That most people can afford it isn't really the issue here. It seems like double charging to me. Maybe I would feel differently if I played it but from the outside looking in, it seems ridiculous.
Were it a small update I would agree with you and most of it will be implimented via patch, personaly I thought Wrath of the Lich King was overpriced for essentialy a very low amount of content (1 year later we saw approcimatley 1 new raid instance which was about 4 bosses long and takes about two hours to clear tops even if the difficulty is statisfying)

Cata I wont mind paying for full, maybe even collectors edition I feel like I'm paying the devs for the amount of effort going in this time it is a colossal amount of content.

I am, Cata looks awesome and i want to play, some of the new features make it out the the player has more of a control on the world around them.

I'm definetly looking forward to it. I've pre-ordered the Collector's Edition and all. This looks like all the information that Blizzard have gathered so far, and put into one package.

I'm interested in cataclysm, but I'd not say excited. Glad to see the old world getting an overhaul, because to be totally honest, I mainly make alts rather than level to 80, so fresh content sounds good to me :)

I'm so tempted to buy a copy it's not funny... I just don't want to fall into that downward spiral again and waste 8 hours a day on it...

Blizzard thinks I sold my account on E-Bay, so I'm not going to re-buy all of the expansions and level up to 80 again just for Cataclysm.

I'm really pumped for this. For the past few months I've been on semi-retirement from WoW doing little more than a couple of raids a week, and even those are starting to feel tired.

When the next patch hits in a couple of weeks, there are so many changes to character classes and stats that it'll feel like a new game. Everyone will have to re-learn their class, some more than others.

The of course in Cataclysm itself there's a whole new Azeroth to explore. I'm really looking forward not just to the new high level areas, quests and raids but also levelling up another alt or two through the completely re-vamped 1-60 content.

Naa, it's the third expansion for me, isn't much of a deal anymore. Just like a huge patch that makes you level once more.

WOW is $180 per year plus expansions which run $30-$40 per year if an expansion is released that year.

So, $210-$220 a year for one game. Can you name any other game you would pay that much for per year?

Oh well, to each his own I was just saying that at $180 per person per year, there isn't any reason why expansions shouldn't be free (or $5 for a disc).
That really isn't a lot tbh. Here in the UK it would be roughly £160 max for a year with expansions included. Thats like getting 4 new Xbox games a year, and thats if you're lucky and they are £40 most are £45+. So compared to that it isn't a bad deal.

I used to play WoW for like five months and probably got more hours played and more fun out of it than I would if I got from any Xbox/PS3 games.

EDIT: On topic, the latest expansion looks good and I'm tempted to active my account again but will probably wait for SW:TOR before looking at another MMO.

I am getting excited. Me and a friend are planning to start two Goblin characters at the same time with him as Warrior and me as Shaman.

Very very excited. I'm going for realm first level 85 on my server, so it's going to be fun times for me.

I personally spend a lot more on games now than what I used to spend when I played WoW. WoW was the only game I played at the time, I wouldn't spend money on other stuff. But now... I finish games really really quickly and buy a new game maybe once every 2 weeks... That is a lot of money. could probably get a good car with that.

Problem with World of Warcraft however, it can take up your whole life because of social implications within the game. If you join a raiding guild, it can be like a second job... That's why if I start playing again, I probably won't join any guilds and just stick to casual dungeoning and maybe some pvp.

I just don't understand why more people don't complain about having to buy the game/expansions for full price whilst also paying a monthly subscription.
Patches are very large in WoW and their free if you didnt know, they add new dungeons and items.
They are not really that free... that's kind of what the subscription is for..

Not as much as I used to be. I just stopped playing WoW again, and I'm not just done with the current content (I'm not one who can keep grinding the same stuff over and over again) but the mechanics itself are kinda getting to me as well.

And while I'm still very curious about the changes in Azeroth and wonder how the new world looks, I'm pretty sure it won't hook me again. Maybe I'll get a month or so of playtime out of it, if I'm not too busy with other games.

I thought that until I saw the new Heroic VC... they aint fucking it up like they did with naxx. It's that same layout but the boss fights are changed to better suit gameplay now.

Also VC is close to my heart... I don't think I have ever been so excited in my life when I first entered it... my first green item dropped and it blew my mind.

Servers, next expansion development, employees besides development team, taxes and many more things.

There are lots of expenses, it would take ages to list them all.
Yeah but you can arguably say that with any multiplayer game with a one off payment when you buy it at the store.. The subscription is for the continual patches which are released that increase playability which is unique compared to other games.
