The post-apocalyptic setting in games

Most of the games I've played recently they had this setting , "Spec ops: The Line" , "Gears of War 3", "Resistance 3" and now its in upcoming games like " the last of us" where everyone says "Fuck" in every other sentence and cuss each other out and to be honest I'm sick of it, I don't hate them I'm all for story-telling in many ways but everyones doing the same thing now ( as if we hadn't already established )
I missed playing games that were simple concept with tone that could be light and heavy or in broad terms "teen cartoons" Starfox, sly cooper , jak and daxter, Okami, custom robo ( I know these are old but just humor me Please ) today games are all shooters/post-A based and in my world "Realism" has become a dirty word, wasn't the point of video games suppose to give up some form of escape from the real world, something we can lose ourselves even without being reminded of the hatred filled world we live in. and the Army self righteous attitude and always advertising the Marines has got me to the point where I want to vomit when ever there brought up as heroes..

I know iphone games are becoming a big thing now games and all being unique in there own way. but what about for those who don't have an iphone/ipad/icomputer/iconsole lulz the game market is down yet companies just want to make money without thinking of what the things people want, same with the movie industry.

"the public is to blame course, when you boil down to it,something sells great from the public company makes more of that thing to make money company makes something different it doesn't sell great, company makes same thing its sells even more company sticks with that." X( ) don't get me wrong I'm not asking for companies to all be light hearted so-in-so's I just want something different t be seen on consoles like last gen.

EDIT: can people just bypass the DAMN poor examples I have, and get my bloody point. I try to put examples so some people wouldn't throw my way certain games I wouldn't really care for. No, I don't play xbox live games b/c I don't spend $50 a month on points. NO. I only play certain games that interest me not every game that appears in the media, I only play for the story and no not JRPGs b/c I want stories where the main lead isn't an emo. so stop trying to tell me about how I present my topic just get the damn message, this is all for fun anyway, why do people take things to the heart so much..

I am getting sick of the post apocalyptic setting in games, movie and tv shows alike.
I would definitely appreciate if they came up with more games like Grand Theft Auto where you dont have to be bad, but you choose to be bad...

I have no problems being an animal in games :)

Eh... kind of?

Granted, it's a bit overused, but not to the point of annoyance.

There would certainly be room at least for some different takes on post apocalyptic settings.

There is a reason that almost all triple-A developers have moved away from the more cartoony visual styles and that is because modern graphics would make them look completely insane. Like that hyper-realistic picture of Mario.

OT: I tell you what I'm getting sick of, people making this bullshit generalisation that all games are the same now. What you highlight make up a very small portion of the games that are released every year; yours just happen to be reasonably big titles in terms of PR.

And for anyone still blinded by nostalgia: Do you remember playing Sonic the Hedgehog? Okay, now do you remember every other game for the Mega Drive being a copy of Sonic the Hedgehog with slightly different sprites (with the same being true of Mario on Nintendo)? Sure, they were more colourful, but at the end of the day developers were still re-packaging the same experience and selling more sand to the beach.

Games today are more creative than they've ever been, due in no small part to the fact there are so many more creative outlets than there used to be (hey, remember in the early 90's where you could either make games for Sega and Nintendo consoles or you could not work ever) and your point about iPhones is completely asinine because you could turn around and say the exact same thing about consoles.

The flipside of gamings advances is that productions costs are now much, much higher and the people who hold the purse-strings are understandably reluctant to take a risk on anything other than a sure thing (remember: what you like does not always equal what is popular.) While I'd like to see developers get more creative control over their projects, I'd also like to see us make it through at least one month without having to read about another renowned studio cutting half their staff or closing doors altogether.

In short, your argument hasn't got a leg to stand on because you're propping it up with examples that mean nothing.

Hold on, I can't understand this.

Oh, okay, then - you do that.

And I agree with rob_simple, too.

You must have some severe form of tunnel vision to look at all the games out in recent years, and upcoming years, and deciding that "most games" are post-apocalyptic setting.

I realy "most games" is slightly out of context, so to bring it into context, if "most games I've played" are in a post apocalyptic setting and you're getting sick of it, stop buying and playing games with a post apocalyptic setting. Go buy something from todays steam sale, none of the games on the daily deal or flash deals right now are post apocalptic.

The last semi big game that I picked up was about historical Japanese figures conquering each others kingdoms using Pokemon...

Soooooo....No, I can honestly say I'm not getting sick of that because so few game I actually play have that theme.

Yes, certainly, the post apocalyptic setting is very adaptable to look and feel different in every different scenario.

But I do get what you mean. It's a little like doctor who of late; It's always for all the marbles. Always the entire world/universe, rarely any smaller, more personal crisis like a kidnapping or hostage situation. This scale ups the stakes greatly, but makes it more difficult to focus on smaller stories.

So you're sick of post-apocalyptic settings in games, think the way to solve this is for people to stop buying games with that setting, yet have bought at least three recent games that you consider to fall into that category? I think there's a slight flaw in your logic there.

OT: I'm not really sick of it to be honest, but then I don't really play that many games that have a post-apocalyptic setting. And therein lies the beauty of gaming; there are always alternatives. Like several posters above me, I don't really understand arguments that claim 'all games are the same' because they really aren't.

Uhh well sometimes ... wait no all the time the same thing happens as someone told before, remember snes days? everything was like super mario, when street fighter 2 showed up BOOM! fighting games fever, then we had exploring and collecting millions of same color coins in the start of the 3d era, then the gta copycats, every game was about being a criminal and going from the lowlest tile to being da man, the epic times, when Dragon age became so big, every game coming out had this epic look, the musical games era with everyone playing musical instruments, and now the post apocaliptyc senting, what will be "cool" for game publishers tomorrow?, lets just hope for the best.

I'm more tired of playing through stories that revolve around fighting back an invasion or saving the world. The problem with apocalyptic settings is that they all look the same, they don't always have to look so dull.

Not really, for the same reason I?m not particularly bothered by all the military shooters. Sure there may be a lot of them but I don?t buy everyone that comes out. There are plenty of other games around that differ in greatly game play, tone and visual style. Granted I might feel differently if I had only what game stores stock to choose from rather than digital distribution.

Side topic: No though most game that have an animal like protagonist are of a style I do not like so I?m a bit less likely to go for them unless they are really awesome in other areas.

Oh another one of these. Ignoring the games that don't fit with your stereotype and naming about 5 out of the ten or so games that do and pretending that all modern games fit that mould. That's fun.

Even in post apocalyptic games there are VAST difference, compare New Vegas to Resistance 3, the ONLY similarities are that there are guns (big woop) and it's post apocalyptic. Everything else is different.

Then there are all the non post apocalyptic games, you know the vast majority of those on the market.

Er, well, most games are not post-apocalyptic, so no, I'm not sick of them.
Frankly, as long as a game's world is well established and done justice, I couldn't care less about the setting.

Not really. The whole post-apocalyptic scenario and every variation of it is something I have a deep interest in, and there are a number of games I find enjoyable. The ones I don't, I avoid, and wait impatiently for them to make an amazing one to make up for it.
