It's ridiculous. They gave it to Youtubers and streamers a week early so now my email and youtube sub box are clogged to hell with Cities skyline videos.

That said, seems like it's what everyone wanted Sim City to be. Pretty funny in a sad sort of way, since today I heard EA killed Maxis.

I just built a gaming rig, so I might check it out. Not really a city sim builder guy, but I did play Sim City 2000 when I was a young buck.

I don't really have any concerns, the videos have given me lots of the information I was curious about. But they might have chosen a better name, I think. Makes it sounds like it's connected to the Cities:XL series, which I don't think it is.

The tiles system seems interesting. It's the style I've seen most recently in Prison Architect.

Slap a big "We'll See" on there for now, I guess. If I don't pick it up within the coming weeks, then it'll be a buy on sale.

Almost inevitable I'll pick it up sooner or later. All the previews have been positive and there's enough live footage available for everyone to see that this isn't another case of smoke and mirrors ala the latest Sim City game. Seems to be the real deal and aside from the Tropico series, I haven't had a proper new city-builder game to enjoy in ages.

Care to elaborate? Are you speaking of their fanatical adherence to the lane they plan to exit from?
Pretty much what leberkaese already said. I watched the stream of quill18 I think and when he was fiddling around with one-way roads some cars took pretty weird detours. He built an one-way road that ended in an alley and cars would drive up the alley then make a U-turn for no apparent reason. There are also quite a few graphical weirdnesses regarding traffic. Cars driving through each other on 4-way crossroads and things like that. Also trains despawn once they reach their target depot? That seems to be intended though. There were also some "cars can't leave" or so error messages but they resolved themselves over time.

On the other hand pretty much everyone who played it seems to be enjoying the game. I'm cautiously optimistic for the game :)

Agreed. There seems to be a lot of "I've lost sleep because of this game" amongst the streamers, particularly Quill. Even Notch tweeted that it was much better than he was expecting.

That said, SimCity showed REALLY well in initial spurts, too. It was only later it was all revealed to be smoke and lies.

Anyway, after you get your hot little hands on it, Guppy, please come back here to report your thoughts. I've come to trust your judgment after lurking these boards for a couple years.
I've been playing all day. It's pretty damn good. Runs absolutely rock solid, no lag, no crashes, no bugs so far. I've purchased four of the nine tiles available to me (mods are already available that unlock the full 25) and I haven't even halfway filled the space I've got. I'm already 2-3 times the size of my largest SimCity city.

It's got a little bit of challenge to it, as well. At least some city planning is required, most particularly when it comes to traffic. I've learned to my dismay many times now that intersections = bad.

Doing very well, review wise:

I watched a video where someone made a giant dickbutt land and built their own dick shaped town. Also, Poop water is bad, so don't mix your inflow with your outflow! Needless to say, I was captivated.

I'll keep my eye on this. I'm not a massive fan of city simulators, but if it's open to wackiness I might pick it up in a sale sometime in the near future.

It's a little odd seeing a game like this being released so soon after Maxis disappeared into EAs "basement".

That explains why Sips_ named his first town Donutsville, at least.

I've been interested in it. I've never really played a city-builder, especially not with the intention of creating a functioning city (I don't think tearing down scenarios and poorly-planned collections of buildings with disasters in SimCity 2000 really count, after all), but it looks like a lot of fun.

I had absolutely no idea it even existed until I stumbled across the Kotaku review on my Twitter feed this morning (and I don't even follow Kotaku so I've no idea how it popped up), but I'm really interested in it. I haven't played a city builder since Sim City on the SNES so forgive me for being a bit overawed by the amount of building options and customisation on offer here - I mean, you can name EVERYTHING! My 8 year old self would have killed to be able to name each and every pixelated school, stadium and skyscraper.

Thanks for the update, Guppy. It, indeed, looks like the cat's pajamas. Now I just need to find time to play.

Just started playing this, here are some thoughts.

I haven't used one-way roads because I live in a city with them and consequentially do not believe in them. I will say that until you get the high-density zones it doesn't much matter- I created a 4-lane parkway through my city to ease suburban congestion, and people were just kind of "that's nice your lordship" and kept driving through neighborhoods, albeit in an orderly fashion. Being able to build any roads you want is sort of liberating, and your city will look believably organic, but if you're hardcore OCD you may go mad packing as many zoneable tiles into the map as possible.

Power for me has been the biggest challenge, since you need so much of it. I've tried to go green, and there are plenty of options, but as in the real world, tasty tasty fossil fuels just provide so much power. On the other hand, just one coal plant will turn about two blocks in every direction into charred wasteland. Building advanced wind turbines now occupies roughly half of my budget, meaning that my town must make do with only one police station and only just got adequate fire coverage.

The game looks good and runs full tilt on my modest box with no lag of any kind.
