The Amazing Fan Art one of the fellow escapists found and posted, made me realize once more that with the universe LoZ has, it could be set up for a really good RPG. Now it would probably be more inclined to a JRPG (ie: preset story) or possibly an Open World RPG where you don't control link.

Not to say that they should stop with their current LoZ style of games but maybe a spin off?

What does everyone else think?

Edit: I know their is Zelda 2, as ppl have mentioned, but that was released back in 1987.

No I think nintendo should keep making Zelda games the way they want to make them.
Its a method that worked so far so don't fix what isn't broken I guess.

Maybe.

I found the RPG elements added by the "rings" to be quite fun in Oracle of Seasons/Ages.

I'd gladly accept it if Game Freak (Pokemon) developed it. as far as I know, they're the only first-party RPG development studio that Nintendo has.

That would require actually changing the formula, and taking a risk. And as we all know that's a big no-no for Nintendo.

... What about PaperMario? Or the Super Mario RPG? Or going from Platformer Metroid to FPS Metroid?

I wish they'd make a legend of Zelda in a feudal Japan setting, but an RPG could be quite good too.

Would bring new concepts to the series.

Tbh I don't want them splitting their dev teams across two projects, which is what this would entail. Anything that stands to delay Skyward Sword in my opinion is baaaaaad.

EDIT: If they sold/gave the IP to Bioware on the other hand...

Changing Zelda from an action-adventure to an RPG is like changing X-COM: UFO Defense from a turn-based strategy to a first-person shooter. It's not like Mario, which has a whole surreal reality to exploit; the brand by itself isn't as viable as the gameplay. Zelda isn't really much more than a relatively down-to-earth fantasy world, but it's made interesting by the way the player explores it, IE its signature problem solving and exploration-driven gameplay and attention to detail.

That interaction model, founded very strongly in the player's direct interaction with the setting, is the heart and soul of the series; not that you couldn't explore the Zelda world in other ways, but the problem is finding a way that serves it equally as well as its traditional formula does, and I don't think an RPG of any kind would be the right fit. If Nintendo does something new with Zelda, I think it should be more in terms of what characters and settings they choose to explore rather than genre of game. Nobody really wants Zelda to be of a different genre, but exploring it from the perspective of a new character or putting it in a new setting other than Hyrule could be very refreshing. Making changes to Ganon's approach to conquering the land might be interesting too, like say if a huge cult started in his name and everybody but Link was part of it, forcing him to be covert and infiltrate their ranks in order to prove Ganon's non-benevolence and destroy the black gate before he has a chance to come back through it.

Oh. Or I could just play that.

Oracle of Seasons/Ages wasn't Nintendo though...fully. They were both made by Capcom.

Also, LoZ has already been a RPG, kind of...more of a Castlevania/RPG hybrid with Zelda 2.

They did that already: Zelda 2.

...Oh, in MODERN Zelda titles? Well, unless you want GRIND in a Zelda title (the most common result of adding RPG elements, though not the only result), there is really little reason to do this beyond what the series does currently.

Tell me how adding RPG elements would add to the depth of a Zelda title.

Well aware of that. Stared at the Capcom logo enough on those games as a kid.

I was just saying that if Zelda ever went full-blown RPG, Game Freak would be the best choice.

I'd like to see a TLOZ in the style of God of War or Devil May Cry. One that focuses on combat rather than puzzle-solving and fetch quests.

I'd love to play a game where you switch between each of the three triforce users to defeat a bigger threat. Link and his Sword, Zelda and her bow, Ganondolf and his magic.

I realized recently that I like the Zelda character more and more as they add on to her, and it would be fun to play a ZELDA game where you play as ZELDA.

Zelda IS an RPG, it's just an action RPG instead of a turn-based RPG.

If it isn't broken don't fix it. Like a car driving towards a cliff edge, the engine works so there's nothing wrong, right?

I don't get why people are making a big fuss over this. It isn't like anyone is saying that they should stop making the main title but just come out with one. No one is saying they should split Skyward Sword's development into making this right now. It is simply saying "Hey, wouldn't this be cool?"

I think it would be a good idea and actually think it more makes sense than not. Zelda is on the cusp of an RPG as it is. I think it should maintain the same real time combat it does now. But you should be able to have an assortment of gear you can buy, you would have a skill tree to level from and be able to improve your sword or boomerang skills, and you could bring in other elements. I think it would adapt well.

Not to be offensive, but I read this post as if you were actually getting angry at the idea.

would you level link up? maybe just at certain plot points? does his weapons level up? can he buy upgrades or does he earn them?

i'd be very interested to see..

also...a motherfucking jump button
