Anyone else think that game companies should just stop with alternate endings?

I just hate the concept altogether. especially when you have to play the entire game again to get a different one. *looks at Shadow the Hedgehog*

You don't *have* to play the game again. The whole point of alternate endings (and Shadow the Hedgehog is a VERY good example of this) is that the game is able to provide different endings for those who make different moral choices. If you act bad, you'll get a bad-guy's ending, and if you act good, you'll get the good-guy's ending.

In Shadow the Hedgehog, notice how making the 'evil' choices doesn't result in a negative ending for Shadow. All the endings revolve around the fact that it was the character's (and the player's) choice to make.

I dunno...maybe if the game has lots of replay value to begin win it woulfn't be such a bad idea. Otherwise, jsut save the game before you choose the ending, and play from then on a few times.

It's a good idea. It's part of what makes games special, sets it apart from books or music or film "I the player have an effect on this story". The trouble is effectively realising the ideal. Any game with multiple endings has x number of endings triggered by responses to situations 1 2 and 7. when multiple endings means a million and 1 ways the game can possibly end then i'll enjoy em.

no, because in games like 999 and alpha protocol alternate endings actually mattered.

some games do it right, some don't. same with everything else in gaming...

Some games do it right some don't. And I loved how Shadow of the Hedgehog did it, the only time it annoyed me was with the first level, each time you played you got a different level or used a different path it kept the replays interesting enough other then just choose different dialogue in conversations, play exact same level again.

I like it, depending on how it's done. If it's just a binary choice at the end, it doesn't provide any extra gameplay, it just either forces you to play through the exact same game again or watch the other endings on Youtube. If, however, the ending comes as a result of a completely different path you took through the game, you can play through again and get a different experience, i.e. it does add to the gameplay.

Sometimes its a good thing... it can give you another reason to play if you enjoyed it.... see how things can turn out different. its just one of the reasons i enjoyed Heavy Rain.

Yeah, it depends. If it's just a second ending that requires you to play the entire game again and is based on some arbitrary thing, yeah, it's annoying. But in the style of games like Mass Effect, or Heavy Rain, where your choices shape the way the story turns out, it can be a great thing.

I always just consult Youtube if I want to see the other endings. No replay neccesary.

Why should it matter if there are different endings? If you didn't like the game, chances are you won't care, if you even finish it. If you did like it, you'll probably enjoy playing through it again to see the other one(s). I personally prefer to have the choice rather than forced to watch an ending that I might disagree with.

Like a lot of other things in games, it depends how well it's executed. For me, Deus Ex: Human Revolution was very much an example of how not to do multiple endings. Because they were all decided on the basis of a single choice, none of them had any weight or meaning. Similarly, games that require you to be all the way evil or all the way good are not very good ways of doing multiple endings, as they serve only to make you replay the game again out of character (or as a different character). I think thst developers need more time to perfect the implementation of alternate endings.

No, because some games manage to do alternate endings properly and provide equally viable resolutions to their narratives, e.g Silent Hill 2.

If they do it right it's not a problem, Deus EX: Human Revolution did it wrong. Chrono Trigger on the other hand executed the mechanic perfectly, with the different endings being at different times, making it possible to beat the game sooner than normal. Another example of something that game did well.

Not necessarily. They should just go for a little less complexity. People said 2 endings in bioshock made it shallow, but as a result, gameplay was pretty good. So maybe perfect 3 endings, then move on to 4, then 5, and so on. The industry should pace itself is what I'm saying. They're too eager to revolutionize everything. Perfect some stuff first.

If we didn't have alternative endings to video games anymore, though, we would never have gotten this gem!

Now that would have been a damned shame, no?
[sub]It is technically an alternative ending, as it deviates from the original, unaltered ending.. shut up.[/sub]

Also, the same general principle applies. If it is done tastefully, it will work. If it is half-assed, it will not. Mass Effect 1/2, Heavy Rain and Dragon Age: Origins have pulled it off perfectly in the past.

I think they should let multiple endings stay... but only if they're willing to consider one to be canonical.

Bethesda didn't think of that as the made Daggerfall, and when they had to come up with a canonical ending... they picked all of them.

(In the above link, you played the unknown agent, and the game's ending depended on which faction you gave the artifact to. Canonically, YOU GAVE IT TO EVERYONE.)
