2]What?![/HEADING]

Two pages and no examples of WoW yet?!

This needs to be fixed because it's one of the mind blowing soundtracks ever made. I often just stopped doing quests, got off my flying mount and just walked through certain zones just to soak up the atmosphere. And the soundtrack played a large role in that. I haven't played the game in ages but the music never left me.

Some examples of zones that did that to me:

I could keep linking stuff forever and ever and ever. But I won't, this will have to do. There's just too much.

Two honourable mentions that haven't been named yet had the same effect on me:

I could list quite a few other games though. Fable, UT99, World of Goo, plenty of games that have been mentioned already like Bastion, Red Dead Redemption and Deus Ex. It happens all the time with me.

As soon as I finished playing it I thought to myself, 'Man, I need this soundtrack in my life.'

snip
I swear to the gods and spirits; I will get that game. Dajum.
Mountains of Thunder certainly is great, I stopped on a mountain while flying around just to listen to it.

The Entire WoW soundtrack is great, like you I stopped playing ages ago but the music always stayed.

Oh so many times. The de Blob soundtrack stands out for me. Also LittleBigPlanet, those games have introduced me to a couple of fantastic bands through their soundtracks. I tend to collect soundtracks nowadays, I listen to them when I'm doing creative stuff- they can be very inspirational.

I think it says a lot about a game's music if it actually draws your focus away from the game and makes you notice how good the music is. I think most people would say a good game sountrack melds into the background and supports the atmosphere the game is trying to provide and I would agree. However I'd say it is more successful if it's one of the primary things you focus on/notice during the game.
That's an interesting distinction. In the film music world it's often said that the ideal soundtrack is the one the observer doesn't realise they're listening to. It's tempting to say that video games should be the same, but there's a big difference between them. A film composer can know precisely what is on screen at the moment each note sounds, and the director and composer can work together to reach that ideal. With games you always have some sense of player control over the gamestate, e.g. moving the camera with the mouse in Skyrim, so you can never be quite sure that the scene matches up exactly with the background music. There are ways to get closer to the ideal of course. Keeping with the Skyrim example you've got appropriate tracks that play when you enter combat, specific tracks for different enemy types (e.g. dragons), and more ambient tracks when the scene is calmer. But unless you can somehow have a score writing itself in real time based on some set of motiefs together with the gamestate (in the same way that the players view generates in real time based on their input and a set of models/textures) then you can never fully reach that film ideal.

In Skyrim, the most memorable tracks are going to be those you were fully aware of during game time, e.g.

But then listening to the soundtrack after playing the game you come across tracks you felt you knew, like really knew well, but weren't consciously stuck in your head until you listened to them independently of the game, like

So what's technically the better piece? The second fills its role better by being bland. It's purposefully bland so that it can fit into different scenes.

I don't actually own any OSTs, though I will often look up tracks on YouTube. I think a good OST won't necessarily work outside of its proper context. In fact I think the better an OST is at being a game soundtrack, the less relevant it will be outside of that context. I sometimes listen to tracks to bring back feelings I experienced playing through the games, but I wouldn't listen to them purely as a piece of music. Something about that doesn't quite sit right with me.

I always really loved the soundtrack to Medievil. One of my favourite games of all time, with a soundtrack that really draws you into the world.

Sod it, just listen to the whole thing. [http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL53CA569B3CC4B3E1&feature=plcp]

Other soundtracks I love include:
- The Elder Scrolls series, from the peaceful scene-setters of Morrowind to the epic battle themes of Skyrim
- The Ace Attorney games. The leitmotifs that seem to perfectly sum up the characters, the courtroom themes that set the tone brilliantly, and of course the Cornered themes that really inspire that feeling of "Oh yeah, I'm great."
- Knights of the Old Republic, as mentioned already by Soviet Heavy

I have to say I'm quite enjoying this thread. So much excellent music to listen to, including some brilliant pieces I'd probably have never heard otherwise.

The Walking Dead Pharmacy Office theme and the one where Lee and Mr. X are squared off in the rain and Lee is telling him it's over.

That happened to me pretty much every time a new track started playing in Dynasty Warriors 4.

Same with Jak X to a lesser degree.

Nobody mentioned Shadow of the Colossus yet? Ok, here it is. The thing with SotC was that since it was so minimalistic, the music stands out so much more than usual. This was coupled with the fact that most of time when you're just travelling across the (beautiful) landscape there's no music, just the sound of the wind brushing against the desolate land. When the music do come when you fight the colossus, it makes it so much more epic and memorable. The way the music changes as your fight process also made was done really as well, so that the music isn't just there, it supplements the action by intensifying the fight (or giving a sense of foreboding in the case of the last colossi). Few pieces music has the ability to instantly transfer me to another land. The SotC OST is one of them, in a way that was only possible because it was in a game.

Special mentions goes to the Truth and Reconciliation suit of Halo:CE as well. Stood out when I was playing it back then.

FF6, bought the piano collection and the orchestral soundtrack after hearing Terra's theme for the first time, the opera scene with a full orchestra is absolutely orgasmic.

I do the same with anime as well, first time I watched the first episode of Cowboy Bebop I downloaded the Cowboy Bebop OST, same with Darker Than Black (Go Dark is such a brilliant track) and Neon Genesis Evangelion.

I don't pay too much attention to video game soundtracks, certainly never bought one. Probably the only song i've really sat and listened to was a track for the zone Dun Morogh in world of warcraft... god how I love that song, sets me on a nostalgia trip EVERY time.

Wow, three pages and no one has said Ace Combat 5 yet?

Anyway, some of the best soundtracks I've heard ever. After finishing the game, I immediately bought the whole OST.

When this song played, it probably the first time I ever cried in a video game too...

And then how could I forget about the piece de resistance.

And then there's the Mass Effect soundtrack. I bought all three after completing the games. I'm also way too lazy to look up the best ones on youtube because there's just way too many.

Bastion. Bastion Bastion Bastion.
I went straight out and bought both Zia and Zulf's themes. Great soundtrack, and went perfectly with the end.

The track that plays in the first Mass Effect when you're inducted as a Spectre and then also plays again when you're giving your inspirational speech to the crew has always been in my good books.

Recently though, I've come across this gem of a game (and by extension, its soundtrack):

I'm also partial to the Sword & Sworcery soundtrack, and some bits from Arkham City:

^ Another game that does a good job of mixing ambient music with the more pressured stress themes like Deus Ex does.

And one more from Beyond Good & Evil... the first time I played, as soon as I got the jump kit I tried to leave Hillys' perimeter. And then this happened.

I didn't like Zero all that much. I liked the little cameo of Cpt. Bartlett, and that was about it.

I always notice the soundtrack. I care about it a lot. I tend to notice ambient music in stealth games more often than in other genres. Hitman, Splinter Cell and Deus Ex: Human Revolution (face it, it's a stealth game) all have amazing ambient soundtracks. Every piece of music from DE: HR is pure gold. I especially like this short one:

The Witcher games have wonderful soundtracks. But the one that stood out the most was The Dike from The Witcher 1:

And of course there are games like Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed and Metal Gear Solid. Amazing soundtracks. A must have for all the fans of those series.

Yup, it's gotta be done.

Singing along with the chorus all damn day.
When I first heard that music I said to myself "Oh god THIS is the battle music? Well this is gonna suck..." and about 5 minutes later I pretty much had the song memorized and was singing along to it, probably my all time favorite battle theme

So technically that can't be the song I instantly got, but this one from Persona 4: Arena I had to get instantly (luckily this remix of it was on the included soundtrack)

I love a good instrumental

Edit: Note to self, if you post in a music related thread right before you leave for work, you WILL have the song you posted stuck in your head allllllllllllllllllllll day
