I won a few tournaments as a kid, but I doubt I'd be able to beat anyone with any kind of skill nowadays :/

I played Chess with my Uni housemate whilst we were backpacking. Neither of us had played very much in the past but when you're sitting on a beach, playing with a set that has bottle caps as replacements for pawns, it's pretty darn special.

We meet up intermittently to play and catch up.

I enjoy it but nobody I know really does so I have never 'got into it' properly. I know the rules, but don't know of any of the strategies/tactics that pro's would use.

I had a pawn take my piece when it wasn't diagonal in Windows Chess.

Won a few tournaments when I was in elementary school and middle school. High school I played it casually but eh i'm not really good per say it's just that little kids usually suck at the game and I just had a firm grasp of how pieces were supposed to move and simple strats at that age. As I got older other people caught up and so did my mediocrity :(

So nah, i'm an awful strategist and usually only play against people I know i'll win against to make myself feel better..

In my final year of secondary school I got to the finals of the school chess tournament, but then lost to a first year.

I've always played a fair bit of chess throughout my school life, and I've always been pretty good, but not amazing.

My dad is really good at chess, and he taught me to play. I've yet to beat him, but I dream of that glorious day.

I have a chess program on my laptop that I play most days as well.

Played it years ago. I do not know any of these strategies you mention and have no interest in learning them. It can be fun to get the board games out when a group of friends are over, but I never play any of them seriously.

That's a valid rule. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/En_passant

I haven't played in about 6 years or something. I used to be alright I think, or I was better than my friends anyway. I probably would have sucked if I played it properly.

Except that the pawn did it on my side of the board.

I miss chess, nobody to play with anymore :(
I know right? Not many people ( outside tournaments and stuff) play chess anymore . I was actually talkigto a friend yesterday , and i asked her if she wanted to play chess during our lunch breaks at work . I was surprised when she said yes .

I remember as a kid going to the library and people were outside on the chess tables . It was always full . I go nowadays and there is no one . Been so for years . As a child my dad taught me how to play , saying that chess is the most important game to learn to play as it helps you developpe logical thinking .

I used to play alot in secondary school, won a few tournaments but since I've been to Uni hardly anyone plays, my girlfriend doesn't have the attention span for a proper game of chess she gets bored halfway through and basically gives up. I actually cant remember who taught me how to play, although I do remember one of my first games thinking the Rook could take multiple pieces on its line for some reason.

I've played against friends but I'm ridiculously bad at it. I can win against people on my level but my boyfriend loves it and works out strategies so I always lose, sometimes in an embarrassing amount of moves.

I actually taught my nephew to play chess when he was five years old, have you ever tried teaching this game to someone who dosen't know the rules? It's difficult.

But my nephew is nearly nine now and he still asks me to play with him sometimes and even plays by himself against the computer which makes me proud to see.

It feels good though to actually pass something on to the younger generation.

I've played since I was 8. Haven't played in a while though. I used to be in a chess club in college. Didn't do well in tournaments though. I like the game, but I'm not really one to sit there and read up on the best strategies. I feel like that takes all the fun out of it.

Kind of the same way I feel about MTG. If I can't build the deck on my own, I don't want to play it.

I played but not competitively. These days however I only played (on the pc) when I am competely bored out of my mind and even then I'm not great on it since at best I can get a stalemate with the AI on easy mode!
