Anyone else have this habit?

When I play WoW. The game's music is fine, and whenever there's actual voice acting or cutscene's I'll pause the music, but it's just too damn quiet and repetitive. I'll play my music over multiplayer sounds, because I still need to hear what's going on in multiplayer games (explosion means stay away from the furking tank), but other than that I usually rather hear the game music.

I am guilty of this but i mostly do it when playing flash-based browser games. My current game is Amateur Surgeon on Adult Swim.

Oh yeah, I like to match what I am playing to what I am listening to.

I try to do the opposite a lot of the time, just for giggles. Mixing Super Paper Mario with Dragonforce creates not only a massive contrast, but it also damn near melted my face with awesome.

Dragonforce is not really my thing, but I totally dig your idea. I think I am going to have to try it sometime.

its impossible for me to concentrate without listening to the game sounds. even in first person shooters i need to be able to hear to actually do anything. except for WoW

If you can do the combo just right, with any music and any game, if you can find that sweet spot, it will feel like your high.

For the record, this is what playing AudioSurf feels like all the time.

Doing this ultimately lead to less effectiveness in L4D. It did, however, add a new "OH SHIT!!!" factor to tanks.

The games that actually keep me enthralled must not be ruined by outside music. If I lose interest I just blare stuff like prodigy during battles or something, Prodigy makes everything awesome xD (well maybe not 'everything')

i almost always listen to other music (usually pandora.com) while playing a game. i usually have the game volume adjusted to i can hear dialogue and environmental/ambient sound but not the background music.

Like someone else said: Only in games that I don't want to be immersed in. Driving games, for example.

Depends on the game, mostly handheld games, nothing like gangsta rap and mario kart ds or beastie boys and pokemon.

I do this all the time with whatever game I'm playing. Nine inch nails while running through the wasteland of fallout 3, deep purple while plowing through dungeons in WoW, or metallica while playing NFS Most Wanted, whatever music comes to mind, I load it up and have it going in the background. There are only a couple of games where I like the soundtrack enough to keep that, rather than having my own music playing, and those are the HalfLife games, and Diablo 2.

During Red Dead Redemption I dug out my Western Classics collection. Kind of disappointed Rockstar didn't do the same. Some of the music was good in that game, but the ambient music was uninspiring to the point of irritating.

I didn't have much in the way of music until the Internet brought it to me so I would just mute the TV. I grew to like game music and sounds more, or just be annoyed by them less, and started playing FPSs, where the sound cues are nice to have, so I stopped doing that. Now I play music when I'm using the Forge in a Halo game and otherwise just listen to whatever I'm playing.

No, but I don't imagine it's that uncommon since some games give you the option to turn off the in-game music.
