London is burning. The economic giant of America is failing. Even nature seems to have become even more turbulent.

And yet, I'm a little excited, anyone else?

I'll tell you why. Change. The people of britain are finally angered to the point of mas riot, and America is no longer considered 100% safe for business. These events seem to summon a great upheaval in first world society. Change is painful, of course. Change can be dangerous, and not necessarily for the better, but still I feel almost lucky to live in such possibly historic times. I may change my tone if things take a further turn for the worse, but still, this is very interesting.

EDIT: on the rioters: I would like to reinforce that I do not condone the rioters actions, but I feel that they are doing this, in a way, because they are angry. Yes there are some in the mobs just looking for trouble, but there will also be those who are simply too enraged to be ignored anymore. Even those just their for trouble are no doubt angered as well on some level. Stupid, selfish, misplaced anger? Definately. But simple anger nonetheless.

EDIT 2: excited probably isn't the right word, but I can't describe it any better. Intrigued? Meh.

Were really not in our biggest upset, we American dogs. The Market got killed yesterday but really it has seen much worse. Yesterday didn't even make the top 20 for all historic downs in the market. London is rioting for all the wrong reasons and has seen this before. Really I don't see much changing. Don't get me wrong I would love to see it but people have been here before and we will be here in future as well.

Haha no.

Those greedy buggers are doing it because they could get away with it, using the fact that a man who was threatening police with a loaded gun was shot as an excuse, and the other later ones because everyone else was doing it and there was simply not enough police.

But yes, it is all vaguely exciting.

Yeah! America is suffering a minor economic downturn that is nothing compared to things that it survived and England is rioting for all of the worst reasons!

I can't wait to see how the world changes for the worse!

Eh, the world is bad, but give the American economy 5 more years and it'll stabilize. I'd currently be terrified if I lived in Britain though, not excited.

Excited?!? EXCITED!!??!!??

Homes and businesses are being burned, looted and trashed, people are meeting this entire situation with total racism, and it doesn't show signs of stopping abruptly. Parts of the world are going to shit...again.

No. Excited is not the word I'd use.

Great Depression part 2? No thanks. Excited isn't the term I'd use. Perhaps afraid.

You might want to educate yourself on what's actually happening and why.

I dunno. I would feel kinda excited to see maybe a Zombie Apocalypse so that I can see how long I last wielding my steel Keyblade I use for cosplay, so why not feel excited about seeing the world turn to shit, the American economy turn to shit, and everything else turn to shit, only to sit in my chair and think "wow, I'm experiencing this? o_O"

Considering I live in Lewisham and spent last night staying up until 3 AM with my windows locked, my curtains drawn, and a butcher knife by my side in case the rioters came down my street...no, I'm not very fucking excited at all.

Not really. Riots are nothing to get excited about, unless you're in them and loot a free big screen TV or something.

And it's not like there haven't beent small depressions before in the world economy. This one is hardly worth noting, most indexes only went down like 5% or something.

All in all, business as usual.

You sound like Natalie Portman who said that a recession is exciting. No I don't think it's exciting.

Probably going to have to head down to South London to get my brother out of there soon, so no, excited isn't the word I'd use.

Being $14.34 trillion in debt is minor?

As for the riots, i've said it before and i'll say it again .... it's nothing new. Every few years us Brits like to have a riot or 2 it's been happening for about 60 years maybe longer.

I know there have been 6 riots at least in the last 30 years.

Starting with my home town 1 year after my birth then on to Burnley where I live now:-

http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Burnley
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_hooliganism - Mainly due to Brits rioting
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_riots - a good list of riots .... lots in the UK
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_Squad_%28hooligan_firm%29 - yay more Burnley football hooligans

Riots happen .... a lot.

It's nothing new people, stop getting all shocked.

You mean it hasn't already? Damn...

OT: Excited? I do think you are using the wrong word, annoyed is more like it. America will be fine, yeah yesterday the market took a beating, but it wasn't the worst beating ever. And London is rioting for wrong reasons so I seriously doubt change is going to happen in the positive over there.

If change was so wonderfully exciting then how come shit like this is so common over there? Exciting? For you maybe.

I totally agree with you OP. While it's terrible news, it looks like the world could be on its way for real change that will benefit the people. We had the Arab spring, now we're seeing that our governments and the economy doesn't have the people's best intentions in heart. Depending on how things go, it's a perfect opportunity to make a push towards a better tomorrow.

There's a reason the saying "May you live in interesting times" is considered a curse.

...particularly when that change is away from societal stability, and many years of growing prosperity[footnote]These two examples being relatively insignificant examples of the much larger trend that erupted back in 2008, with roots going back far longer than that.[/footnote]. It's much too late to actually do anything about it, and thus it's a development which must sooner or later be accepted: but the Swan Song of first world affluence - and the political instability and increasing number of/burdens on the weak this will bring - is hardly something to call a blessing.

It'll be a time of increased poverty and extremism, and while there'll be more of them, it'll still be the weak in society who'll pay the price, as it always has been during times of economic attrition. No reason to get all apocalyptic about it though, at the very worst the first world will simply become akin to the second in terms of economy (...and social system).
