Anyone else think Sutherland was badass as Big Boss?

Yeah his 5 lines of dialogue were well-delivered.
Sorry you didn't care enough about the game to delve into the optional tapes. His lines were there, they do exist.

To be honest, I never really liked hayter as snake, he sounded too cheesy, cringey, and forced. Hayter's childish attitude after finding out the wouldn't be involved in mgsv, combined with Sutherland being a class act towards the community has not made me look on him any more favorably.

TBH, Hayter's a dick imo

I'm sorry, but after 16 years of doing the voice of both (with one literally being a clone of the other) David Hayter is one of those actors who IS the character. Just like live action actors, voice actors can become the only person who can truly fill a role, and having Sutherland coming out of nowhere to voice Big Boss is just one of the many things that makes MGSV end up being a good game in a vacuum, but a terrible Metal Gear game, though his taking the role is far from the only reason this is the case.

Looks creepy here.

I did in fact listen to those dry plot-dumps from Troy Baker, in which Kiefer occasionally replies.

He's a dick? I think you're allowed to moan a bit if you get fired from a gig you've had for 16 years with no notice. One that defines you as much as you define it.

How did I know this way more about you being asshurt over Hayter, than about Kiefer's lack of dialogue?

The tapes were cool to me, sorry you couldn't enjoy them.

Regarding Hayter, He could have bowed out with dignity and remained a beloved part of the universe as a whole, but chose to act like a baby, mess with the heads of fans needlessly and to lash out at the occasional fan.

He's a dick and he showed his true colors, after he wasn't asked to return to the series.

Eh, I think they should've just gotten Richard Doyle or David Hayter to voice Venom Snake.

Keifer's a good actor, but his lines in MGSV really aren't worth his talent, I found him to be mostly nondescript, bringing nothing to the role that any number of other voice actors couldn't have accomplished. His acting is fine, but his dialogue he is given to perform extremely underwhelming.

The tapes are where the bulk of the dialogue was, and even they weren't that interesting, his lines within the game are bare bones at best. I suppose that's more a knock against the writing than the voice acting, but I didn't hear anything from Sutherland that made me think, "man it was a really good idea to get someone like him to voice act the protagonist for this game". Big boss himself didn't really come off as badass to me, just kind of an empty cipher, his is not the performance I will remember thinking about that game a year from now. I was way more interested in hearing Miller, Ocelot, and Code Talker having conversations with each other than I was listening to Keifer just kind of drawl his way through conversations to prompt the more interesting characters to say their lines.

In the end, Keifer adds a more down trodden weary quality that I don't think David Hayter could have pulled off with his usual Snake voice, but the dialogue makes me feel like they wasted the actor's talent, sort of like Dinklage in Destiny, it feels like they wasted the talent and potential they could have had by giving the actor nothing interesting to say. Unlike Destiny, at least in MGSV the other characters managed to at least somewhat make up for that, until the plot dives off a cliff in chapter 2.

I can somewhat agree with this, I thought he did fine, but they certainly could have done a lot more with him.

Forgive me if it's already been said, but didn't David Hayter actually damage his vocal cords when recording MGS2? He never sounded right after that.

See, unlike Elias Toufexas who uses his actual voice for Adam Jensen, Hayter had to force his throat to make Snake's voice.
That's not his regular voice at all though. He has to put on a voice for Jensen.

Aw c'mon, everyone in MGS sounds cheesy, that's part of the fun! And to be honest, I think the cheese is also necessary in order to facilitate the more insane elements of the the MG universe, plus it allows for moments of light heartedness in what is a pretty bleak and depressing universe. I think the only moments of humour in PP was Kaz's Hamburgers and Snake being smelly.

If you like Hayter that's fine. I was never really into him as snake, he was just kind of there and served his purpose. Then the way he acted after the Sutherland thing really turned me off of him.

This is coming from a person who's favorite is Snake Eater.

As someone who watched all 8 Seasons of 24 in the span for 2 months I welcomed Sutherland in the role.

However, The Phantom Pain being a Metal Gear game in name only, the story was arse. I would of loved if we had the story we were promised with hundreds of lines from Sutherlands voice.
This. I just imagined jack bauer as big boss the entire time. Sutherland is jack bauer and will always be as far as im concerned.

No no, that's his actual voice.

He puts a more of a monotone inflection on words as Adam Jensen, but that is actually how Elias Toufexis sounds.

:p

OT: I don't really know if you can call Kiefer's portrayal of Big Boss as "bad ass" considering he has only like, 4 lines in the entire game.

Did Sutherland do a good job? Simple test, try and picture David Hayter saying "I won't scatter your sorrow to the heartless sea".

Adam Jensen puts on a far more Batman gruffness than his actual voice.

But Venom Snake wasn't the real Big Boss, just someone that was remodeled and hypnotized to look/act like him. I mean yeah I can buy the facial reconstructive surgery, but I don't think you can do all that much to make someone sound different. Maybe that was the point of not having Hayter or Doyle do the voice, cuz it's neither of their characters in the first place

It's my understanding Venom already talked like Snake. Not EXACTLY, but close enough.

Problem is that Sutherland voiced Big Boss in Ground Zeroes, where you play the real Big Boss, so it isn't some subtle hint at the plot twist, it is a simple change of Voice Actor.

I haven't played the Phantom Pain so I can't say anything about Sutherland's Venom Snake, but his Big Boss in Ground Zeroes was ass.

Although Hayter sounded a bit more cartoonish in his portrayels of the characters, I liked that about the series and to me Big Boss as done in Peace Walker and MGS3 will always outshine Big Boss as done in Ground Zeroes.

So in short; No, I did not think Sutherland was bad ass as Big Boss.

Boring, unnecessary, complete waste of money. The game would have been better without Sutherland. Hell, had they not had to pay his doubtlessly inflated salary, I'm sure they could have extended development time long enough to actually finish the game (e.g. Episode 51 and Camp Omega Revisit)
