Anyone ever played Legend of Legaia?

In the late 90s was when I really got into JRPGs. I personally think the PS1 has the most impressive library of JRPGs in terms of quantity and quality over any system. I have loads of them, but for some reason or another Legend of Legaia went under the radar. I recently bought it as well as the PS2 sequel (which I heard wasn't that great but it was 8 bucks).

So, for those who have played it. What do you think of the game compared to the other PS1 JRPG offerings?

Meh, story and char were kinda boring and the combat system felt like it was trying to be xenogear, picking random kick punch atks to string a combo. I remember there being something about some magic item being stuck on the chars, but compared to the other rpg that came out at its time it quickly got thrown to the side for something better.

I haven't played it in forever so based off nostalgia and my childhood memories it was fun. Though I also had the strategy guide for all the combos so I didn't have to randomly guess. I had no problem with the story or the characters, it's not especially deep but it gives you a good reason to go adventuring and has several varied environments (which looked good at the time). There's evil mist that has monsters in it and you have to revive the guardian trees and destroy the mist factories. Though the biggest flaw was the encounter rate, it's insane if I remember correctly. That was the only JRPG of the game where I'd actually run from battles since there were so many.

It had an okay premise, an interesting combat system, and a pretty damn cool magic system. Seru summoning was the real wild card in the game, as once you could get mystic artes you just kept using them because there was no reason not to iirc. Music was pretty good too.

That said I never beat the game, moved on to other things after I got stuck at the casino tower place. It also didn't help that Square was actually producing GOOD games back in the day, so there was competition for the JRPG genre.

FF7, FF9, probably both superior games. My teenage self thought FF8 was better at the time too, but we all think dumb things when we're teenagers.

I would also put Breath of Fire 3 as being superior to it.

The only JRPG I can think of on a similar level of interesting combat and decent story but never pulling it off entirely would be Legend of Dragoon.

I had similar thoughts at the time. FF7, FF9, Xenogears, Final Fantasy Tactics, and a slew of other great JRPGs were coming out around that time. The reviews at the time gave LoL sort of a mediocre rating. This actually is the same reason I passed up The Legend of Dragoon during that time. However, a few years back I bought it and absolutely loved it. I was wondering if I would have a similar experience with LoL.

This taught me to take reviews with a grain of salt. So many games that got a bad or mediocre reception I enjoyed anyway.

Thats one of the reasons legia felt meh, there was so many other great jrpgs out at the time youd always end thinking " why am I playing this? I could be playing chrono cross instead" then switch up.

I really liked this game back in the day, but it's true that it had its flaws. It always felt like a bit of a drag to go anywhere, I remember. I was always thinking "is this dungeon ever going to END", and so on. I liked the game though. Its battle system was pretty cool, and the combo system(or whatever it was) was a fun variation on standard attacks(even if it wasn't really any less tactically shallow).

The magic leveling was nearly pointless and too grindy, though. Aside from the healing magic, you never really used any given spell enough to level them to the point where they could out DPS your basic ass-kickery. Not too mention that getting seru was pretty hit-or-miss sometimes.

I think it'd be interesting to see a new variation on the series with more modern techniques. I love JRPGs, but I actually think this is one game that might have actually been better if it'd strayed further from its roots.

I remember it being fun back then. I'm not sure if I would play it now. Some of the characters in the game were interesting. Main character was a piece of wood all the time. The monk was interesting as well. Noa was bat shit insane, but she did not annoy me like Selphie did.

There are some moments that still resonate with me in the over decade since I played it. Baka Fighter was cool. That old man who thought Noa was his grand child was haunting. The trip through time was interesting, although I would have wanted to kill something while I was there.

As for me, Valkyrie Profile is still the Best game on the system, with FF9 a close second. Xenogears is up there, but I hate being railroaded with a purple passion. With other JRPgs, I can atleast control the narrative and advance the story when I choose to.

I think it was pretty awesome with a very original story for the time. It was the first JRPG that started with a real post apocolyptic setting (although FF6 had the same feel halfway through the game).

The other thing I really liked was that it was a very martial arts focused system with special moves. Rather then just run up and attack you were pulling off combos with weapons, punches, and kicks.

The magic system was at best lackluster but its still not the worst magic system Ive played

Legaia 2 was better in a gameplay sense and it had a good story but I dont think it was as good as the first one. Its story was less unique and I wonder what was going on with the world. Although the voice acting was pretty awful. Was this just another part of it? and if so what happened with the whole Seru thing? or did it take the final fantasy route with same name but totally different world/feel?

Anyway I liked both games and they're both worth a look if you like JRPGs at all

100% Honest Legend Of Lagia is most likely my TOP RPG for PS1.

I have beated that game, and i got to say finding out combos/story were awesome.... I really enjoyed it alot, same with Legend of Dragoon Which i own.. (Been trying to get Legend of Lagia on ebay) but price keeps going to 40-50$ :(

Legaia 2 i didnt like the ending... i feel like the last 10-20% of game sort of feels rushed, and you feel like o.o i am already at Final Boss? Like the ending just comes out of you no were... so the story of it wasnt as good as LEgend of Lagia. They do have similar combat system to PS1 so that fun too.

But i enjoy alot more games that dont have too many Characters (part reason i liked Legend of Lagia 1 you have like 3 characters only which allowed the story focus on the three characters alot, when you have 6+ characters their not enough character development usually), cause i want to play them all =p reason i loved FFX system/FFXII system you can play all characters/switch them out in middle of battle and have reason to level them all and enjoy the game even more.
